Quick answer
- Three kinds: free archives (Literotica, plus the community sites Chyoa and Outfox Stories), stores that sell by the title (Smashwords, Google Play Books, Apple Books) and subscription libraries (Audible from $8.99 a month, Everand and Kindle+ from $11.99).
- Clearest written rules on erotica: Literotica and Smashwords. Smashwords shows erotica only to registered users who switch it on and says
Pornography has never been allowed at Smashwords
. - Largest published shelf: Audible's Erotica category, 55,012 titles, although its filters show 2,870 of them are Sex Instruction. Its Conditions of Use say nothing we could find on adult content.
- Least clear: Kindle+, Apple Books and Google Play Books. Amazon says it does not sell pornography, Apple bans undefined explicit content, and Google allows explicit books with a value test and a mature flag. None says which erotic titles pass.
- On a phone: the three libraries and Google Play Books have store apps for iPhone and Android, and Apple Books is iPhone, iPad and Mac only. Literotica, Smashwords and Chyoa have none that we found and work in a browser.
Three kinds of platform
When we read the Google results for this search on October 27, 2026, most of them were not for readers at all: Reddit and Facebook threads about where to publish serialised erotica, lists of publishers that accept manuscripts, and writing forums. That is a reasonable thing to type, and we answer it at the end of the page. This list is for the reader, and it covers reading sites rather than apps; it is one of the lists in our best-of section. If you want an app, best erotica apps is the page.
A free archive is a site where users publish and everyone reads, such as Literotica and Chyoa. It is the cheapest kind to enter, its quality is whatever users write, and its rules are the platform's own. A store sells you a book at a price, like Smashwords, and the rules come from the store and the distributors behind it. A subscription library, such as Audible, Everand or Kindle+, lets you borrow or stream from a licensed catalogue for a monthly fee, and erotica is a section of a much larger shelf. The reader's practical question is the same in all three: does the platform say, in writing, that it carries erotica?
How we picked, and what we could not test
Seven platforms are ranked. Two tests decide the order, and both are things a platform publishes.
- A written rule that allows erotica. A sentence in the terms, guidelines or help pages, not the existence of a category.
- A published erotica shelf. A category, filter or count a reader can use to find it.
Platforms that pass both come first, ordered by how clear the written rule is and then by what they cost to start. Platforms that pass one come next, and within that group a published count for the erotica shelf goes first, then a category, then a rule with a condition, then a rule nobody defines. The one that passes neither comes last. Price, phone access and how the age check works are given in each entry. The two explicit community sites, Chyoa and Outfox Stories, are on the porn story apps list, where they are ranked on the same rules, and they appear in the table below. The order is a judgement from published facts and not a calculation, and we publish no scores.
We did not subscribe to, buy from or read any of these. We cannot tell you what an Erotica category looks like once you are inside it, how well search works, or whether a given title is any good. Catalogue sizes are the platforms' own claims. The libraries are far too large for us to audit, and the community archives are written by users. Prices were read on October 27, 2026 and change with country and promotion.
The seven picks

Literotica
Best free archive, with the clearest written rules
Free
- Type
- Free community site for adult stories (web only)
- Free tier
- Yes
- Library
- 500,000+ stories
- Explicit content
- Yes
- Creator program
- Free publishing for members, contests and awards; no direct author pay
- Web version
- Yes
Literotica is a free community site for adult fiction with stories, audio, interactive story games and comics. Its Terms say the site is for adults over 18, or the age of consent where that is higher, and reading needs no account. The About page claims more than 500,000 stories. Its Content Guidelines say what cannot be published, and a footer on every page reads Characters in all stories are over 18
. Works generated by AI cannot be published.
It is first because it passes both tests and costs nothing. It has no store app, and the age check is acceptance by visiting. Writers are not paid directly. Offline reading is not confirmed.

Smashwords
Best store where erotica is a switch you control
Pay per title
- Type
- Independent DRM-free ebook store (web only), no subscription
- Free tier
- Yes
- Library
- Over one million original DRM-free ebooks (vendor claim)
- Explicit content
- Yes, hidden by default: registered users switch on 'Filtering' to see erotica
- Creator program
- No
- Web version
- Yes
Smashwords is an independent DRM-free ebook store. Its About page says that as of January 2026 it became a dedicated ebook store only, and it claims over a million books, including nearly 100,000 priced at free. Erotica is hidden by default: before it shows in merchandising or search, a customer must be a registered user and must affirmatively ask to see it, with options for mainstream erotica only or mainstream plus taboo. Its guidelines, updated March 10, 2026, call erotica words-only
, say Pornography has never been allowed at Smashwords
, and label taboo themes so readers can choose.
It is second because it passes both tests and charges per title, not by the month. Files are plain DRM-free downloads, so they work in any reader. Watch for: no iPhone or Android app, a registered account is needed to buy, and writers who used to publish here now go through Draft2Digital, as our news item on Smashwords becoming a store only explains.

Audible (Erotica category)
Largest published erotica shelf, in a subscription
$8.99/mo
- Type
- general audiobook retailer and subscription, covered for its Erotica category
- Free tier
- No
- Library
- Erotica category: 55,012 titles on 2026-10-27
- Explicit content
- Not confirmed
- Creator program
- Not confirmed
- Web version
- Yes
Audible is a general audiobook retailer whose Erotica category showed 55,012 titles on October 27, 2026. Its filters show 51,603 under Literature and Fiction and 2,870 under Sex Instruction, so the count mixes fiction and instruction. Standard is $8.99 a month for one audiobook a month and Premium Plus is $14.95 with one credit that rolls over, each with a 30-day trial for new members. There are apps for iPhone and Android, and a web player.
It is third because it passes one test: the shelf is plain to see and the rule is not. The Conditions of Use, last updated September 10, 2025, contain no sentence on explicit content or a minimum age that we could find, and the catalogue is too big to audit for characters' ages. It is the right choice only if you already pay for audiobooks.

Everand
Subscription library with an Erotica category behind the paywall
$11.99/mo
- Type
- Subscription library of ebooks, audiobooks and podcasts
- Free tier
- No
- Library
- Millions of audiobooks and ebooks (vendor claim)
- Explicit content
- Unclear: an Erotica category exists for mature audiences; limits for licensed titles are not stated
- Creator program
- Not confirmed
- Web version
- Yes
Everand is a subscription library of ebooks, audiobooks and podcasts from the company behind Scribd. It has a dedicated Erotica category, and as we recorded the category page it says the selection is for mature audiences and that a subscription is needed to browse it. The price is from $11.99 a month after a trial, which is 30 days when you subscribe on the website and 7 days through the App Store, both with one free title. The Global Terms require users to be 18 or older.
It is fourth because the category exists and the limits are unwritten: the terms bar pornographic and obscene content that users upload, but they do not describe the licensed titles Everand carries from publishers. The App Store rates the app 18+ while Google Play lists it as Everyone, below the terms' floor, and we record both. Fees are non-refundable except as its refund policy sets out. Our Everand against Kindle+ comparison sets the two subscriptions side by side.

Google Play Books
Store already on your phone, explicit only with a value test and a flag
Pay per title
- Type
- Ebook and audiobook store and reader app (buy per title)
- Free tier
- Yes
- Library
- Millions of ebooks, audiobooks, comics and manga (vendor claim)
- Explicit content
- Only with educational, artistic, historical or documentary value, and a 'For mature audiences' flag
- Creator program
- Yes
- Web version
- Not confirmed
Google Play Books is Google's store and reader app for ebooks and audiobooks, sold by the title with no subscription found. The app is free, free samples and some free titles exist, and it runs on iPhone and Android with downloads for reading offline. Its Partner Center policy says We allow sexually explicit content and images of nudity with educational, artistic, historical, or documentary value
, requires publishers to mark such books For mature audiences
, and does not allow pornographic content.
It is fifth because the rule exists but depends on a test nobody can check for a given title: whether an erotic novel has educational, artistic, historical or documentary value is not published. The age check is not described. The Android app has 1B+ downloads.

Apple Books
Store already on your iPhone, with an undefined explicit rule
Pay per title
- Type
- Ebook and audiobook store and reader app (buy per title)
- Free tier
- Yes
- Library
- Millions of bestsellers, new releases and classics (vendor claim)
- Explicit content
- Unclear: 'prohibited explicit or objectionable content' is not allowed and the term is not defined
- Creator program
- Yes
- Web version
- Not confirmed
Apple Books is Apple's app and store for ebooks and audiobooks. The app is free, there is no subscription, titles are priced individually, thousands are free, and titles can be downloaded for offline use. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, CarPlay and Apple Vision Pro, and there is no Android app. Its Store guidelines say Books cannot contain prohibited explicit or objectionable content
and do not define the term.
It is sixth because the rule is undefined. Apple's writers' help pages tell authors to flag sexually explicit books and say customers with parental restrictions on cannot view or download them, but no page we read says which erotic books are prohibited or what Apple removes in practice. The App Store rates the app 13+ with in-app controls.

Kindle+ (formerly Kindle Unlimited)
Large general library, with no stated erotica rule
$11.99/mo
- Type
- Ebook and audiobook subscription library (borrow model)
- Free tier
- No
- Library
- More than 5 million ebooks plus thousands of audiobooks, comics, manga and magazines (vendor claim)
- Explicit content
- Unclear: pornography is not sold; no erotica-specific rule on the pages read
- Creator program
- Yes
- Web version
- Yes
Kindle+ is Amazon's monthly subscription for borrowing ebooks and audiobooks, read in the Kindle app on iPhone, Android and the web. It is $11.99 a month plus taxes, you can borrow up to 20 titles at a time, and new subscribers get a 30-day trial. Amazon claims more than five million ebooks. Erotica is not a labelled part of the subscription on the pages we read.
It is seventh because it passes neither test. Amazon's publishing guidelines say it does not sell content that contains pornography, without defining the word, and no page we read states an erotica rule. Fees already paid are not refunded. The change of name is covered in Kindle Unlimited is now Kindle+.

What each platform's rules say about erotica
This table is the spine of the list. It adds the platforms that carry or refuse erotica but are not picks, so the rule is in one place. Quotations are the platforms' own words, and a blank means the pages we read are silent.
| Platform | Kind | What its own rules say | What it costs to read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free archive | Adult-only terms; all characters over 18; works by AI barred | Free | |
| Store | Words-only erotica, hidden until a registered user switches it on; taboo themes labelled | Per title; nearly 100,000 free | |
| Free archive | Six rules; footer says all characters are over 18 | Free, with ads | |
| Community site | Explicit welcome under written rules; adults-only cast for Mature | Free after a delay; Basic $8 a month | |
| Library | Erotica category; Conditions of Use silent | $8.99 or $14.95 a month | |
| Library | Erotica category for mature audiences; limits for licensed titles not stated | From $11.99 a month | |
| Library | Pornography not sold; no erotica rule found | $11.99 a month | |
| Store | "Books cannot contain prohibited explicit or objectionable content", undefined | Per title; thousands free | |
| Store | Explicit content only with educational, artistic, historical or documentary value, flagged "For mature audiences" | Per title | |
| Social platform | Explicit scenes only in Mature stories; pornographic content "created primarily for sexual arousal" banned | Free with ads; Premium from $4.99 a month | |
| Webcomic and novel platform | "Any and all content intended for sexual gratification is not allowed" | Free on a timer; Ink to unlock | |
| Free archives | Explicit content, rating MA, not accepted | Free | |
| Free archive of fan works | Works of every rating; Mature, Explicit and unrated works show a warning screen. We make no recommendation | Free, no ads |
Community sites that are explicit by their own rules
Two more sites are explicit by written rule and are archives in the sense that readers can write the stories: Chyoa and Outfox Stories. We rank them on our porn story apps list, where the question is what each says about explicit text, and so they are not picks here. The facts that matter for a platform comparison are short. Chyoa is free and ad-supported, with six written rules and a footer saying all characters are over 18, though we found no separate terms page or named operator. Outfox Stories puts every story behind Premium first, moves most to the free tier a few months later, and costs $8 a month for Basic. Both are branching fiction. Neither is covered by a store app that we found.
Smashwords, Apple Books and Google Play Books make a useful contrast with them: Smashwords writes its rule down and the two phone stores leave a gap that the research cannot close.
Platforms that ban it or confine it
Four large reading platforms do not publish erotica as a product. Wattpad confines explicit scenes to Mature stories, Tapas bars content intended for sexual gratification, and FanFiction.Net and FictionPress do not accept explicit content. They turn up in searches for erotic fiction and they are not the answer. Our page on romance reading apps covers the mainstream end in detail.
Reading on a phone
Platform here means the website first, so the phone question has three answers. Audible, Everand, Kindle+ and Google Play Books have store apps for iPhone and Android, with offline downloads, and Apple Books is for iPhone, iPad and Mac only. Literotica, Smashwords and Chyoa have no store app we could find, and you read them in Safari or Chrome. Smashwords files can be downloaded and opened in any reader. For what runs on which phone, see the lists for iPhone and Android. Audio-only libraries, which behave like subscription libraries, are covered in the audio section, among them Bloom Stories, which runs on the web and in apps, and femtasy, which is browser only.
If you came to publish, not to read
Most of the results for this search are written for authors. We keep that apart from this list because the questions are different: payment, exclusivity, which payment processors allow erotica and what happens when one drops you. Start with our guide to the best erotica platforms for writers, and see the platforms section for each service's own page.
FAQ
What is the best site to read erotic fiction?
For free reading with the clearest written rules, Literotica. For buying a book with an erotica switch you control, Smashwords. For a large licensed catalogue, a subscription library such as Audible, with the caveat that it states no erotica rule we could find. The community sites Chyoa and Outfox Stories are on our porn story list.
Does Kindle+ have erotica?
Amazon says it does not sell pornography, and its pages do not describe erotica as a labelled part of Kindle+. Whether a given erotic ebook is in the subscription is not published, and we cannot check titles.
Does Everand have erotica?
It has a dedicated Erotica category, which as we recorded it says the selection is for mature audiences and needs a subscription to browse. The rules for licensed titles are not stated.
Can you buy erotica on Apple Books or Google Play Books?
Both carry some explicit books under rules that leave a gap. Apple bans prohibited explicit or objectionable content without defining it. Google allows sexually explicit content with educational, artistic, historical or documentary value if it is flagged for mature audiences. Neither says which erotic novels pass.
Why is erotica hidden on Smashwords?
By its own guidelines, erotica does not show in merchandising or search until a registered customer asks to see it. Customers choose mainstream erotica only or mainstream plus taboo, and taboo titles carry labels.
Is there an erotic fiction site with no sign-up?
Literotica needs no account to read, Chyoa lets you read most visible stories signed out, and Outfox Stories says no account is required. Smashwords hides erotica from guests, and Everand and Kindle+ need an account.
