Quick answer
- Allow it in their own words: AI Dungeon (a Mature level you confirm as 18+), Erota, NovelX, DreamPress AI, Pirr (an opt-in setting, off by default), Outfox Stories and Satinaire (spice level 4 and above, for accounts aged 18+).
- Ban explicit content: StoryLoom, an AI service rated 18+ on the App Store, whose policy says
pornographic content is not permitted
. Dorian, a platform for creator-made romance games, does the same beside an 18+ rating. - Say nothing: NovelAI and DreamGen. Their terms do not ban adult content and do not say it is allowed, so the records say not confirmed.
- Depends on the model: Sudowrite and NovelCrafter, two writers' tools. Sudowrite's own Muse model has
Virtually none
in content filtering; its OpenAI-based models areStrict
. - Every age check is a declaration. None of the pages we read describes a document check.
Three layers behind one question
"Does it allow NSFW?" sounds like a question about an app, and it is really about three things stacked together. The first is the model, the system that actually writes the text and has its own limits. The second is the app, which sets its own rules about what users may ask for. The third is the stores and payment processors, which set rules about what the app may sell or show. The answer on an app's pages covers only the second layer. So an app's yes is not a guarantee about what the model will write.
This page sorts the AI story services we cover by what their own pages say about the second layer, then explains the first and third. For the services that write explicit text and what they still refuse, see AI porn story generators.
Who allows it, in their own words
| Service | What it says | The condition |
|---|---|---|
Using the Mature level will not limit the AI from generating mature, violent, or triggering content. | An account-wide setting you enable after confirming you are 18+. Whether the free tier can use it is not stated | |
Its home page calls its output Custom Explicit Erotic stories written by AI, and the Terms restrict only minors, animals in sexual contexts, rape or violence, scat and vore | Users warrant they are at least 18 | |
The FAQ: As long as content involves consenting adults (18+) and doesn't violate our safety policies, your kinks are welcome. | An 18+ gate on first load | |
A Content Policy section on Sexual and Erotic Content; the Terms say The Service is strictly for adults. | An 18+ entry gate, and an age check where the law requires it | |
Mature themes are off by default. Only users who confirm they are 18 or older can turn them on in Advanced Settings. | An opt-in setting | |
Adult and NSFW fiction is welcome on Outfox Stories - including explicit sexual content - as long as it follows the rules on this page. | 18+ only; a one-time age verification in some regions | |
Its Terms restrict content rated spice level 4or higher, and its explicit genre categories, to users 18 or older | 17 to create an account; a date of birth when you open restricted content |
The sources are the services' own policy pages, for example the AI Dungeon AI Safety Settings FAQ, the DreamPress AI policies, the Pirr Code of Conduct and the Outfox Stories content guidelines. Allowing is not the same as allowing everything: each of these also publishes a list of exclusions, and the lists differ.
Who forbids it while rated 18+
An 18+ rating describes the audience. It is easy to read it as a promise of explicit content, and two services show that it is not.
StoryLoom is AI-generated interactive fiction for adults, launched on October 20, 2026. Its acceptable-use policy prohibits content that depicts non-consensual sexual content, or is intended primarily to sexually gratify (pornographic content is not permitted)
. The App Store rates it 18+ with Mature or Suggestive Themes listed as frequent and Sexual Content or Nudity as infrequent, and Google Play rates it Mature 17+. Both sides are on the page and we do not reconcile them: the policy is the service's rule and the rating is the store's.
Dorian is not an AI story service. It is a platform where creators build branching romance games, and its guidelines say suggestive and mature themes are welcome where rated but explicit sexual content and illegal content are not
. It is rated 18+ on the App Store. Lore, an interactive story app with an AI chat layer, says in its Google Play copy No graphic content
, though we found no matching sentence in its terms. The point carries across the section: read the policy, not the age label. Our page on interactive romance apps shows the same split among the choice apps.
Who says nothing, and why we write "not confirmed"
Two services publish terms that are silent on adult content. The records mark that as not confirmed, on purpose, because the absence of a ban is not a permission.
- NovelAI. Its Terms, effective December 8, 2025, require users to be 18 or older and contain no clause restricting adult content. No sentence says adult text is permitted. The only NSFW rule we found is on uploads to the public Explore gallery,
No NSFW.
, which governs what you share and not what you write privately. The home page markets its image generation withNo restrictions. No compromises.
- DreamGen. Its Terms, updated March 23, 2026, bar illegal content and sexual content involving minors, including fictional ones, and contain no other sexual-content ban. The About page says it was founded on people's freedom to entertain themselves
as long as it's done in private and no other person is actively involved, exposed, or harmed in the process
. That is a statement of belief, not a permission.
As general reasoning, silence can mean a service allows adult text and sees no need to say so, or it can mean a supplier, a store or a processor may limit it later. A reader cannot tell which from the page, and a record that said "allowed" would claim more than we know. Two smaller services are close to this position: Smuthie's listings show adult intent in the title without stating whether scenes are explicit, and the terms of Erotic Stories - Erotica say only that the operator may remove content that is unlawful, offensive, obscene or otherwise objectionable.
Why the rules follow the model supplier
The clearest evidence is a service that lets you choose the model. Sudowrite's documentation describes its own Muse model as having a content filter level of Virtually none
, handling graphic or mature themes that other AIs might refuse, and its OpenAI-based models as Strict, inheriting OpenAI's content moderation
and avoiding explicit sexual content. The same app, the same account and the same prompt can therefore give opposite answers, depending on which model you pick. Sudowrite's Terms also list any obscene or immoral purpose
among prohibited uses, a tension its marketing of adult writing leaves open.
NovelCrafter takes the logic to its end. It ships no model at all, so it connects you to a vendor or a local model, and its guide on writing NSFW content says that jumping straight into explicit requests often triggers refusals from most models and that NSFW is whatever a model or its provider has decided warrants moderation
. Its Terms bar only unlawful use.
For the reader services the position is murkier. AI Dungeon lists models, among them DeepSeek V4 Flash, GLM and Dynamic Large, without saying which Latitude runs itself. NovelAI's home page says its story generation is powered by GLM 4.6 and does not say who supplies it. Erota names Apprentice, Artisan and Master, DreamPress AI a standard model and premium models, and NovelX and Pirr name none. None of the pages we read says whether a supplier's own limits sit under the app's. Treat an app's yes as the app's yes. Whether the model underneath will follow it is a separate question that the pages do not answer.
Stores and payment processors
The third layer sits outside the app and shapes what a service can sell or show. Apple's guidelines ban overtly sexual or pornographic material as the point of an app, and Google Play does not allow apps that contain or promote sexual content, with an exception for catalogue apps where such titles are a minor fraction. This explains some of why services in this section run in a browser and not an app store; see browser interactive erotica. Our guide to why erotica apps disappear from the app store covers both stores.
Payment processors are the less visible layer. Stripe's list of prohibited businesses, last updated September 22, 2026, includes pornography and other mature audience content, literature among it, designed for the purpose of sexual gratification, and a separate entry covers AI-generated content meeting the same criteria. Mastercard's 2021 statement describes documented consent and age and identity verification for adult content merchants. We cannot see which processor each service uses, so we do not match any to these rules; payment processors and erotica explains how a processor's rules become a platform's.
What the rules say about people under 18
Every AI service we cover bars sexual content involving people under 18 except two where we found no published rule. AI Dungeon, DreamPress AI, Pirr and NovelX publish detailed rules. Erota, DreamGen and Sudowrite have one line in their terms. For NovelAI and NovelCrafter we found no rule in the pages we read, which describes the pages and not the service. AI Dungeon's guidelines add that a disclaimer such as All characters are 18+
does not help when the context implies otherwise. The AI stories hub has the full table, including which services print a sentence that all characters are adults: Erota, DreamPress AI and Pirr do.
The reverse rule: places that ban AI-written erotica
Some platforms restrict the other direction. Literotica says it publishes works by human for humans
, does not accept works generated by AI, and its Terms forbid using site content for AI. Everand's rule for uploaded content bars text and images generated by AI to an extent determined by the company. Neither is an AI story service, but a reader who wants AI-written work to appear on a human-written site should know the rule exists. See the Literotica review.
How to read a policy yourself
- Find the app's terms, content policy or guidelines, and search for the words adult, mature, sexual, explicit and NSFW.
- Note whether the page permits, bans, or says nothing. Do not treat silence as yes.
- Check whether the app says whose model it runs. If it does not, the model's own limits are unknown.
- Read the exclusions. A service that allows explicit content still bans themes, and the lists differ.
- Check what the setting is: always on, a level, or an opt-in, and where.
That is general advice. For two services' rules side by side, see AI Dungeon against NovelAI.
FAQ
Does AI Dungeon allow NSFW?
Yes, through the Mature level of its AI Safety Setting, which requires you to confirm you are 18+. Sexual content involving characters under 18 stays blocked, and the pages do not say whether the free tier can use Mature.
Does NovelAI allow NSFW?
Not confirmed. Its Terms require users to be 18 or older and contain no clause restricting adult content, but no sentence says adult text is permitted. The only NSFW rule we found governs uploads to its public Explore gallery.
Why does the same AI refuse in one app and not another?
Because the model has its own limits and the app adds rules on top. Sudowrite shows it inside one app: its Muse model has virtually no content filter, and its OpenAI-based models avoid explicit sexual content.
Is an 18+ AI story app always explicit?
No. StoryLoom is rated 18+ on the App Store and its policy says pornographic content is not permitted. Dorian, which is not an AI service, does the same.
Which AI story services ban explicit content?
StoryLoom among the AI services we cover. Sudowrite's OpenAI-based models avoid it too, though that is a model setting, not an app ban. Most of the others allow it in their own words, and NovelAI and DreamGen are not confirmed either way.
