Dubious consent

A reader's tag, shortened to dubcon, for stories written so that consent is unclear, pressured or impossible to give freely. Not a legal term and not a rating.

Updated

Dubious consent, almost always shortened to dubcon, is a tag readers and writers use for fiction in which consent is unclear, pressured or impossible to give freely. It describes how a scene is written, not what a service permits and not what any law says.

Dubcon and noncon

Noncon, short for non-consent, is the neighbouring tag and it makes no claim to ambiguity: the fiction depicts sex without consent. Dubcon sits in the space before that, where the story leaves the question open, whether through intoxication, coercion, a power imbalance or a bargain the character cannot really refuse. Writers use the pair to warn each other; the distinction is not fine print, it is the point of the tag.

Why the tags exist at all

Because the alternative is a reader meeting the scene without warning. The tags grew up on community archives, where writers label their own work, and they travelled from there into commercial apps that borrow the vocabulary without always borrowing the labelling discipline. A written content warning says what is in a story. A genre chip only says what mood to expect, which is why the two are not interchangeable.

Where the services stand

Among the services we cover, some state a rule on the theme and some do not, and the two groups do not split along the lines you would guess. Several AI story services ban non-consensual acts in their published rules while carrying a dark romance category, and some of the free adult archives permit the theme in fiction while banning it in anything presented as real. The rules sit on each service's own page in our apps and platforms sections, in the service's own words.

One thing dubcon never means

It is a tag about adult characters. Every service we cover that publishes a rule on the age of characters requires them to be adults, and this site's own rule is the same: everyone depicted or discussed here is an adult. A tag about the ambiguity of consent between adults is a different subject from the age rules, which our taboo fiction page sets out service by service.
