Literotica vs Wattpad

These are different kinds of site. Literotica exists to publish adult fiction and describes itself on its home page as "a free, friendly, sex-positive, and open-minded place for adults to explore erotic fantasies". Wattpad is a social platform for web fiction and fan fiction, and adult material is a labelled sub-part of it, not the product. So the comparison turns on the rules each site publishes. The table sets out the fields both records carry, as checked in October 2026.

"Not confirmed" means the pages we read do not say, which is different from "no". Three rows need a reading note. The "Minimum age in its own terms" row reads 18 for Literotica and 13 for Wattpad. The "Explicit content" row for Wattpad is a conditional answer: it holds only in Mature stories, as the next section quotes. And "Says all characters are adults" is yes for Literotica and not confirmed for Wattpad, where we found no blanket sentence.

What each rule set says about explicit stories

Literotica's Terms describe the site's material as able to include graphic visual depictions and descriptions of nudity and sexual activity and say it may NOT be accessed by anyone who is younger than 18 years old. Its Content Guidelines then list what cannot be published even by an adult for adults. The main limits are any sexual activity involving characters under 18, fan fiction in which characters are artificially aged, bestiality with real animals, sexualised death, non-consent fantasies in which the "victim" gets no thrill or is seriously and permanently harmed, hate or violence towards a group, works generated by AI, and photographs or images with explicit nudity. The complete list is on our Literotica review.

Wattpad's Content Guidelines, last revised August 10, 2026, work by story rating. We quote the wording and do not compress it into a single rule:

• Mature (17+): may contain Explicit sexual content. Under Sexual Content the guidelines allow Explicit sexual scenes between consenting adults (18+ or as otherwise applicable under local, national or international laws) and Sexual content that supports the story, not the main purpose.
• Excluded: pornographic content created primarily for sexual arousal. The guidelines also list sexual roleplay, solicitation or messaging, glorified sexual exploitation, coercion or non-consensual acts, and illegal sex acts including bestiality, necrophilia and incest. Any sexual content involving people under 18 is out, with zero tolerance for child sexual exploitation material.
• Not a loophole: A mature rating is not an exception to our Content Guidelines.
• Region: age requirements for Mature content may vary by region.

The line Wattpad draws is not explicit against non-explicit. It is explicit scenes that serve a story, inside a Mature rating, against content whose main purpose is arousal. Where a given story falls is the site's judgement, and the guidelines are the only source we have. Literotica draws its lines differently, by the age of the characters and by categories of content, and the rules in our record contain no test of purpose. Our page on platforms that ban erotica sets both beside the platforms that draw the line elsewhere.

Age: one answer against five

Literotica gives one answer to the reader's age. Its Terms say the site is "for use solely by responsible adults over the age of 18 (or the age of consent in the jurisdiction from which it is being accessed, whichever is greater)", and visiting counts as acceptance, with no account, setting or document check. The footer on every page reads Characters in all stories are over 18.

Wattpad's documents and listings give five:

• the Terms of Service: "Wattpad Services are only for people 13 years old and over";
• the App Store listing: 16+, with the advisories "Frequent: Mature or Suggestive Themes" and "Infrequent: Sexual Content or Nudity";
• the Google Play listing: Teen, the store's 13+ tier;
• the Content Guidelines: the Mature rating is labelled 17+;
• the same guidelines: explicit scenes are for characters aged "18+ or as otherwise applicable".

Wattpad's age check is a self-declared age. Our record of the help article says Mature content is switched on through an "Include Mature" setting under Content Preferences, with a matching search filter; that article returned no text when we re-checked, so treat the detail as the record and not a fresh reading. We looked for a blanket statement that all characters are adults in the Content Guidelines, the Payment Policy, the Premium page and the App Store text and found none. The nearest wording is the Mature rule above. That describes the pages we read, not the stories.

Accounts, ads and free access

Literotica's reading, audio and Story Games are free, and membership is optional and free; an account is needed to publish. We found no paid reading tier, coins or trial. Whether it shows ads was not recorded. Wattpad is free to read with ads: the App Store lists the app as free with in-app purchases and "Contains Advertising", and Premium removes the ads. The Terms say "You can't browse very much on the Site or use the Services without registering for an account." So the practical gap is that Literotica asks nothing of a visitor and Wattpad asks for an account.

Literotica vs Wattpad on price

Literotica costs nothing for reading. Wattpad's prices are as follows, in US dollars. The web page figures are "From" prices billed in local currency, and the App Store prices are higher.

Premium removes ads, gives "Unlimited offline stories", adds bonus Coins on every Coin purchase and includes Premium Picks, a free monthly bundle of five Wattpad Originals. Premium+ adds 200 bonus Coins a month. On the App Store, twelve months of Premium at $5.99 would be $71.88, so the yearly $59.99 saves $11.89, and works out at about $5.00 a month. Coins unlock paid Wattpad Originals, and the Payment Policy says purchased Coins never expire while Bonus Coins do, 30 days after receipt. The Coin cost of a given story was not read, so we cannot turn Coins into a price per story. None of this applies to Literotica, which has no coins or credits.

Library, apps and features

Literotica's About page claims more than 500,000 stories, 100,000 authors and two and a half million registered members. Those are company figures, and the library is filed under author-chosen categories, covered once on our Literotica review. Wattpad publishes no story count; its store text speaks of "70 million monthly readers", a claim about readers and not about stories.

Wattpad runs on iPhone, Android (100M+ downloads on Google Play) and the web, and offline reading is a Premium perk, with the free-user limit not stated. Literotica is web only in practice. Its About page says it released one of the first adult Android apps and that Google later changed its policy to prohibit all adult apps, and no Literotica app appeared in an iTunes or Google Play search on October 27, 2026; its own Android page offers an APK whose copyright line reads 1998-2017, which we did not download. Our guide to why erotica apps disappear from the App Store covers the rule. Literotica also has audio, which plays in an ordinary browser, and the interactive Story Games. Audio and interactive stories are not confirmed for Wattpad.

On AI, Literotica says it "publishes works by human for humans" and does not accept works generated by AI. Wattpad's general AI-story policy is not confirmed; the one AI rule we found is that fiction about real people is removed if it involves non-consensual AI deepfakes. A last note for readers who search for it: Wattpad After Dark is no longer an app, according to our records. The old address redirects to a volunteer-run profile that is not a Wattpad service.

Writing and pay

Both are free to publish on. Literotica authors must be 18 or over and write at least 750 words, keep their copyright and give a non-exclusive right to publish; the site pays nothing directly, and a BETA "Support This Author" button links to a page at Amazon, Smashwords or Patreon. Wattpad's Terms say "You own all the rights to the content you create and post on the Wattpad Services", with a nonexclusive licence to Wattpad. Wattpad Originals are paid titles, but the Paid Stories Program help article needs a login, so revenue share and payout terms are not confirmed, and the "Ads on Wattpad" article says "there are currently no opportunities to make money from ads on your stories".

Which one should you pick?

• Best for a free site with no account and no store app: Literotica.
• Best for audio and choose-your-path stories on the same site: Literotica.
• Best for a published sentence on character age: Literotica, in its footer.
• Best for iPhone and Android apps: Wattpad.
• Best for offline downloads: Wattpad, as a Premium perk. Literotica has a read-later list and no offline mode that we found.
• Best for romance or sexual scenes inside a wider story on a mainstream platform: Wattpad, under its Mature rating and the rule quoted above.
• Best for readers who want the cheapest option: Literotica, at nothing. Wattpad is free with ads, and Premium is from $4.99 a month.

Both appear in wider lists too: Literotica alternatives and Wattpad alternatives. For the other free archives, see Archive of Our Own vs Literotica and Chyoa vs Literotica, and for Wattpad against another mainstream site, Tapas vs Wattpad. Every pair is in the comparisons section.
