AI Dungeon Review

AI story tool

AI Dungeon is a text adventure where you type what happens next and an AI model continues the story. It is free to start, with paid tiers from $14.99 to $99.99 a month that differ in context size, Memories and monthly credits. This AI Dungeon review covers the tiers, the Mature setting that unlocks adult content for accounts that confirm they are 18+, and what the published rules say about characters under 18.

Quick answer

  • Price: a free tier, then $14.99 (Journey), $29.99 (Legend), $49.99 (Mythic) and $99.99 (Ultimate) a month on the web pricing page. Three web-only Shadow Tiers run from $246.66 to $996.66.
  • What the tiers sell: context size. The free tier gets 4k tokens on most models and Ultimate gets 64k on the pricing page, although the help page still says 32k for Mythic and Ultimate.
  • Adult content: allowed through an account-wide Mature setting, which requires confirming you are 18+. Whether the free tier can switch it on is not stated.
  • Where: web, iPhone (rated 13+) and Android. The terms set a general minimum age of 13, with some features limited to adults.
  • Characters under 18: a detailed written rule, plus a filter that runs even on Mature. We found no sentence saying all characters are adults.

What Is AI Dungeon?

AI Dungeon is an AI text adventure game run by Latitude, Inc. of Salt Lake City. Its home page calls it a free AI text adventure game where players create open-ended stories and guide every choice, online or in the app. You type actions, speech or story text, and the model continues the scene.

You can build a custom scenario or jump into community-made adventures. There is no fixed library to count: the community adventures are made by users and the site publishes no figure for them. Nothing is written in advance, which makes this a different product from a branching story with authored choices (our page on branching choices covers that kind).

AI Dungeon review: who it suits

Going by what the site and its help pages say, AI Dungeon suits someone who would rather steer a story by typing than by picking from a list, and who is prepared to pay for a bigger context window once an adventure gets long. It runs in a browser and in phone apps.

It is a weaker fit if you want finished stories to read, a library to browse or narration: audio and voice are not confirmed on the pages we read. It is also a weaker fit if you want one flat price with nothing to count. Paid tiers come with credits, Memories and a menu of models, and each of those has its own limits.

Whose model decides what is allowed

The content rules on an AI story service belong to whoever supplies the model. AI Dungeon's pricing page counts "story generators" (9 on the free tier, 20 on Journey, 21 on Legend, 22 on Mythic and Ultimate) and names models in its context column, among them DeepSeek V4 Flash, GLM, Dynamic Large, Madness, Hearthfire and Harbinger. The pages we read do not say which of these Latitude runs itself and which come from another company, so we cannot tell you whether a provider's own limits sit underneath AI Dungeon's.

What the pages do publish is AI Dungeon's own layer. The help centre describes an account-wide AI Safety Setting with three levels, Safe, Moderate and Mature, and a separate filter for sexual content involving characters under 18 that keeps running on the top level. Both are described below. For how this plays out across the section, see our guide to whether AI story apps allow NSFW.

The Mature setting and what it still blocks

The official wording for the top level is: Using the Mature level will not limit the AI from generating mature, violent, or triggering content. You must confirm that you are 18+ when enabling this level. The confirmation is a declaration, and the pages describe no document check. Whether Mature is available without a paid plan is not stated either way.

Published adventures follow separate rules. Public content must be rated, and the Community Guidelines rate explicit sexual content as Unrated (18+); the changelog entry for that wording is dated July 31, 2026. Private and Unlisted adventures are not moderated beyond what the guidelines call the Walls Approach. Some categories stay unpublishable on public content whatever the rating: bestiality, necrophilia, incest (step-relatives are treated like blood relatives), and non-consensual sexual content or sexual violence.

What the rules say about characters under 18

AI Dungeon publishes one of the more detailed rules in this section. The Community Guidelines bar any exploitation or sexualisation of real or fictional minors, including high schoolers and established underage characters from media, and also bar sexual content implying characters are underage despite disclaimers. The guidelines add that a disclaimer such as All characters are 18+ does not help when the context implies otherwise.

Two further points from the help centre and the guidelines. In play, a filter called Sexual Content Involving Minors, shortened to SCIM, shows a "content not supported" popup even when the setting is Mature. And private and unlisted adventures, though outside the guidelines, fall under the Walls Approach, worded as preventing any content suggesting, promoting, or glorifying the sexual exploitation of children.

We found no sentence stating that all characters are adults on the Community Guidelines, the AI Safety Settings FAQ, the Terms of Service, the home page or the memberships page. The rule works from the other direction, by saying what cannot be written. That describes the pages we read. We have not audited any adventure.

What the tiers hold: context, Memories and credits

AI Dungeon sells its tiers on context size. Context is how much of the story the model can see when it writes the next line, counted in tokens. Anything outside the window is, to the model, as if it never happened, which is why a long adventure can lose a character who was introduced an hour earlier. A bigger window is the main thing a dearer tier buys.

The ladder on the pricing page, checked October 27, 2026, runs 4k tokens on the free tier (2k on Madness, Hearthfire and Harbinger, 3k on DeepSeek V4 Flash), then 8k on Journey, 16k on Legend, 32k on Mythic and 64k on Ultimate. Each step roughly doubles the window, but the price does not keep pace evenly. Journey to Legend doubles it, from $14.99 to $29.99. Legend to Mythic adds two thirds. Mythic to Ultimate doubles it again. Per 1,000 tokens of context that is about $1.87 for Journey and Legend and about $1.56 for Mythic and Ultimate.

For scale, NovelAI's documentation gives four characters to the token for its own models, so 8k tokens is about 32,000 characters of story. We have no equivalent figure for AI Dungeon's models, so use that only as a rough yardstick.

Next to context the pricing page counts Memories: 25 on the free tier, 100 on Journey, 200 on Legend, 400 on Mythic and 800 on Ultimate. We recorded no definition of a Memory, so we report the counts and nothing more.

Credits are the second currency. Journey includes 760 a month, Legend 1,650, Mythic 2,750 and Ultimate 5,200, which works out at roughly 50 to 55 credits per dollar at every tier, so the higher tiers are not a better deal on credits; what they add is context and Memories. According to the pricing-page FAQ, credits refresh each billing cycle, do not expire and accumulate. They pay for image generation, charged per image by model (from 3 credits for FLUX.2 Flash to 60 for Nano Banana Pro), and for temporary extra context on some models. The page's own examples are "Dynamic Large: 4k tokens +4k/credit" and "GLM: 1500 tokens per credit". Extra credits can be bought separately, but we did not record their price.

Two pages that disagree about Ultimate

The pricing page gives Ultimate 64k of context. The help page on membership benefits still says Mythic and Ultimate get 32k. Prices, credits and Memories match on both. We cannot tell which is current and we do not resolve it. If Ultimate's window is the reason you would pay $99.99, check the figure before you buy: on the help page's number, the extra $50 over Mythic buys credits and Memories, not context.

The three Shadow Tiers sit above this ladder and are sold on the web only. Banshee lists up to 128k context, 8,400 credits and 1,200 Memories; Reaper lists 12,500 credits and 1,600 Memories; Apocalypse lists 18,500 credits and 2,000 Memories. The page prints $246.66, $496.66 and $996.66 with no currency code or billing period. The help page says they are monthly only, with no annual option.

The table mixes two kinds of row. The five tiers and the three Shadow Tiers are web prices. The rows beginning "App Store" are in-app purchase items from the US listing, which shows only the first ten, several under legacy names (Champion, Adventurer, Traveler, Legend) and none with a billing period or contents. Champion is the old name of Journey, and one Champion item is $14.99, the same figure as Journey on the web. We cannot match the other items to tiers, so we cannot say whether the apps charge more than the web for Legend, Mythic or Ultimate. Google Play shows only a range, $0.99 to $949.99 per item, with no list.

On annual terms, the help page says 6-month and 12-month terms are discounted and that month-to-month is available. The rendered pricing page shows no term toggle and no discounted prices, so we have no annual figure to quote. For reference, twelve monthly payments come to $179.88 for Journey, $359.88 for Legend, $599.88 for Mythic and $1,199.88 for Ultimate.

A one-week trial comes with a Journey or Legend purchase, according to the memberships page; the trial help page still says "Champion and Legend". It states that premium benefits end when a trial is canceled. Whether a card is needed to start is not stated. For the plan-by-plan view see what AI Dungeon costs.

Renewal, cancelling and refunds

Subscriptions are auto-renewing. The Terms say a subscription renews at the frequency shown on your subscription page, or monthly if none is shown. On the web, the help page says to open your profile picture, then Settings, then Membership; the Terms say to cancel through the subscription settings on your account page. Our guide to cancelling a story app subscription covers the general routine. The privacy policy is linked from the home page; we recorded none of its contents, so see whether erotica apps are private for how the other services compare.

Refunds are narrow. The Terms say there are no refunds for partially used periods. A user who unintentionally keeps a subscription without using the service may email a request, which is reviewed at the company's sole discretion. Payments made through the Apple App Store can only be refunded by Apple, and for Google Play payments the help page says support may be able to request or facilitate a refund.

FAQ

Is AI Dungeon free?

Yes to start. The free tier has 9 story generators, 25 Memories, no monthly credits and 4k tokens of context on most models (2k on three, 3k on one). The home page calls it "a free AI text adventure game". Paid tiers start at $14.99 a month. Whether the free tier can use the Mature setting is not stated.

Does AI Dungeon allow NSFW content?

Yes, through the Mature level of the account-wide AI Safety Setting, which requires you to confirm you are 18+. Sexual content involving characters under 18, and content implying it, stays blocked, and public adventures cannot carry bestiality, necrophilia, incest or non-consensual sexual content.

How much context does AI Dungeon give?

On the pricing page: 4k tokens on the free tier, 8k on Journey, 16k on Legend, 32k on Mythic and 64k on Ultimate. The help page still says 32k for Mythic and Ultimate, and the Banshee Shadow Tier lists up to 128k.

How do I cancel AI Dungeon?

On the web, open your profile picture, then Settings, then Membership. Apple subscribers manage and refund through Apple. There are no refunds for partially used periods.

Is there an AI Dungeon app?

Yes. There is an iPhone app rated 13+ on the App Store and an Android app on Google Play, plus the web game at play.aidungeon.com.

Are the app prices the same as the web prices?

We cannot say. The App Store lists items under old tier names with no billing period, and only the first ten are shown. Google Play shows a range of $0.99 to $949.99 per item.

Final verdict

AI Dungeon fits a reader who wants to type their way through an open-ended story, wants to try it free first, and understands that the paid tiers are a context-size ladder. Read the pricing page and the help page together before paying for Ultimate, because they disagree. We have not played it, so this is a read of the published tiers and rules, not of how the stories turn out.
