Quick answer
- Rules: "Any and all content intended for sexual gratification is not allowed", and "Any novel's intended purpose should not be to solely provide erotic satisfaction (i.e. porn without plot)". The guidelines are dated March 9, 2022.
- The contradiction: the website has a Mature tab and its home page markets "Mature Versions Available" and "The spicier cuts? Only on our website!", while the written rule and the apps are stricter. We record both and do not resolve them.
- Price: free to read through "Wait Until Free" timers, with episodes unlockable early with Ink. Ink pack prices and episode costs are not published on the pages we read.
- Age: the Terms say 13 or older, the App Store lists 16+ with content restrictions and Age Assurance controls, and Google Play lists
Teen
. - Where: web, iPhone and Android. Google Play lists ads and in-app purchases.
What Is Tapas?
Tapas is a platform for webcomics and web novels. The Google Play text calls it "The Ultimate App for Comics, Novels, Mangas, Manhwas, Webtoons and More", and names romance, action, fantasy and BL among the genres. The App Store text claims "thousands of premium comics and novels" and "over 75,000 talented creators". Those are the company's claims, not counts.
The Terms say the services "are provided by Tapas Entertainment, Inc." The App Store seller line reads Radish Media, Inc. and its copyright line reads Tapas Media, Inc. Radish's own sunset notice says Radish and Tapas are separate apps and businesses; Radish itself closed, as our news item on story apps that closed records, so the seller name on the listing should not be read as meaning the two are one service.
Tapas review: who it suits
Going by the store text and the home page, Tapas suits a reader of webcomics and web novels who is happy to wait for free episodes or pay with Ink, and who wants romance and fantasy with the content held inside the rules below. It is a weaker fit if you came for explicit stories, since its written rules exclude content intended for sexual gratification. It is also a weaker fit if you want a clear price, because the Ink prices are not published on the pages we read.
What the content guidelines say
The Content and Community Guidelines, last modified March 9, 2022, are the written rule. That date is old, so check the page before relying on any detail here. The section on mature and sexual content says, in our summary and with the page's own wording where we quote it:
- "Any and all content intended for sexual gratification is not allowed.";
- "Any novel's intended purpose should not be to solely provide erotic satisfaction (i.e. porn without plot).";
- on the apps, artwork with "nudity, full or partial, or depictions of any sexual act" is not allowed, including covers, banners and novel artwork;
- on the web, "non-sexual nudity and censored sexual acts may be allowed";
- "Content including or depicting the sexualization of minors is not allowed";
- graphic violence and the glorification of self-harm are restricted, and "AI generated content is not allowed on Tapas".
The creators site explains the reason it gives: Tapas is "subject to following rules set by app stores and partners. That means we are unable to promote and host independent series containing mature content", and it says it generally recommends "publishing more mature scenes on personal sites or platforms that allow such content behind a paywall". Our guide to why erotica apps disappear from the App Store sets out those store rules.
The Mature tab, and why the record contradicts itself
The written rule and the website do not point the same way, and we publish each side.
- The written policy: content intended for sexual gratification is not allowed, per the Content and Community Guidelines (last modified March 9, 2022).
- The marketing: the tapas.io home page carries a row labelled "Mature Versions Available" with the line "The spicier cuts? Only on our website!", and the web has a Mature tab. In a logged-out fetch of the static page, the tab loaded with no age gate; scripted prompts were not tested.
- The creators site: says Tapas is unable to promote or host independent series containing mature content because of app store and partner rules, in its content guidelines for creators.
The pages we read do not say what the Mature tab contains or where it draws its line, and we do not link to it. What a reader can rely on is the written rule: content intended for sexual gratification is not allowed on Tapas.
Is Tapas free?
Largely. Many series are free through Wait Until Free. The Google Play text promises "exclusive free episodes dropping every three hours" and says "Simply wait for your timer to run out, and you can read the next episode for free". The home page labels a row "FREE Every 3 Hours!". Episodes can also be unlocked early with Ink or bundles, and the apps offer perks such as Gift Passes, free Ink and weekly Fortune Cookies with random bonus Ink. A trial for the Premium Program is not confirmed, because its help article needs a sign-in. Whether a logged-out visitor can read a full episode was not tested.
Ink, and what we cannot work out
Tapas publishes no price we could read. Only prices printed on an official pricing page or a store listing go on this site.
Ink is the virtual currency used to unlock episodes and to tip creators. The Terms say virtual currencies like Ink "have no 'real world' value, but may be exchanged by you for designated items". Under the Support Program, fans tip in Ink and the amount converts to real-world currency for the creator. Neither the price of an Ink pack nor the Ink cost of an episode is published on the pages we read: the Ink page redirects to a sign-in, and the iPhone listing shows no list of purchases. So we do no per-episode arithmetic. Our guide to how story app credits work explains why that matters, and the cliffhanger paywall entry describes the pattern timers and paid unlocks tend to produce.
A Refund Policy article exists in the Terms help section and was not read. Cancellation steps and the card descriptor were not recorded either.
Age: three answers
The Terms say "You affirm that you are 13 years of age or older". The App Store lists the app as 16+ with content restrictions: "Some content may be rated higher, and may therefore be restricted and managed by the developer through in-app controls", with Age Assurance listed among the controls, and the advisories "Frequent: Mature or Suggestive Themes" and "Infrequent: Sexual Content or Nudity". Google Play lists it as Teen
. The age check in the Terms is an affirmation; we found no document check. We looked for a statement that all characters are adults in the Terms, the guidelines and the store listings, and did not find one. The nearest wording is the prohibition on sexualising people under 18, which is a rule and not a statement about all characters. That describes the pages we read, not the series.
Apps, web and ads
| Where | Available | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone and iPad | Yes | Tapas Comics and Novels; seller shown as Radish Media, Inc.; free. |
| Android | Yes | Tapas Entertainment Inc.; contains ads and in-app purchases; 10M+ downloads, 126K reviews. |
| Web browser | Yes | Web reading, including a Mature tab (tapas.io/menu/5) that exists on the web. |
The web carries the full site, including the Mature tab mentioned above. The Google Play listing shows ads, in-app purchases and 10M+ downloads and was updated on September 30, 2026; the iPhone listing also declares advertising. Audio, interactive stories and offline reading are not confirmed on the pages we read.
For writers
Posting is free. The Terms describe an Ad Revenue Program, in which creators over 18 apply and Tapas takes a 30% fee, with Tapas covering third-party credit card costs, paid by PayPal once the balance reaches $25. They also describe a Support Program, in which the creator takes 100% of the tip after third-party fees, and an Originals Program. The creators site describes the programmes unlocking at subscriber thresholds. Mature material is the sticking point: because of the store rules above, Tapas says it cannot promote or host mature independent series. How this compares with other routes is in platforms that ban erotica and how erotica platforms pay writers.
Privacy and billing
Whether an account is needed to read a full episode is not confirmed. We did not record a privacy policy address, a card descriptor or the Data safety section.
In short
Tapas is a free-to-read, timer-and-Ink webcomic and web novel site whose written rules bar content intended for sexual gratification and whose website still markets a Mature tab. It sets 13 as its Terms age, 16+ on the App Store and Teen
on Google Play. This is a reading of its published rules, not a recommendation, and we have not used the service.
For a side-by-side with the larger social site, read Tapas vs Wattpad. The platforms section lists the services whose own rules allow explicit fiction.
FAQ
Does Tapas allow adult content?
The written rule says "Any and all content intended for sexual gratification is not allowed", and the apps bar artwork with nudity or sexual acts. The website nonetheless has a Mature tab and markets "Mature Versions Available". The guidelines are dated March 9, 2022.
What is the Mature tab on Tapas?
It is a tab on the website. The pages we read do not say what it contains or where it draws its line, and the written rules and the creators site say mature content cannot be promoted or hosted for independent series. We do not link to it.
How does Tapas Wait Until Free work?
Per the Google Play text, free episodes drop every three hours, and when your timer runs out you can read the next episode for free. Episodes can also be unlocked with Ink.
How much is Tapas Ink?
Not published on the pages we read. The Ink page needs a sign-in and the iPhone listing shows no purchase list, so we cannot give a pack price or an episode cost.
How old do you have to be to use Tapas?
The Terms say 13 or older. The App Store lists 16+ with content restrictions, and Google Play lists Teen
