FictionPress Review

Free archive

FictionPress is an archive for original fiction and poetry, the sister site to FanFiction.Net, and its guidelines say it does not accept explicit content. This FictionPress review quotes those rules, sets them beside its sister site's, and lists what the pages we read do not say, which is a good deal: it is the thinnest record in this section, and we say so instead of padding it.

Quick answer

  • Rules: the Guidelines say "Please note FictionPress does not accept explicit content, Fiction Rating: MA, and the rating is only presented for reference." Entry titles and summaries must be rated G. The guidelines version is dated 11-03-2005.
  • Removal: the Terms (last updated February 12, 2019, section 7B) let the site remove content such as pornography and obscene material.
  • Price: the pages we read state no price or paywall. A free tier is not confirmed beyond its sister site's wording.
  • Age: the Terms say you must be over 13. There is no store listing of its own, so there is no store rating to set against it.
  • Where: the web. We found no separate FictionPress app.

What Is FictionPress?

FictionPress is an archive for original fiction and poetry. It is the sister site to FanFiction.Net: the FanFiction.Net Guidelines send non-fan-fiction literary works to FictionPress, and the two share a structure, a set of rules and a seller name on the app stores. The Terms of Service name the operator only as FictionPress.com, and we found no fuller legal name on the pages we read. The Terms were last updated on February 12, 2019.

The site loads in a normal browser. A script gets the same bot challenge that FanFiction.Net returns, so the wording below is as recorded from a browser session on October 27, 2026 and not a fresh fetch of ours.

FictionPress review: who it suits

This is an explainer for a reader who searched for adult fiction and came here, so it is not a recommendation. Going by the Guidelines, FictionPress suits a writer or reader of original stories and poetry within a no-explicit-content rule. It is a weaker fit for anyone who wants explicit stories, since the Guidelines say it does not accept them. It is also a weaker fit for a reader who wants facts about the library, because the pages we read publish few.

What the Guidelines say

The FictionPress Guidelines are dated 11-03-2005, so they are over twenty years old. They follow the structure of the FanFiction.Net Guidelines, and in summary they say:

  • "Please note FictionPress does not accept explicit content, Fiction Rating: MA, and the rating is only presented for reference.";
  • the title and summary of an entry must be rated G;
  • interactive entries and chat or script formats are not allowed entries.

The Terms of Service (section 7B) add that the site may remove content such as pornography and obscene material. We read nothing on the pages that tells us how the rule is applied to a given story, and we have not read the archive, so we do not describe what its stories contain.

The two sites differ in one rule worth noticing: FictionPress asks for a G rating on titles and summaries, while FanFiction.Net asks for K. Our page on its sister goes through that side in more detail.

Age: what the Terms say

Section 12 of the Terms says "You affirm that you are over the age of 13, as the FictionPress.com Service is not intended for children under 13." The age check is therefore an affirmation, and no document check is described. FictionPress has no store listing of its own, so there is no store rating to set against the Terms. We looked for a statement that all characters are adults in the Guidelines, the Terms of Service and the home page, and did not find one. That describes the pages we read, not the stories.

Is FictionPress free?

The pages we read state no price and no paywall, and its sister site is free to read. Beyond that wording, a free tier is not confirmed, so we do not state one as a fact. Ads, billing, refunds and cancellation were not read, because no paid tier was found. Whether you need an account to read is not confirmed either.

FictionPress publishes no price we could read. Only prices printed on an official pricing page or a store listing go on this site.

No app of its own

WhereAvailableNotes
iPhone and iPadNoNo separate FictionPress app in an iTunes search on 2026-10-27. The app published under the FictionPress Inc seller name is the FanFiction.Net app; whether it covers FictionPress stories is not stated on the pages read.
AndroidNoThe Google Play id com.fictionpress.fictionpress returns 404 (HTTP 404 on 2026-10-27). A Google Play search for 'fictionpress' shows only the FanFiction.Net app, published by FictionPress.
Web browserYesWeb reading; scripts get a bot challenge and a browser loads it.

An iTunes search for the name on October 27, 2026 showed no separate FictionPress app. The only result under the FictionPress Inc seller name is the FanFiction.Net app, and whether that app also serves FictionPress stories is not stated on the pages we read. The Google Play address that a FictionPress app would use, com.fictionpress.fictionpress, returns a 404, and a Google Play search for the name shows only the FanFiction.Net app, published by FictionPress. So the web is the one confirmed way in. For reference, the FanFiction.Net app is rated 16+ on the App Store, with advisories for mature or suggestive themes and sexual content or nudity, and Google Play lists it as Teen.

What the pages we read do not say

This record is thin, so here is the list of what is not published or not confirmed, so you do not have to look for it on this page:

  • the library size, the genres and the languages;
  • whether there is audio, offline reading or any interactive story (interactive entries are not allowed by the Guidelines);
  • whether AI-written stories are permitted;
  • whether authors are paid, and any revenue or payout terms;
  • ads, a billing descriptor, refund rules, cancellation steps and privacy practices;
  • the operator's legal name beyond "FictionPress.com".

Our general guidance, as advice and not a finding about this site, is to read the date on any rules page before relying on it. These Guidelines date from 2005 and the Terms from 2019, so current practice may differ from the text.

For writers

The Terms let account holders submit original work. Free publishing and the absence of author payment are what the sister-site record shows, but no page we read states author payment for FictionPress, so we do not state it. Because the Guidelines reject explicit content, a writer of explicit fiction would need another route; our page on platforms that ban erotica explains where the lines fall, and how to publish erotica compares routes.

Privacy and billing

The privacy practices were not read. For what to look for in a free site's policy, see whether erotica apps are private.

Where explicit fiction sits instead

If the rules above rule this site out for you, other pages set out services whose own policies allow explicit fiction: Archive of Our Own, which allows works of every rating, Literotica, an adults-only story site, and Smashwords, a store that hides erotica until a registered user asks. Each page quotes its own rules and none is a recommendation. Tapas and Wattpad, the other places readers look first, are compared in Tapas vs Wattpad. The platforms section lists every service we cover.

FAQ

Does FictionPress allow explicit content?

No, per its Guidelines: "Please note FictionPress does not accept explicit content, Fiction Rating: MA, and the rating is only presented for reference." The Terms also let the site remove pornography and obscene material.

Is FictionPress the same as FanFiction.Net?

They are sister sites, not the same site. FictionPress is for original fiction and poetry, FanFiction.Net is for fan fiction, and the rules are near-identical. The FanFiction.Net app is published under the FictionPress Inc name.

How old do you have to be for FictionPress?

The Terms say you affirm you are over the age of 13. No check is described, and the site has no store listing of its own.

Is FictionPress free?

The pages we read state no price or paywall, and its sister site is free, but a free tier is not confirmed for FictionPress itself.

Does FictionPress have an app?

None of its own that we found. The only app under the FictionPress Inc name is the FanFiction.Net app, and whether it serves FictionPress stories is not stated.

What is the FictionPress rating system?

The Guidelines say the rating shown for MA content is "only presented for reference" because explicit content is not accepted, and that the title and summary of an entry must be rated G.
