Quick answer
- Who publishes it: 11 services. Ten on a category page, genre row or tag list of their own, and Archive of Our Own on a tag count. Literotica has no historical category.
- The biggest shelf: Audible's Historical category under Romance, 32,368 titles on October 27, 2026, more than half of its 57,947 Romance titles. Regency (10,860) and Victorian (6,202) are its sub-categories. These are general retail counts, not erotic ones.
- Gaps: Apple Books and Google Play Books show only History, which is non-fiction, and no historical fiction or romance category.
- Free: six services have some free reading. Audible, Dipsea and GoodNovel do not, and Quinn and Webnovel do not state it.
- Formats: audio on 5 services, interactive on 1, AI-written on 2.
What historical erotic romance is, and where it blurs
Historical erotic romance sets love and sex stories in a past period: Regency and Victorian England, medieval and Tudor courts, the American West, the ancient world. Retail stores usually file it as a sub-category of romance, while story platforms may offer only a general historical-fiction label. The boundary is fuzzy in two places. Time-travel and historical fantasy cross into other genres, and a "period" tag on an audio app can mean costume rather than era.
It is also the genre where the retail picture is clearest and the adult-first picture is thinnest. The stores have named sub-categories by period. The audio and reading services mostly offer a tag, and some give no count at all.
Retail: the Audible numbers, and the stores with none
Audible lists a Historical category under Romance, and its page header counted 32,368 titles on October 27, 2026, as seen from an EU address. Audible's counts move between loads, and this one covers all historical romance audiobooks, not erotic ones. Its Regency sub-category held 10,860 and Victorian 6,202. If the two do not overlap, which the page does not say, together they come to 17,062, a little over half of the Historical total.
Historical is also the largest of the four Romance sub-categories we recorded from Audible. Paranormal held 9,512, Fantasy 6,871 and Science Fiction 1,799 on the same date. Audible's Literature & Fiction section has a separate Historical Fiction category, which is the non-romance shelf.
Smashwords has a historical category as well, and it hides erotica until a registered user switches Filtering on. Apple Books and Google Play Books are the surprise. On the pages we read they show only History, which is a non-fiction category, and no historical fiction or historical romance category. A reader browsing either store for Regency romance will not find a named shelf. The store rules behind that are in our guide to why erotica apps disappear from the App Store.
Audio: tags, not shelves
Dipsea tags its audio stories historical and Regency on its home page. It has no free plan, charges $12.99 a month or $69.99 a year, gives a 7-day trial on the annual plan, and claims 1000+ audio stories and audiobooks. Its site did not load when we rechecked on October 27, 2026, so the tags come from our research record of its home page.
Quinn has historical and period categories, with numbers beside them that the service does not label: 247 and 38. The "period" label is the ambiguous one, because it can mean costume or setting rather than a historical era. Quinn is a marketplace where independent performers upload their own recordings, so the shelves are whatever creators filed. It charges $7.99 a month or $59.99 a year and states no free tier. The audio erotica section compares the paid services.
Reading apps and AI generators
Wattpad's genre row includes Historical Fiction. Its guidelines allow explicit scenes only in stories rated Mature, and it bans pornography. GoodNovel, Webnovel and DreamPress AI are also recorded for the genre, though our records name the shelf without a count or a title list. GoodNovel's terms bar sexually explicit description, and Webnovel's ban "indecent" and "pornographic" content without naming explicit text, so a historical romance on either is written to those limits.
Satinaire lists "historical Regency" in the genre list on its website. It is an Android app of AI-written romance and fantasy serials with AI-narrated audio, and its terms restrict spice level 4 and above to people aged 18 or over. Roma is recorded on its own pages too, with free preview chapters and coins after that. DreamPress AI is an AI generator that gives 15 free credits a day, and it lists the genre as an option for stories it writes.
The free libraries
Literotica has no category named historical. We say so because a reader who expects one will not find it, and we do not link to its categories. Archive of Our Own's Historical tag listed 133,170 works on October 27, 2026. It is a free-form tag, the count covers every rating, and it is a fact about where a large free library sits and not a recommendation. Its Content Policy allows works at every rating, and the archive is free and carries no ads.
Free and paid
Six services have some free reading: Smashwords (free ebooks and open browsing), Wattpad (free with ads), DreamPress AI (daily credits), Roma (free preview chapters), Satinaire (free to start, with ads) and Archive of Our Own. Audible is $8.99 a month after a 30-day trial, Dipsea has no free plan and GoodNovel is sample-then-pay with coins. Quinn and Webnovel do not state what is free on the pages we read. Webnovel's coin packs run from 50 coins for $0.99 to 5,000 for $99.99, but it does not publish what a chapter costs.
Audio, interactive and AI versions
Audio exists on five of the 11: Audible, Dipsea, Quinn, DreamPress AI and Satinaire. The only interactive option is DreamPress AI, which offers choose-your-path choices, and the AI-written ones are DreamPress AI and Satinaire. Anyone who wants branching historical stories will find few choices in our research. The interactive erotica section covers the services that exist.
Related genres
Historical romance belongs to the wider erotic romance shelf and shades into adult fantasy where magic enters the period. The full list is on the genres hub.
FAQ
Is there a historical category on Literotica?
No. Its category index, read on October 27, 2026, has no category named historical.
Where can I listen to Regency erotica?
Audible has a Regency sub-category under Historical romance with 10,860 titles, though it is a general retail count. Dipsea tags historical and Regency stories, and Quinn has historical and period categories.
Why do Apple Books and Google Play Books show no historical romance?
On the pages we read they show only History, a non-fiction category, and no historical fiction or romance category. Both stores have general Romance categories, so a historical romance may be filed there, but we did not check titles.
What does "period" mean on an audio app?
It can mean costume or setting rather than a historical era. Quinn has a period category with 38 beside it, a number the service does not label, next to a historical category with 247.
Can I read historical romance for free?
Partly. Archive of Our Own is free throughout, and Wattpad, DreamPress AI, Roma and Satinaire have free reading with limits. Smashwords has free titles but hides erotica until switched on.
Are there interactive historical stories?
Only one source in our research: DreamPress AI, which offers choose-your-path choices in the stories it generates.
