Quick answer
- Who publishes it: 15 services. Twelve on a category page, genre row or tag list of their own, Kindle+ on Amazon's explainer text, and two (Literotica and Archive of Our Own) on counts we read but do not link.
- Small: the closest published measure of erotic-adjacent sci-fi is Audible's Romance sub-category for science fiction, 1,799 titles on October 27, 2026, about 3 per cent of its Romance count. Quinn shows 59 beside its sci-fi category, a number it does not label.
- Often combined: Literotica files it with fantasy as Sci-Fi & Fantasy (39.4k stories). Apple Books and OhCleo also pair the two, so there is often no sci-fi figure of its own.
- Free: ten services have some free reading or listening. Audible, Kindle+ and GoodNovel do not, and Quinn and Webnovel do not state it.
- Formats: audio on 8 services, interactive on 4, AI-written on 1.
What erotic sci-fi is, and how small it is
Erotic sci-fi sets sexual or romantic stories in speculative technology settings: space travel, aliens, androids and post-apocalyptic futures. The boundary is fuzzy because many services combine it with fantasy in a single category, and alien or monster romance can sit under paranormal, under sci-fi or under neither. Dedicated libraries are much smaller than for romance, and the genre has fewer services than fantasy (23) or paranormal (18).
Two ratios from the services' own figures show the scale. Audible's Romance category held 57,947 titles on October 27, 2026, and its Science Fiction sub-category inside Romance held 1,799, about 3 per cent. At Archive of Our Own the Romance tag listed 978,652 works and the Science Fiction tag 67,969, about a fourteenth, on the same date and across every rating. Neither figure measures explicit stories, and the two services count different things, but the direction is the same.
The figures, and what they count
| Service | Sci-fi figure (October 27, 2026) | What it counts |
|---|---|---|
| Audible | 56,569 in Science Fiction; 1,799 in Romance > Science Fiction | Audiobook titles in a general retail catalogue |
| Literotica | 39.4k in Sci-Fi & Fantasy | Stories in a combined category |
| Archive of Our Own | 67,969 under Science Fiction | Works under a free-form tag, all ratings |
| Quinn | 59 | A number beside its sci-fi category that the service does not label |
| OhCleo | Sci-Fi and Aliens tags inside Fantasy & Sci-Fi (467 for the whole category) | A number the service does not label |
| Chyoa, DreamPress AI, Dorian | None per genre | Chyoa has a sci-fi category, DreamPress AI a genre option, Dorian a "sci-fi romance" chip |
Where sci-fi hides: combined categories
Literotica has no separate sci-fi category. Its category index combines it with fantasy as Sci-Fi & Fantasy, with 39.4k stories on October 27, 2026, and it also carries a NonHuman category of 17.6k stories described as "Aliens, ghosts, androids, and more", which overlaps with sci-fi but is its own thing. We cite the figures and do not link to the categories. Apple Books pairs fantasy and sci-fi in one category, and OhCleo files Sci-Fi and Aliens tags inside Fantasy & Sci-Fi. For these three, a search for sci-fi returns fantasy as well.
Audible, Google Play Books, Smashwords and Quinn do split the two. Audible's Science Fiction sits under Science Fiction & Fantasy, and Romance has its own Science Fiction sub-category, which is the useful one for readers who want romance on a spaceship. Google Play Books has a Science fiction category of its own. Kindle+ is the weakest entry: Amazon's explainer lists science fiction among genres you can search, but the Kindle+ pages themselves have no genre category.
Mainstream shelves versus adult-first libraries
Audible, Google Play Books, Apple Books and Smashwords are general retailers, so their sci-fi shelves are the mainstream ones. Smashwords hides erotica until a registered user switches it on, and the policies of Apple and Google restrict sexually explicit books; the details are in our page on why erotica apps disappear from the App Store.
Among the adult-first services, Quinn and OhCleo are marketplaces for independent voice performers, so their sci-fi is what creators uploaded. Chyoa has a sci-fi category among the genres of its free, ad-supported library of branching adult fiction. Webnovel is the sci-fi-heavy reading app: its App Store text lists sci-fi, LitRPG and progression fantasy among its featured genres, and chapters unlock with coins, with packs on October 27, 2026 from 50 coins for $0.99 to 5,000 for $99.99. Its terms ban "indecent" and "pornographic" content without naming explicit text.
GoodNovel lists Sci-Fi in its genre list, and its terms bar sexually explicit description. Wattpad has Science Fiction in its genre row and allows explicit scenes only in stories rated Mature. Dorian is a platform of creator-made choice games with a "sci-fi romance" chip and no explicit sexual content under its guidelines. DreamPress AI lists sci-fi as a genre option for stories it generates.
Free and paid
Ten services let you read or listen without paying: Smashwords, Apple Books, Google Play Books, OhCleo, Wattpad, Chyoa, DreamPress AI, Dorian, Literotica and Archive of Our Own. Apple Books and Google Play Books are free apps with free samples and some free titles, and Chyoa lets you read most stories signed out. OhCleo gives a free account with three stories in full, and DreamPress AI gives 15 credits a day once your email is verified.
Three have no free tier. Audible is $8.99 a month after a 30-day trial, Kindle+ is $11.99 a month plus taxes in the US after its 30-day trial, and GoodNovel is not a free-to-read service. Quinn ($7.99 a month) and Webnovel do not state what is free on the pages we read.
Audio, interactive and AI versions
Audio is available on eight of the 15: Audible, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kindle+, Quinn, OhCleo, DreamPress AI and Literotica. Interactive versions exist on Chyoa, DreamPress AI, Dorian and Literotica's story games, and the only AI-written source is DreamPress AI. Our interactive erotica section and audio erotica section cover the formats generally.
Related genres
Erotic sci-fi is closest to adult fantasy, which shares its combined categories, and to the paranormal stories page for alien and monster romance. The general romance picture is on erotic romance, and the full list of genres is on the genres hub.
