Quick answer
- No category: we found no retail store or library with a dark romance category. The label appears as a tag, a genre chip, a section of a store description or the name of an app.
- Who uses it: nine services. Five show it as a tag, genre list or genre chip on their own sites, three in store-listing text, and Archive of Our Own as a tag with 13,260 works on October 27, 2026 (every rating).
- Rules differ sharply: GoodNovel bars sexually explicit content in its terms while its home page shows a Dark Romance tag. DreamPress AI and NovelX ban non-consensual sexual acts. For Epictos, Satinaire, Roma and Dorian we found no rule on coercion.
- Free: DreamPress AI, Roma, Satinaire, Dorian and Archive of Our Own have some free reading. GoodNovel does not, and three more do not state it.
- Formats: audio on 4 of the nine, interactive stories on 2, AI-written stories on 3.
What dark romance is, and why it is not a shelf
Dark romance is romance built on menace, obsession or coercion rather than gentleness: possessive or criminal love interests such as mafia heroes, captors and stalkers, steep power imbalances, and sometimes violence, abuse or dubious consent on the page. It is closer to a mood than a shelf. A single label covers a morally grey hero with an ordinary, consensual love story and fiction that depicts non-consent, and the name does not say which you are getting.
That is why no retail store files it. Where the four stores we could read split romance at all, they split it by setting or creature (Audible has Historical and Paranormal under Romance, and Smashwords has Billionaires), not by how dark the relationship is. In the services we read, the label turns up as a tag, a genre chip or an app name, and the only guard against surprise is a written warning. Our glossary entry on content warnings explains why a tag is a weaker signal than a written warning.
The boundaries are loose in both directions. Dark fantasy overlaps with it, which is why our fantasy page has services in common with this one. Mafia and billionaire stories overlap with it, and so do taboo themes, which the taboo fiction page handles as a question of policy.
Where the label appears
The table lists the nine services and what each one says about coercion or non-consent, because that is the rule that matters most for this genre. "Not found" means we looked on the pages we read and saw no rule, which is a statement about the pages and not about the stories.
| Service | How dark romance appears | Rule on coercion or non-consent |
|---|---|---|
| GoodNovel | Dark Romance tag on the book listings of its home page | Not found; the terms bar sexually explicit description and pornography |
| DreamPress AI | Recorded on its own pages | Non-consensual sexual acts and sexual violence are banned, and "Consensual non consent" is not permitted |
| NovelX | Recorded on its own pages | Any non-consensual sexual act is strictly prohibited, including portrayals of slavery or rape |
| Spicify | Named in its App Store title, "Dark Romance Stories" | Not found; the pages say adults only and "All content is fictional" |
| Epictos | Named in its App Store title, listed first among its romance tropes | Not found; the policy page could not be read |
| Roma | A "Mafia Romance & Dark Romance" section in its Google Play text | Not found |
| Satinaire | First item in the genre list on its website | Not found; users may not submit content that depicts people under 18 in sexual or romantic contexts |
| Dorian | A genre chip on its creators page | Not found; the guidelines exclude explicit sexual content and require content warnings |
| Archive of Our Own | Dark Romance tag, 13,260 works on October 27, 2026 (all ratings) | Works of every rating are allowed; creators choose ratings and warnings |
Names are not categories
Three of the nine take their evidence from the way an app describes itself. Spicify's App Store title is "Spicify - Dark Romance Stories", and its text lists mafia romance, billionaire, reverse harem and forbidden love among popular genres. Epictos carries the label in its title as well, "Epictos: Dark Romance Novels", and puts alpha male and dark romance first among its romance tropes. Roma lists dark romance as a section and among its popular categories. Each is a store listing, so each is the service's own marketing, and the library sizes in them (Epictos claims 500+ novels, Spicify 100+ titles) are vendor claims.
The same caution cuts the other way. Velvet Novel has "Dark Romance" in its store title, but its text describes a dark fantasy library of vampire, werewolf and gothic stories and names no dark romance genre, so we do not count it here. A title that says dark romance is not evidence that the library has a section for it.
Where the label meets the rules
GoodNovel shows why the rules matter. Its home page carries a Dark Romance tag, yet its terms say user content must not involve "sexually explicit description, cover and graphic, etc. (including any pornography)". The genre is available there, and the explicit text is not.
The AI generators go the other way on consent. DreamPress AI's content policy says You must not create content that encourages, excuses or contains non-consensual sexual acts or sexual violence
, and adds that 'Consensual non consent' is not permitted.
NovelX's FAQ lists non-consensual sexual acts, including portrayals of slavery or rape, as strictly prohibited. NovelX also shows a gap between its policy and its library: its public library listed a Dubcon tag with 36+ stories on October 27, 2026, according to our research record. A policy is a statement of intent, and a tag count shows what is there.
For comparison, Smashwords has no dark romance category and so is not in the table, but it carries dubious-consent fiction on condition that it is labelled. That is a third approach: allow it, require the label, and let the reader filter. For the rest, Epictos, Satinaire, Roma and Dorian, no rule on coercion appears on the pages we read. Dorian bars explicit sexual content outright, and asks every project to declare a content rating and content warnings.
The two big free libraries
Literotica has no category called dark romance. Its category hub lists Reluctance/NonConsent, which showed 46.2k stories on October 27, 2026, and Erotic Horror, which showed 6.3k. They overlap with dark romance but are different genres, and Literotica's Content Guidelines bar non-consent fantasies in which the "victim" gets no thrill or is seriously harmed. We cite the figures here and do not link to the categories.
Archive of Our Own's Dark Romance tag listed 13,260 works on the same date. It is a free-form tag, not a category, and the count covers every rating, so it includes works that are not erotic at all. We state it as a fact about where a large free library sits and not as a recommendation. The archive's Content Policy allows works at every rating, and its age-related restriction (section II.K) covers sexually explicit or suggestive photographic or photorealistic images of real children
, and the policy has no restriction on fictional content on age grounds.
Free and paid
Five of the nine have some free reading. DreamPress AI grants 15 credits a day once your email is verified. Roma offers free preview chapters before premium chapters unlock with tokens, and Satinaire is free to start with ads between chapters. Dorian is free to play, with sapphires earned in-game and hearts bought to support creators, who set their own choice prices. Archive of Our Own is free and carries no ads. GoodNovel is not a free-to-read service: first chapters are free and later ones cost coins, and we cannot turn that into a per-chapter price because the coin cost of a chapter is not published.
The other three do not state a usable free tier. Epictos is an iPhone app, with a monthly subscription of $5.99 and a yearly one of $39.99 on the App Store; the listing says it is ad-free and describes no free tier. Spicify's own pages disagree, with one saying the first chapter of every story is free and another that all books are free to read with ads. NovelX has a $0 plan of 10 generation tokens, and the page does not say what a token buys.
Audio, interactive and AI versions
Audio exists on four of the nine: DreamPress AI, NovelX, Spicify and Satinaire. Spicify sells original dark romance as multi-voice audiobooks, and its terms permit AI-assisted narration. Satinaire's audio is AI-narrated. Interactive versions exist on DreamPress AI, which offers choose-your-path choices, and on Dorian, a platform of creator-made branching romance games with a claimed 11,000+ games. Three services write with AI: DreamPress AI, NovelX and Satinaire. For the audio side generally, see audio erotica, and for the choice-based side, interactive erotica.
Related genres
Dark romance sits beside erotic romance in general, billionaire romance for the wealthy-and-powerful hero, and paranormal for the creature-led version. The parent page, erotica genres, shows how the eleven pages relate.
FAQ
Is there a dark romance category on Audible or other stores?
Not on any store we read. Where Audible and Smashwords split romance, they split it by setting or creature, not by how dark the relationship is. Dark romance appears as a tag, a genre chip or an app name.
What counts as dark romance?
Romance built on menace, obsession or coercion: possessive or criminal love interests, steep power imbalances, and sometimes violence, abuse or dubious consent. It covers everything from consensual stories with a morally grey hero to fiction that depicts non-consent.
Do dark romance apps allow explicit content?
It varies. GoodNovel and Dorian bar explicit sexual content in their rules. DreamPress AI and NovelX allow explicit content between adults but ban non-consensual acts. For Spicify, Epictos and Roma, the pages we read do not say.
Are there dark romance audiobooks?
Spicify sells its originals as multi-voice audiobooks, and DreamPress AI, NovelX and Satinaire offer audio. Spicify's terms allow AI-assisted narration, and Satinaire's audio is AI-narrated.
Where can I read dark romance for free?
DreamPress AI, Roma, Satinaire and Dorian have some free reading, and Archive of Our Own is free throughout. Free here means a free part of a library, and coins or subscriptions apply after that.
How do I avoid themes I do not want?
Read the service's written rules and content warnings before the tag. Dorian asks every project to declare a content rating and warnings, and Smashwords requires labels on dubious-consent fiction. Archive of Our Own lets creators choose their own warnings, including none.
