Chyoa vs Literotica

Chyoa vs Literotica is a choice between steering a story and reading one. Chyoa is a free, ad-supported site where each chapter leads to several continuations and any registered user can write the next branch. Literotica is a free archive of finished stories with audio and a smaller set of choose-your-path Story Games. Both print a rule that characters are over 18.

Quick answer

  • Choose Chyoa if you want branching to be the whole product: every chapter leads to several continuations, some stories keep state in a Game Mode, and any registered user can add the next branch.
  • Choose Literotica if you want finished written stories, audio and a smaller set of Story Games on one free site, with no account needed to read. Its About page claims 500,000+ stories, which is the company's figure.
  • Cost: both are free. Chyoa is ad-supported, in its own words Want to support CHYOA? Disable your Ad Blocker!. Literotica's ads are not recorded.
  • Character age: both print a footer sentence. Chyoa: All characters in all stories on this site are over 18. Literotica: Characters in all stories are over 18. Each backs it with a written ban.
  • What Chyoa does not publish: an operator name, a separate terms page and a library size, none of which we found. Literotica names its operator and publishes Terms.

Both sites are free, run in a browser and are written by their users, so the difference is how a story is read. On Chyoa the reader picks a continuation at every chapter, and the story is a tree that many authors have grown. On Literotica a story is a finished piece to read, with an audio category beside it and a section of interactive Story Games. This Chyoa vs Literotica page compares what each publishes about cost, rules and tools, as checked in October 2026.

Also removable: anything the community finds disruptive.

"Not confirmed" means the pages we read do not say, which is different from "no". Three rows need a reading note. Both services show "yes" for interactive stories and branching choices, but the two answers are different sizes, which the next section explains. The row for the minimum age in a service's own terms reads 18 for Chyoa, taken from its entry gate because no terms page was found. And "Says all characters are adults" reads yes for both, from the footer sentences quoted above.

How much of each site is interactive

Chyoa describes itself as a collaborative adult-fiction site where each chapter can lead to several possible continuations, and its title reads "Interactive Sex Stories". The Guide names four extras beyond plain choices: "Customizable" stories that use reader variables, a "Game Mode" with state, items and conditional choices, a Story Map and polls. Because the tree is built by many authors, the number of endings belongs to each story. Chyoa publishes none, and we did not count any.

Literotica's interactive section is called Story Games. Its FAQ describes adult stories where "the reader can choose their own path through the story", and says a single story may have hundreds or thousands of possible narratives. The same content rules apply as on the rest of the site. The surrounding library is mostly static written stories, so the honest summary is that branching is Chyoa's product and one section of Literotica's. For what branching changes about reading, see interactive stories against static fiction, and for services built around it, branching choices.

Two written rules on character age

The rule on characters and the rule on the reader are separate, and both sites publish both. The table puts the character rules next to each other in the sites' own wording. Chyoa's comes from its Rules chapter; Literotica's from its Content Guidelines.

RuleChyoaLiterotica
Characters under 18Rule 1, No Underage Sex (minimum age is 18): It is not allowed to write about underage characters in an erotic context. The rule counts a character as under 18 by stated age, by physical or mental description, or by implication, and bans such images tooAny sexual activity involving characters under 18 is not published, in any form, including sexual discussion and fantasising. Fan fiction in which characters are artificially aged is not published either
Footer sentenceAll characters in all stories on this site are over 18.Characters in all stories are over 18.
Reader's ageAn entry screen with an "I am 18 or older" buttonVisiting counts as acceptance of the adult-only Terms; no gate
Other limitsNo bestiality, no excessive violence, no plagiarism, no spamA longer list, including bestiality with real animals (fantasy characters, monsters, furries and anthro are allowed), sexualised death, and some non-consent fiction
AI-written workNo AI story feature found; the site's rules do not mention itNot published: works generated by AI or large language models
Minimum story length250 words750 words

Chyoa's rule is the more specific about how a character's age is judged, since it covers description and implication and not only a stated number. Literotica's is wider in what it bars and also reaches discussion and fantasising. Both are published rules and not audits. Chyoa's catalogue is written by its users, Literotica's by its members, and we have not read either. The age gates differ too: Chyoa asks for a click on an entry screen, which is a self-declaration with no document check, while Literotica treats a visit as acceptance, and neither describes a document check. Literotica's Terms say the site is "for use solely by responsible adults over the age of 18 (or the age of consent in the jurisdiction from which it is being accessed, whichever is greater)". Our Chyoa review and Literotica review carry the rest of each rule set.

Cost, ads and funding

Chyoa's FAQ says You can read most visible stories and follow ordinary choices while signed out, and an account adds likes, comments, following, notifications, favorites, bookmarks and saved games. We found no paid tier, coins or paid chapters. The site is ad-supported and lists voluntary backers on a Supporters page. Its pages also carry ad slots for outside AI roleplay and girlfriend services; those are third-party links, not Chyoa's product.

Literotica is free for reading, audio and Story Games, and membership is optional and free. We found no paid reading tier, coins or trial. Whether the site shows ads was not recorded, so we do not say. The cams, video-on-demand, toy shop and personals around the site are run by third parties, per its 2257 page, and are not part of the reading product. For a wider look at the free options, our guide to free interactive erotica collects them.

What each one publishes about itself

Literotica names its operator ("Literotica, also known as Lit Online", with its principal place of business in Delaware), publishes Terms and a Privacy Notice dated 2 June 2025 in our records, and puts a size on its library: more than 500,000 stories, 100,000 authors and two and a half million registered members, by its About page. Those are company figures.

Chyoa names no operator on the pages we read. We found no separate terms-of-service page, because its policies sit in the Guide with the Rules, a DMCA policy and a policy under the TAKE IT DOWN Act. We found no privacy-policy address and no library size. That describes what Chyoa publishes and not what it does. A reader who cares about knowing who runs a site can see the difference at once.

Audio, apps and offline reading

Literotica has a full Audio category and an Audio Works FAQ saying it plays in a normal browser on iPhone, Android and desktop. We found no audio on Chyoa. Neither has a store app we could confirm. Literotica's About page says an early Android app was affected by Google's policy change, no Literotica app appeared in an iTunes or Google Play search on October 27, 2026, and the only Android download it offers is an APK on its own site, which we did not download. For Chyoa the same search found no listing, but a name search is not a source we can cite, so app availability stays unconfirmed either way. Offline reading is not confirmed for Chyoa, which remembers reading settings in the browser; Literotica has a read-later list and no offline mode that we found.

Writing on each

Chyoa is open: any registered user can start a story or add a chapter to a story that accepts contributions, review states exist, and a leaderboard lists "Awarded community writers". The minimum is 250 words and no payment programme was found. Literotica's publishing guidelines ask for authors aged 18 or over, stories of at least 750 words, a sole creator who owns the copyright, and human-written work. Authors keep their copyright and give a non-exclusive right to publish. It pays authors nothing directly; a BETA "Support This Author" button links to an author's page at Amazon, Smashwords or Patreon.

Which one should you pick?

  • Best for steering the story: Chyoa, where branching is the product and some stories have a Game Mode.
  • Best for writing a branch off someone else's chapter: Chyoa, which lets any registered user add one where a story accepts contributions.
  • Best for finished written stories with audio on the same site: Literotica.
  • Best for a taste of branching inside a written archive: Literotica, through its Story Games.
  • Best for reading with no account: Literotica, which states none is needed. Chyoa lets you read most visible stories signed out.
  • Best for a named operator and published Terms: Literotica.

The two are not rivals so much as neighbours, and many readers will use both. If you want other web options, browser interactive erotica lists them. For the other end of Literotica, see Archive of Our Own vs Literotica, and for wider choices Literotica alternatives. Every pair is in the comparisons section.

FAQ

Is Chyoa free?

Yes. We found no paid tier, coins or paid chapters. The site is ad-supported, and you can read most visible stories while signed out. An account adds likes, comments, following, bookmarks and saved games.

Does Chyoa have ads?

Yes. The site asks readers to disable their ad blocker to support it, and carries ad slots for outside AI roleplay and girlfriend services. Literotica's ads were not recorded.

Does Literotica have interactive stories?

Yes. Its Story Games let the reader choose their own path, and one story may have hundreds or thousands of possible narratives. They are a section of the site, while on Chyoa branching is the whole product.

What is Chyoa's rule on character age?

Rule 1 sets a minimum age of 18 for characters: It is not allowed to write about underage characters in an erotic context. The footer adds that all characters in all stories on the site are over 18. The rules cover description and implication as well as a stated age.

Who owns Chyoa?

The pages we read name no operator. We found no separate terms page or privacy-policy address either, so we cannot say who runs the site.

Do Chyoa and Literotica have apps?

Literotica has no store app; the About page says an early Android app was affected by Google's policy change, and its own site offers an old APK instead. For Chyoa we found no store listing by name search, which is not a source we can cite, so we leave it unconfirmed.
