Quick answer
- Price: free. Reading, audio and story games cost nothing, and membership is optional and free. We found no paid reading tier.
- Library: the About page claims 500,000+ stories, 100,000 authors and 2.5 million registered members. Those are company figures, not a count we made.
- Where: a web browser. We found no iPhone app and no Play Store listing on October 27, 2026, and the only Android download is an old APK on the site's own Android page. Audio plays in an ordinary mobile browser.
- Age: adults only. The terms set 18, or the age of consent where it is higher, and no document is checked. The footer says
Characters in all stories are over 18.
- Not published: any sexual activity involving characters under 18, AI-generated works and photographs of real people in explicit conduct, among other limits listed below.
What Is Literotica?
Literotica is a free community site for adult fiction. Its home page describes it as "a free, friendly, sex-positive, and open-minded place for adults to explore erotic fantasies via sex stories, audio erotica, and interactive fiction", and the footer carries the copyright years 1996 to 2026. The Privacy Notice (section 16) names Literotica, also known as Lit Online, as the owner and operator, with its principal place of business in Delaware.
Stories written by members are the core of it. Beside them the site carries audio, interactive "story games", poetry and comics. The cams, video-on-demand, toy shop and personals that appear around the site are not part of the reading product: its 2257 page says they "are all managed and hosted by third parties".
Literotica review: who it suits
Going by what the site and its policies say, Literotica suits a reader who wants free written stories in a browser, with no sign-up and no payment, and who is content to browse what members have published instead of a curated catalogue. It also covers audio and choose-your-path stories without charging for either.
It is a weaker fit in four cases. If you want an app, there is none. If you want to read offline, we found a read-later list but no offline mode. If you want produced audio with named narrators, the pages we read do not say who narrates. If you want to buy single titles, nothing in the reading product is for sale. Our guide to finding free erotica shows where else the free options sit.
How the stories are organised, and the rule that covers all of them
Stories are filed under roughly thirty categories chosen by the author, which the site groups by theme: couples and group scenarios, BDSM and fetish, LGBT themes, romance, humor, sci-fi and fantasy, horror, novels and chain stories, fan fiction, audio, reviews and essays, and poetry. Taboo and non-consent fantasy are themed groups among them, filed under the same adult-only rules. We name the groups once, as a fact about how the site is laid out, and we do not link to any of them.
The rule that applies to every group is printed in the footer of each page: Characters in all stories are over 18.
The Content Guidelines back it with a ban on any sexual activity involving characters under 18, and the Interactive Stories FAQ says story games follow "the same content rules (all characters must be 18+, etc.)". Of the reading platforms and stores covered alongside it (Kindle+, Everand, Smashwords, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Archive of Our Own, Wattpad, Tapas, FanFiction.Net and FictionPress), Literotica is the only one that publishes a sentence like this. For each of the others we record that we looked for one and did not find it.
A footer is a published rule, not an audit. We have not read the catalogue. What the site does say is that it "has always had a strict policy against any under-18 content", and that attempts to violate it are grounds for account termination.
What is in the library
The About page claims more than 500,000 stories, 100,000 authors, two and a half million registered members and 50 million visitors a month. They are the company's figures, not measurements. The home page language selector shows "English (904,200)" with no label saying what is being counted, so we do not treat that number as a story count. The pages we read do not publish story lengths. The home page banner reads "Read new sexy stories daily", which is wording, not a measured rate of publication.
Audio and story games
Audio is a full category with its own FAQ, and it plays in an ordinary browser on iPhone, Android and desktop, so no app is needed to listen. The pages we read do not name the narrators. Our page on erotica apps with audio lists services that say more about theirs.
The interactive side is called Story Games. The FAQ describes them as adult stories where "the reader can choose their own path through the story", and says a single story may have hundreds or thousands of possible narratives. The same content rules apply as on the rest of the site. For services built around branching, see interactive stories.
Is Literotica free?
Yes. Reading, audio and story games are free, and no account is needed to read. The home page says members, which is optional and free, "get access to extra features including erotic story publishing". We found no paid reading tier, no coins or credits, and no trial, because there is nothing to trial.
| Plan | Price | Billed | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reading, audio and story games | Free | month | Free. Membership is optional and free. Cams, video-on-demand, toy shop and personals are third-party add-ons, not part of the reading product. |
Checked October 27, 2026. Source: literotica.com. Prices change with region, promotions and the store you buy through.
The single free row is the whole price list. The cams, video-on-demand, toy shop and personals mentioned above are run by third parties, so we do not treat them as part of the reading product and record nothing about what they charge.
What Literotica will not publish
The Content Guidelines list what cannot be published, even by an adult for adults. In summary, the site does not accept:
- any sexual activity involving characters under 18, in any form, including sexual discussion and fantasising, or material that supports or defends the abuse or exploitation of people under 18;
- fan fiction in which characters are
artificially aged
; - bestiality with real animals (fantasy characters, monsters, furries and anthro characters are allowed);
- sexualised death;
- non-consent fantasies in which the "victim" gets no thrill or is seriously and permanently harmed, and non-consent or dubious-consent fiction about real people, groups or copyrighted characters;
- hate, intolerance or violence towards a group;
- promotion of real prostitution or sex work, and works claimed to be true about real people;
- works generated by AI or large language models: the site says it "publishes works by human for humans";
- teasers, excerpts and promotion for other platforms;
- photographs or video of real people in actual sexually explicit conduct, and images with explicit nudity.
The last item shows what the site is: a text site. The guidelines also say the community can have anything removed that it finds disruptive. The Terms (clause 16) forbid scraping the site or using its content for AI. The same rules cover the story games.
Web only, and no store app
| Where | Available | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone and iPad | No | No Literotica app in an iTunes search on 2026-10-27. |
| Android | An APK on its own site, not a Play Store listing | literotica.com/android offers an APK download from the site itself and tells users to allow installs from sources other than the Play Store. The page's copyright line reads 1998-2017 and it lists version 2.1. Read 2026-10-28; the file was not downloaded. Describe it as an APK on its own site, never as a store app. |
| Web browser | Yes | Web only. Audio plays in a normal browser on iPhone, Android and desktop. |
The About page says Literotica released one of the first adult Android apps, and that Google later changed its policy to prohibit all adult apps. No Literotica app appeared in an iTunes search or a Google Play search for the name on October 27, 2026. The site keeps an Android page of its own: when we read it on October 28 it offered an APK download from literotica.com and told users to allow installs from sources other than the Play Store. Its copyright line reads 1998-2017 and the version is given as 2.1, so we cannot say it is kept up, and we did not download it. Installing from outside the Play Store skips that store's review, so the browser version, which needs nothing installed, is the safer way to start. Our guide to why erotica apps disappear from the App Store sets out the rules behind that kind of removal.
On a phone you use the browser. A read-later list exists, but we found no offline mode.
For writers
Publishing is free for members. The Story Publishing Guidelines ask authors to be 18 or older, stories to run at least 750 words, the writer to be the sole creator and copyright owner, and the work to be human-written. Authors keep their copyright and grant a non-exclusive right to publish. Readers can leave feedback and follow authors, and authors get series, contests and basic Story Stats.
The site pays authors nothing directly. A BETA "Support This Author" button lets an author link to a page at Amazon, Smashwords or Patreon, and the FAQ says the money some popular authors make comes from linking out or from selling elsewhere. How other services handle this is in how erotica platforms pay writers, and the route for new writers is covered in how to publish erotica.
Privacy, billing and age
The Terms treat visiting as acceptance: "By visiting Literotica, you are agreeing to the following statements: 1. You are an adult, at least 18 years of age, and you have the legal right to possess adult material in your community." The site is "for use solely by responsible adults over the age of 18 (or the age of consent in the jurisdiction from which it is being accessed, whichever is greater)". No account, setting or document check is described, so the age check is a notice, not a gate. With no store listing there is no store rating to compare against the terms.
The Privacy Notice, dated 2 June 2025 in our records, is linked in the box above. Ads, a card descriptor and data collection were not part of what we recorded, and with no paid tier there is nothing to cancel or refund. For the wider picture, our page on how reading apps use your data covers what to look for.
Pros
- Reading, audio and story games are free, and no account is needed to read
- The footer states that characters in all stories are over 18
- A detailed Content Guidelines page that also covers audio and story games
- Works in any browser, including audio on iPhone and Android
Cons
- No iPhone or Android app, and no offline mode found
- Narrators and story lengths are not published
- No direct author payment; earnings depend on linking out to another service
- Library size is a company claim, and the one count on the home page is unlabelled
Best Literotica alternatives
Archive of Our Own is a free, ad-free archive of fan-made works organised by fandom, whose content policy permits works of every rating; our page on it is a facts page and recommends nothing. Smashwords is a store, not a free site, and keeps erotica hidden until a registered user switches it on. Wattpad allows explicit scenes only in stories rated Mature and bans pornography. For audio, our audio erotica section compares the paid services.
For a broader list, see Literotica alternatives. The head-to-heads are Archive of Our Own against Literotica, Literotica vs Wattpad and Chyoa vs Literotica, the last for readers who mainly want branching stories. The free erotica page ranks the options that cost nothing, and the platforms section lists the rest.
FAQ
Is Literotica free?
Yes. Reading, audio and story games are free, and membership is optional and free. We found no paid reading tier on the pages we read.
Do you need an account to read Literotica?
No. The home page calls membership optional and free. An account is needed to publish stories.
Does Literotica have an app?
Not in a store. No app appeared in an iTunes search or a Google Play search for the name on October 27, 2026, and the About page says an early Android app was affected by a change in Google's policy. The site's own Android page offers an APK, with a copyright line of 1998-2017, so we cannot say it is maintained, and we did not download it. The site works in a mobile browser, audio included.
Does Literotica say its characters are adults?
Yes. The footer of each page reads "Characters in all stories are over 18", and the Content Guidelines bar any sexual activity involving characters under 18. That is a published rule, and we have not audited the stories.
Does Literotica allow AI-written stories?
No. The Content Guidelines say works generated by AI or large language models are not published, and the Terms forbid using site content for AI.
Who owns Literotica?
The Privacy Notice says the site is owned and operated by Literotica, also known as Lit Online, registered in the USA with its principal place of business in Delaware.
Can you listen to Literotica?
Yes. Audio is a full category, and the Audio Works FAQ says it plays in a normal browser on iPhone, Android and desktop. The pages we read do not name narrators.
Final verdict
Literotica is a free, browser-only story site with plain written rules and a footer sentence about character age that none of the other ten services in our reading-platforms table publishes. It suits a reader who wants written stories, audio and story games without paying or signing up, and it is a poor fit for anyone who wants an app, offline reading or named narrators. We have not read the catalogue, so this rests on the home page, the terms and the content guidelines.
