Quick answer
- Who publishes it: 21 services. Thirteen show Romance on a category page, genre row or tag list of their own, six on store-listing or explainer text, and two (Literotica and Archive of Our Own) on category counts we read but do not link.
- Heat: the label does not say how explicit the stories are. Wattpad allows explicit scenes only in stories rated Mature, and the terms of Dreame and GoodNovel ban sexually explicit content.
- Free: 12 of the 21 let you read or listen to something without paying. Audible, Kindle+, Dreame and GoodNovel do not, and five more do not state what is free.
- Largest counts: Audible's Romance category showed 57,947 titles on October 27, 2026 (every heat level). Literotica's category index listed 28.2k stories, and Archive of Our Own's Romance tag 978,652 works across all ratings.
- Other formats: audio exists on 11 of the 21, interactive stories on 4 and AI-written stories on 2.
What erotic romance is, and where it blurs into erotica
Romance, in this niche, is fiction where a love or sexual relationship drives the plot, from closed-door sweet romance to fully explicit erotic romance. Erotic romance keeps the love story central. Erotica puts the sex first. Services draw the line between the two in different places, so a Romance shelf is not an erotica shelf, and this page is about the shelf, not the heat.
The words readers use for heat are vague on purpose. Our glossary entry on what spicy means in books explains why a store-safe word and a pepper scale stand in for a definition. The practical test is to read the service's own rules, which is what the table below does.
Romance is also the parent of most other genres on this site. Its edges run into dark romance, billionaire romance, historical, paranormal and LGBTQ stories, each of which has its own page and its own set of services.
Which services publish a Romance category
A service is on this list only because it publishes a category, shelf, genre listing or store description that names romance. None is there on a guess from its general description. The second column says what we saw and, where the service shows one, its own figure with the date we read it. The third gives the explicit-text rule from its own terms or policy, which is the column that tells you what Romance will contain.

Retail stores: a Romance shelf that says nothing about heat
The four stores with a real Romance category page are Audible, Smashwords, Apple Books and Google Play Books. Audible is a general audiobook retailer, and its page header counted 57,947 titles in Romance on October 27, 2026. We saw that number from an EU address, and Audible's counts move between loads: its Erotica category read 55,012 on one load and 54,633 on another. The Romance figure covers every romance audiobook, not erotic ones. Audible's romance shelf also has Historical, Paranormal, Fantasy, Science Fiction and LGBTQ+ sub-categories, which is why those genre pages quote it too.
Smashwords is an ebook store that hides erotica by default. Its Erotica Content Guidelines, dated March 10, 2026, say a customer must be a registered user and ask to see it, and that pornography has never been allowed. Its About page claims over a million ebooks and nearly 100,000 priced at free; both are the store's own claims.
Apple Books and Google Play Books sell per title with no subscription. Apple's guidelines ban "prohibited explicit or objectionable content" and do not define it. Google's Partner Center policy allows sexually explicit content only with educational, artistic, historical or documentary value and a "For mature audiences" flag. A Romance shelf in either store is therefore the mainstream shelf. Kindle+ is the thinnest entry: Amazon's explainer lists romance among genres you can search, but the Kindle+ pages themselves have no genre category, so we count it on text alone.
Web novel and serial apps: the terms decide
Dreame describes itself as a romance web novel app. Its App Store text claims 500,000+ novels and 100+ million readers, which are vendor claims. Its terms say your use and "Your Content" must not include material that is "sexually explicit or pornographic", yet its iPhone listing is rated 18+ with a frequent advisory for sexual content or nudity. We record that contradiction and do not resolve it. GoodNovel is clearer: its terms bar "sexually explicit description, cover and graphic, etc. (including any pornography)". Webnovel sits between them, banning "indecent" and "pornographic" content without naming explicit text.
Wattpad is the large social site in this group. Its Content Guidelines, last revised August 10, 2026, allow "Explicit sexual scenes between consenting adults" only in Mature stories and ban pornography. According to our research record, Mature content is switched on in the app's settings.
The romance specialists are newer and publish less. Roma claims 10,000+ books and offers free preview chapters before coins; we found no content policy on its pages. Spicify sells original dark romance as books, audiobooks and Webtoons, and says it is for adults only; none of its pages say whether explicit text is allowed. Epictos is an iPhone reader that claims 500+ novels, with an 18+ rating whose advisories do not list sexual content. Satinaire is an Android app of AI-written serials, and its terms restrict spice level 4 and above to people aged 18 or over.
Adult-first audio and interactive stories
Three audio services file stories under Romance. Quinn and OhCleo are marketplaces where independent voice performers upload their own recordings, so a Romance category there is whatever creators chose to file. BLANCHEstories is a Swedish app of short stories whose three category names are Romance, Erotica and "Lust and health"; it claims 600+ original stories. Our audio erotica section compares the paid services in full.
Interactive romance is rarer. Chyoa is a free, ad-supported site of branching adult fiction written by its members. Scripts is a choice-based app that lists romance among its genres, and DreamPress AI generates chaptered stories with choose-your-path options. Literotica also has story games under its own content rules. For the choice apps in detail, see interactive romance apps. AI-written romance exists on two of the 21, DreamPress AI and Satinaire, and both say the stories are machine-generated.
What is free and what is not
Twelve of the 21 offer some reading or listening without paying. Smashwords, Apple Books and Google Play Books are free to browse, with free titles and samples. Wattpad is free with ads, and its Premium plan starts at $4.99 a month on the web, though the App Store charges $5.99. OhCleo gives a free account with three stories in full, and BLANCHEstories has a free version with ads that carries about 100 of its stories. Chyoa lets you read most stories signed out. DreamPress AI grants 15 credits a day once your email is verified. Roma and Satinaire let you start free, with coins or ads after that, and Literotica and Archive of Our Own are free throughout, the latter without ads.
Four have no free tier. Audible's Standard plan is $8.99 a month after a 30-day trial, and Kindle+ is $11.99 a month plus taxes after its own 30-day trial. Dreame and GoodNovel give first chapters and then sell coins. We cannot turn those coins into a price per chapter, because neither publishes how many coins a chapter costs. The pack prices are there (300 coins for $2.99 at Dreame, 200 for $1.99 at GoodNovel), but without the chapter cost the arithmetic stops. Five services, Webnovel, Quinn, Scripts, Spicify and Epictos, do not state what is free on the pages we read. "Free" in all of this means some reading, not a free library.
The sentence about character age
Of the 21, three publish a sentence saying that the characters are adults: Literotica, whose footer reads Characters in all stories are over 18.
, Chyoa, whose footer says all characters in all stories on the site are over 18, and DreamPress AI, whose content policy says All characters must be over the age of 18.
For the rest we looked and did not find one. That describes the pages we read, not the catalogues, and several of the others, Smashwords and OhCleo among them, publish a rule against sexual content involving people under 18. The wider picture is in our page on taboo fiction and age rules.
Related genres
The other genres have a page each under erotica genres. If the romance you want has menace in it, see dark romance, which has no retail category and works from tags. For wealthy leads, see billionaire romance; for period settings, historical erotic romance; for creatures and magic, paranormal; and for queer pairings, LGBTQ erotica. If you want the services compared on features rather than genre, the best romance reading apps page compares them on price, features and rules.
FAQ
Is erotic romance the same as erotica?
Not quite. Erotic romance keeps the love story central, while erotica puts the sex first, and services draw the line differently. A Romance category does not tell you how explicit the stories are.
Where can I read erotic romance free?
Literotica and Archive of Our Own are free throughout, and Chyoa is free to read signed out. Smashwords, Apple Books and Google Play Books have free titles, but Smashwords hides erotica until you switch it on. Free here means some reading, not a whole library.
Do romance apps allow explicit content?
It depends on the service. Dreame and GoodNovel ban sexually explicit content in their terms, Wattpad allows explicit scenes only in Mature stories, and Literotica, Chyoa and OhCleo state that explicit adult fiction is allowed. Spicify, Epictos and Roma do not say either way on the pages we read.
Does Audible have erotic romance?
Audible has a Romance category of 57,947 titles and a separate Erotica category of 55,012, both counted on October 27, 2026 from a general retail catalogue. We have not audited either, and its Conditions of Use contain no sentence on explicit content.
Can I listen to erotic romance instead of reading it?
Yes. Audio exists on 11 of the 21 services, including Audible, Quinn, OhCleo, BLANCHEstories and Spicify, and Literotica has an audio category that plays in a browser.
Are there interactive erotic romance stories?
Yes, on four of the services: Chyoa, DreamPress AI, Scripts and Literotica's story games. Each works differently, and DreamPress AI generates its stories with AI.
