Wattpad Review

What Is Wattpad?

Wattpad is a social reading and writing platform for web fiction and fan fiction. The App Store text calls it "the world's most-loved social storytelling platform" that "connects a global community of millions of readers and writers", and claims 70 million monthly readers, which is a claim about readers and not a story count. The seller shown is Wattpad Corp. Adult material is a labelled sub-part of the platform, not its product.

The Content Guidelines were last revised on August 10, 2026 and the iPhone app was updated on October 22, 2026. The Terms of Service, which also carry the Code of Conduct and Privacy Policy, were last revised on May 13, 2019.

What Wattpad's rules allow

The guidelines open with a general stance: "We allow a wide range of creative expression, including mature and challenging topics." They then list what is removed, starting with content "Created primarily for sexual arousal". Creators must rate every story, and the rating decides what it may contain.

• Everyone: "Suitable for all audiences. No explicit or highly sensitive content." Allowed sexual content is "Romantic or sexual relationships as part of a broader story" and "Non-explicit or implied sexual content".
• Mature (17+): may contain "Explicit sexual content". The allowed sexual content is "Explicit sexual scenes between consenting adults (18+ or as otherwise applicable under local, national or international laws)" and "Sexual content that supports the story, not the main purpose".

The banned list for sexual content reads: "Pornographic content (created primarily for sexual arousal)"; "Any sexual content involving minors", with "zero tolerance for Child Sexual Exploitation Material (CSEM)"; "Sexual exploitation, coercion, or non-consensual acts that are glorified"; "Sexual roleplay, solicitation, or messaging"; and illegal sex acts including bestiality, necrophilia and incest. The guidelines warn that "A mature rating is not an exception to our Content Guidelines. Even if a story is marked Mature, prohibited content is not allowed and will be removed."

So the line Wattpad draws is not explicit against non-explicit. It is explicit scenes that serve a story, in Mature stories, against content whose main purpose is arousal. Where a particular story falls is the site's judgement, and the guidelines say it may adjust story ratings and remove content. Images are held to a stricter standard: "Explicit sexual imagery or nudity in a sexual context" is banned, and the guidelines say media is subject to stricter standards "to comply with global mobile app store distribution requirements". Fiction about real people is removed if it involves non-consensual sexual content or non-consensual AI deepfakes.

Our page on platforms that ban erotica compares this with the services that draw the line elsewhere.

Wattpad review: who it suits

Going by the policy and the store listings, Wattpad suits a reader who wants a large, free, social site for web fiction and who is looking for stories with romance or sexual content as part of a wider plot. It is a weaker fit if you want a site where explicit sex is the main point, since that is what the guidelines exclude. It is also a weaker fit if you want a store with a stated minimum age above 13, since the Terms set 13.

Age: five answers to one question

Wattpad's own documents and its store listings give different ages, and we publish each.

• Terms of Service: "Wattpad Services are only for people 13 years old and over." Terms of Service.
• App Store: the listing shows 16+, with the advisories "Frequent: Mature or Suggestive Themes" and "Infrequent: Sexual Content or Nudity". Wattpad on the App Store.
• Google Play: the listing shows Teen, which is the store's 13+ tier. Wattpad on Google Play.
• Content Guidelines: the Mature rating is labelled 17+, and explicit scenes are for characters aged "18+ or as otherwise applicable". It adds that age requirements for Mature content may vary by region. Content Guidelines.

The age check is a self-declared age. Our records of the help article say Mature content is switched on in settings: an "Include Mature" toggle under Profile, Settings and Content Preferences, and a search filter. That help article returned no text when we re-checked, so treat that part as the record and not a fresh reading. We looked for a blanket statement that all characters are adults in the Content Guidelines, the Payment Policy, the Premium page and the App Store text, and did not find one. The nearest wording is the Mature rule above. That describes the pages we read, not the stories.

Is Wattpad free?

Reading is free with ads. The App Store lists the app as free with in-app purchases and "Contains Advertising", and Premium removes the ads. You cannot browse much without an account: the Terms say "You can't browse very much on the Site or use the Services without registering for an account." Paid Wattpad Originals unlock with Coins. Offline downloads are limited without Premium, though the limit for free users is not stated.

How much Wattpad costs

Checked October 27, 2026. Source: wattpad.com. Prices change with region, promotions and the store you buy through.

Read the table in two groups. The web page prices are "From" prices, billed in local currency: Premium from $4.99 a month and Premium+ from $7.49. The App Store prices are higher: Monthly Premium is $5.99 and Monthly Premium+ is $9.99, so the same tier costs $1.00 more a month for Premium and $2.50 more for Premium+ through Apple. The yearly App Store prices are $59.99 for Premium and $89.99 for Premium+, which work out at about $5.00 and $7.50 a month. Against twelve monthly payments, the year saves $11.89 on Premium and $29.89 on Premium+. The web page does not print an annual price.

What each tier includes, per the Premium page: Premium removes ads, gives "Unlimited offline stories", adds bonus Coins on every Coin purchase and includes Premium Picks, a free monthly bundle of five Wattpad Originals. Premium+ adds 200 bonus Coins a month. The trial is a "7-day free trial", and the page does not say whether a card is needed.

Coins, and the arithmetic we can and cannot do

Coins unlock paid Wattpad Originals. The Payment Policy says purchased Coins never expire, while Bonus Coins, earned for example from a free trial, a Coin bundle or an active subscription, do: Coins from a free trial expire when the trial does, and other Bonus Coins 30 days after receipt. Purchases made with Coins are non-refundable.

The US App Store lists three packs: 9 Coins for $0.99, 74 for $3.99 and 244 for $8.99. That is about 11 cents a Coin for the smallest pack, 5.4 cents for the middle and 3.7 cents for the largest. We cannot convert that into a price per chapter or per story, because the Coin cost of an Original was not read, and the listing shows only ten purchases, so the pack list may be partial. At the largest pack rate, 200 Coins would cost about $7.37 to buy, against the $2.50 Premium+ adds on the web page and $4.00 on the App Store, but Premium+ bonus Coins expire after 30 days, so the two are not like for like. Our guide to how story app credits work and the credit-based reading entry explain the model, and cliffhanger paywall covers the pattern where a paid chapter sits at a story's turning point.

Renewal, cancelling and refunds

Subscriptions renew automatically. The Payment Policy says you are "charged immediately and then every one, six, or twelve months", and that the subscription renews on the same basis. Cancelling is done through the store where you bought it: "You can cancel your subscription at any time and you won't be charged again." To avoid a charge after a free trial, cancel before the trial ends. The refund rule is that all purchases are final and non-refundable except in limited circumstances, refunds may be available from the App Store or Google Play, and "We don't give refunds for the period of time between when you cancel and when your subscription ends." For the mechanics across services, see our guide to cancelling a story app subscription.

Apps, web and offline reading

Wattpad runs on iPhone, Android and the web. The Google Play listing shows 100M+ downloads, ads and in-app purchases. Offline reading is a Premium perk, and our offline reading page lists the services that document it.

For writers

Publishing is free. The Terms say "You own all the rights to the content you create and post on the Wattpad Services", with Wattpad taking a nonexclusive licence to publish it. Wattpad Originals are paid titles and Wattpad Studios scouts writers for media deals, per the App Store description. The "Ads on Wattpad" help article, as recorded, says "there are currently no opportunities to make money from ads on your stories". Revenue share, payout terms and eligibility for Paid Stories are not public, because the help article needs a login. The pages that cover money are how erotica platforms pay writers and how to publish erotica.

Privacy and billing

We did not record a card descriptor, privacy policy details or the Data safety section, so we say nothing about them. Wattpad After Dark, which readers sometimes search for, is no longer an app according to our records: wattpad.com/afterdark now redirects to a volunteer-run profile named "AfterDark", which is not a Wattpad service.

In short

Wattpad is a free, ad-supported social platform whose own guidelines permit explicit sexual scenes between adults in Mature stories and ban pornography. Its Premium prices are lower on the web page than through Apple, its Coins are cheapest in the biggest pack, and its age ratings range from 13 in the Terms to 17+ for Mature. This is a read of the published policy and prices, not an assessment of any story or a recommendation.

If you came for adult stories, the services whose own rules allow explicit fiction, set out on their pages, include Literotica, Smashwords and Archive of Our Own. For head-to-heads see Literotica vs Wattpad and Tapas vs Wattpad, and for a wider list Wattpad alternatives. The platforms section has every service we cover.
