Quick answer
- What it is: a label for erotica built on socially forbidden pairings or acts between adults, such as incest, age gaps between adults and dubious consent. It is a published category on some platforms and a banned one on others.
- Not a ranking: six services carry a taboo category, chip or tag. Every table on this page is in alphabetical order, and no order here means better or worse.
- The difference that matters: whether a service's rules bar sexual content involving people under 18. DreamPress AI, Literotica, NovelX, OhCleo and Smashwords publish such a rule, quoted below. Archive of Our Own's policy has no restriction on fictional content on age grounds.
- Policies disagree on the theme itself: Smashwords allows it under mandatory labels, OhCleo and DreamPress AI carry the category but restrict what is inside, NovelX and Wattpad ban the theme, and GoodNovel and Dreame ban explicit content altogether.
- Counts: Literotica's Taboo/Incest category showed 79.6k stories and Archive of Our Own's Taboo tag 3,741 works (every rating) on October 27, 2026.
What taboo fiction is, and what it is not
Taboo fiction is a label some adult story platforms use for erotica built on socially forbidden pairings or acts between adults: family relationships, age gaps between adults, and dubious consent. The line between taboo and ordinary kink is fuzzy, and every platform's list differs. It is not a legal category, a content rating or a shelf with a fixed meaning. Epictos, for instance, describes its "Forbidden & Taboo" trope as Age gap, secret relationships, and love that breaks every rule
, while Smashwords publishes a long list of themes it classifies as taboo and requires each to be labelled.
This site covers no content involving people under 18 and links to none. The services quoted below differ on exactly that point, and the difference is the most useful thing this page can show a reader. If you are choosing a platform, the age rule is worth reading before the theme rule.
Which services publish a taboo category
A service is here only because it publishes a category, chip, tag or classification for taboo fiction on its own pages or listings, and none is here on a guess. The kind of evidence differs, which the second column says.
| Service (alphabetical) | What it publishes | Its own figure, October 27, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Archive of Our Own | A Taboo tag. The archive has no genre categories, only free-form tags | 3,741 works, all ratings, not erotic only |
| DreamPress AI | A taboo chip in the generator's story form; not a shelf of existing stories | None |
| Epictos | "Forbidden & Taboo" among the romance tropes in its App Store text | None |
| Literotica | A Taboo/Incest category | 79.6k stories |
| OhCleo | A Taboo & Edge category on its category hub | None |
| Smashwords | A taboo erotica classification with mandatory labels; the Filtering tab is off by default, and a registered reader can choose "mainstream erotica only" or "mainstream plus taboo" | None |
We cite the Literotica and Archive of Our Own figures in prose and do not link to either site's category or tag pages. The archive's count covers every rating, so it includes works that are not erotic at all.
Group one: services that publish a rule barring sexual content involving people under 18
Five services state such a rule in their own words: the services above that publish a taboo category with a policy to quote, plus NovelX. A published rule is not an audit, and we have not read the catalogues, but it is the clearest written position a service can take. They are in alphabetical order. Other services in the table further down, Wattpad among them, bar sexual content involving people under 18 in their guidelines too.
- DreamPress AI, content policy:
All characters must be over the age of 18.
The same policy bans non-consensual acts and'Consensual non consent'
. Its Terms and Policies page was last updated August 13, 2026. - Literotica, footer on every page:
Characters in all stories are over 18.
Its Content Guidelines listSexual activity involving characters under the age of 18
as content it does not publish, addingLiterotica has always had a strict policy against any under-18 content
. - NovelX, which has no taboo category and appears here only for its policy: its FAQ lists
Content involving characters who are minors (under 18 years old)
as strictly prohibited, and its Acceptable Use Policy says it will report any content that exploits or abuses people under 18. - OhCleo, FAQ: its list of strictly prohibited content includes
Minors or underage themes
, andCreators may only upload consensual adult fictional audio content
. That is a rule for uploaders, which is not quite the same as a statement that every character is an adult. - Smashwords, Erotica Content Guidelines, March 10, 2026:
Smashwords has a zero-tolerance policy for underage erotica (characters under age 18)
andUnderage erotica is strictly forbidden
. The same page saysAll taboo erotica is clearly labeled so readers can make an informed choice.
The wording differs in what it covers. Literotica and DreamPress AI state a rule about characters, and Literotica prints it on every page. OhCleo's rule is a creator rule. Smashwords' is a rule for erotica as a class of book. In effect each says that sexual content involving people under 18 is not permitted.
Group two: services whose policy does not restrict fictional content on age grounds
Archive of Our Own is the service in this group. This section is a statement of what its policy does and does not cover. It is not a warning about the archive and not a recommendation of it.
Its Content Policy opens with its goal: Our goal is maximum inclusiveness of fanwork content.
Section II.A adds: Unless it violates some other policy, we will not remove Content for offensiveness.
The one age-related restriction, section II.K, bars sexually explicit or suggestive photographic or photorealistic images of real children
. That addresses imagery of real people under 18. The policy has no restriction on fictional content on age grounds, so a fictional work is judged by the same rules as any other, and creators set the rating and warnings. A work may be left unrated, and works rated Mature or Explicit, or unrated, show a warning screen with a Proceed button, which is a notice and not an age check.
The Terms bar accounts for people under 13, so accounts are open from 13, and from 16 where local law requires consent to process personal data. Our Archive of Our Own review is a facts page on the same policy. The wording above is as recorded on October 27, 2026, because the archive's pages did not load when we tried to re-read them on October 28.
Placed in neither group
Epictos is an iPhone reader that lists "Forbidden & Taboo" among its tropes. Its App Store rating is 18+, but we found no statement about character ages on the pages we read, and its policy page could not be read because of an invalid certificate. We place it in neither group and say nothing more about it.
Allow, restrict or ban: what the rules say about the theme
Separate from the age rule is the question of whether a service accepts the theme at all. The policies disagree with each other and sometimes with their own libraries, which is the finding. The services that publish no taboo category but state a position are included, because a reader choosing a platform needs them.
| Service (alphabetical) | Position on taboo themes | In its own words or by its rules |
|---|---|---|
| Dreame | Bans explicit content altogether | The terms bar content that is "sexually explicit or pornographic" |
| DreamPress AI | Carries the option, restricts what is inside | Non-consensual acts and "Consensual non consent" are not permitted |
| GoodNovel | Bans explicit content altogether | The terms bar sexually explicit description and pornography |
| Literotica | Carries a category, restricts what is inside | Bars non-consent fantasies in which the "victim" receives no thrill or is seriously and permanently harmed |
| NovelX | Bans the theme in policy; the library still carries the tags | Content that promotes incest and any non-consensual sexual act is strictly prohibited; on October 27, 2026 the library listed an Incest tag with 13 stories and a Dubcon tag with 36+ |
| OhCleo | Carries a category, bars the theme inside it | The FAQ lists incest and non-consensual content as strictly prohibited and bars them in fiction |
| Smashwords | Allows under mandatory labels | Dubious consent and incest or pseudo-incest are carried if labelled; rape or sexual slavery as the predominant theme is discouraged |
| Wattpad | Bans the theme | The Content Guidelines list incest among banned sexual content; explicit scenes are allowed only in Mature stories |
OhCleo is the plainest example of the tension. Its category hub carries Taboo & Edge, yet its FAQ lists Non-consensual or coercive scenarios
and Incest or family-roleplay themes
among themes not allowed even in fictional contexts. NovelX is the plainest example of a gap between policy and library: the policy and the FAQ ban incest and non-consensual acts, and its public library, which its users generate, listed tags for both. Neither is an accusation. A policy states what the service intends, and a tag count shows what was there on the day we looked.
What to check before you read
A reader can use the above in three steps. First, look for the age rule in the service's own words, and note whether it is a rule for characters, for uploaders or for a class of book. Second, look for the rule on the theme: the same story can be a category on one service and a ban on the next. Third, find out whether the service labels the theme or lets you filter it. Smashwords does both and has the filter off by default, and Archive of Our Own leaves ratings and warnings to the creator.
Our glossary entry on content warnings explains why a label is a weaker signal than a rule, and platforms that ban erotica covers the services that refuse the whole category. Neither this page nor those is a guide to finding any particular content.
Free, audio, interactive and AI
Five of the six have some free reading or listening: Smashwords (free ebooks and open browsing), OhCleo (a free account with three stories in full), DreamPress AI (daily credits), Literotica and Archive of Our Own. Epictos does not state a free tier and sells iPhone subscriptions. Audio exists on OhCleo, DreamPress AI and Literotica, interactive stories on DreamPress AI and Literotica's story games, and AI-written stories on DreamPress AI. The same rules apply to those formats, and Literotica says its story games follow the same content rules as the rest of the site.
Related genres
Taboo themes overlap most with dark romance, where coercion and power imbalance are part of the genre, and with erotic romance, which has the wider picture of what each service's explicit-text rules allow. The rest are on the genres hub.
FAQ
What is taboo erotica?
A label for erotica built on socially forbidden pairings or acts between adults, such as incest, age gaps between adults and dubious consent. Platforms define it by their own lists, and it is a published category on some and banned on others.
Which platforms have a taboo category?
In our research, Smashwords, OhCleo and Literotica publish a taboo category or classification, Epictos names it in store text, DreamPress AI has a chip in its story form and Archive of Our Own has a Taboo tag. That is six services, in alphabetical order on this page and not ranked.
Which services publish a rule against sexual content involving people under 18?
DreamPress AI, Literotica, NovelX, OhCleo and Smashwords all do, and each rule is quoted above. Literotica prints a sentence on every page, and Smashwords calls it a zero-tolerance policy.
Does Archive of Our Own restrict fiction on age grounds?
Its Content Policy has no restriction on fictional content on age grounds. Its age-related restriction covers photographic or photorealistic images of real people under 18. This describes what the policy covers and does not cover, and it is not a verdict on the archive.
Does Wattpad allow taboo themes?
Its Content Guidelines list incest among banned sexual content, and they allow explicit scenes between consenting adults only in stories rated Mature. The guidelines were last revised August 10, 2026.
Does Smashwords carry taboo erotica?
Yes, with labels. Taboo erotica must be labelled, and erotica of any kind is hidden until a registered user switches Filtering on, with the choice of "mainstream erotica only" or "mainstream plus taboo".
Does NovelX allow incest?
Its policy bans content that promotes incest and any non-consensual sexual act. Its public library, which users generate, still listed an Incest tag on October 27, 2026, so policy and library do not match.
