What paranormal means, and why it will not stay put
Paranormal stories put supernatural beings at the heart of a romance or erotic story: werewolves, vampires, witches, shifters, ghosts and demons. The boundary with fantasy is fuzzy, because services split the same creatures differently, with werewolves and vampires under Paranormal and fae and dragons under Fantasy, or everything under one label. Alien and monster romance can sit under paranormal, under sci-fi or under neither.
Many apps have no category with this name at all. They use creature tags or the word "supernatural" instead, which is why the rest of this page is organised by what each service calls the shelf.

When the shelf has another name
Literotica has no category called paranormal. The nearest it publishes are NonHuman, described on its category index as "Aliens, ghosts, androids, and more", which showed 17.6k stories on October 27, 2026, and Erotic Horror, which showed 6.3k. We call them the nearest, not paranormal categories: NonHuman takes in aliens and androids as well as ghosts, so it overlaps with sci-fi. We cite the figures and do not link to either category.
Quinn goes the other way and splits the genre into creatures, with unlabelled numbers beside vampire (76), werewolf (25) and monsters (48), so there is no single paranormal figure to quote. OhCleo files paranormal tags inside its Fantasy & Sci-Fi category, which is why its count appears on the fantasy page and not here.
Audible and Smashwords show how a retailer handles the same problem. Audible has Paranormal only as a sub-category of Romance, with 9,512 titles on its page header on October 27, 2026, seen from an EU address and counting every paranormal romance audiobook rather than erotic ones. Smashwords has it only as a sub-category, filed under Romance, Fantasy and Historical at once. Archive of Our Own's Paranormal tag listed 49,507 works on the same date, across all ratings and as a free-form tag, which we state as a fact and not a recommendation.
Creature romance in the reading apps
The apps that sell creature stories describe themselves in store text, so their evidence is marketing and not a shelf. Velvet Novel is an iPhone reader that calls itself a premium dark fantasy app and lists vampire romance, werewolf and alpha stories, witch covens, fated mates and paranormal suspense. It needs a recent iOS, carries a 16+ App Store rating, prints no price list, and says some stories contain mature themes without calling itself erotica. Epictos, also iPhone only, lists "Werewolf & Paranormal" among its tropes and claims 500+ novels. Roma names werewolf and shifter stories as a collection and has free preview chapters before coins.
Werewolf stories are the biggest creature on these shelves and now have a page of their own: werewolf romance apps and sites sets out the ten services that publish the label and what each one's rules say. The larger web novel services carry werewolf shelves too. Dreame lists werewolf and true-mate stories among its popular genres, GoodNovel has Werewolf and Paranormal in its genre list, and Wattpad has both in its genre row. Their rules on explicit text differ, and the romance page sets them out: Dreame and GoodNovel bar sexually explicit content, and Wattpad allows explicit scenes only in stories rated Mature. Scripts is a choice-based app that lists paranormal among its genres, with a $14.99 monthly Romance Pass, and Dorian is a platform of creator-made choice games where supernatural and horror romance are genre chips and explicit sexual content is not allowed.
What the rules say about non-human characters
A creature tag does not mean the service accepts explicit stories about that creature, and the rules differ more here than on most pages. Literotica's Content Guidelines bar bestiality with real animals but state that fantasy characters, monsters, furries and anthro characters are allowed. DreamPress AI's content policy goes the other way on one point: All non-human characters must be anthropomorphised and be able to give consent.
NovelX's FAQ lists sexualised non-humanoid entities among its strictly prohibited content.
OhCleo is the strictest we read. Its FAQ lists, among themes not allowed even in fictional or fantasy contexts, Explicit sexual content involving non-human creatures, monsters, animals
and a related breeding fetish theme. We read that line on October 28, 2026, and it applies to the same service whose category hub carries the Fantasy & Sci-Fi tags. So the same monster story could be allowed at Literotica and refused at OhCleo. Check the rules of the service, not the tag.
Free and paid
Nine of the 18 have some free reading or listening. Smashwords has free ebooks and open browsing, and Wattpad is free with ads. OhCleo gives a free account with three stories in full, and DreamPress AI grants 15 credits a day. Roma gives free preview chapters, Satinaire is free to start with ads between chapters, and Dorian is free to play with hearts bought to support creators. Literotica and Archive of Our Own are free throughout. Four have no free tier: Audible ($8.99 a month after a 30-day trial), Dreame, GoodNovel and Dipsea ($12.99 a month, or $69.99 a year with a 7-day trial). Five do not state it on the pages we read: Quinn, Spicify, Epictos, Velvet Novel and Scripts.
Audio, interactive and AI versions
Audio is the strongest format for this genre: Audible, Quinn, OhCleo, Dipsea, DreamPress AI, Spicify, Satinaire and Literotica all have it. Quinn is the only audio service in this set that splits the genre by creature, though its numbers are unlabelled. Interactive versions exist on DreamPress AI, Scripts, Dorian and Literotica's story games. Two services write the stories with AI, DreamPress AI and Satinaire. The audio erotica section compares the audio services, and the AI erotica section covers the generators.
Related genres
Paranormal sits closest to adult fantasy, with which it shares most of its services, and to erotic romance. Where the supernatural romance turns menacing, see dark romance. Aliens and androids move across to erotic sci-fi. The full list is on the genres hub.
