Tapas vs Wattpad

Tapas and Wattpad are both free-to-read platforms where an adult reader might go looking for romance, and they handle sexual content in ways that sound similar and are not. We did not use either service. This page reads the content guidelines, payment policy, store listings and home pages, and quotes the rules exactly because the gap between them is the comparison. Tapas is built around webcomics and web novels; Wattpad is a social platform for web fiction and fan fiction.

"Not confirmed" means the pages we read are silent, not that the answer is no. The rest of the page takes the dimensions where the two differ, starting with the one that matters most.

Tapas vs Wattpad: the two policies, word for word

The first difference is what is being tested. Wattpad's test is about the main purpose of a work: explicit scenes are fine when they support a story, and content made primarily for arousal is not. Tapas' first sentence has no such qualifier: it bans any and all content intended for sexual gratification, with no allowance for scenes that serve a plot. Its second sentence does use a qualifier, saying a novel should not solely provide erotic satisfaction. How the two sentences fit together is not explained in the pages we read, so we do not claim that Tapas permits explicit scenes that carry a plot. What we can say is that Wattpad writes that permission down and Tapas does not.

The second difference is that Wattpad's allowance has a home. A Mature rating, labelled 17+, is where explicit scenes may sit, and the guidelines add that it does not suspend the other rules. Tapas has the word on the website and in its marketing, but not in the rules we read. Its guidelines are also older, dated 2022, and the creators site gives the reason it offers: Tapas is subject to following rules set by app stores and partners, which means we are unable to promote and host independent series containing mature content. Our guide to why erotica apps disappear from the app store sets out those store rules.

The Mature tab and the marketing

The tapas.io home page carries a row labelled Mature Versions Available with the line The spicier cuts? Only on our website!, and the web has a Mature tab. In a logged-out fetch of the static page the tab loaded without an age gate; scripted prompts were not tested. The pages we read do not say what the tab contains or where it draws its line, and we do not link to it. The apps are stricter than the web: the rules bar artwork with nudity or sexual acts on the apps, and the App Store lists the app as 16+ with content restrictions, naming Age Assurance among the in-app controls.

At Wattpad the gate is a setting. Our records say Mature content is switched on through an "Include Mature" toggle in content preferences, and Mature stories are not shown to under-age users, but that help article returned no text when we re-checked, so treat it as a record and not a fresh reading. The age check is a self-declared age.

Free reading and what costs money

Both are free to read. At Tapas, many series are free through "Wait Until Free": the Google Play text promises exclusive free episodes dropping every three hours and says Simply wait for your timer to run out, and you can read the next episode for free. Episodes can be unlocked early with Ink, the virtual currency, and the apps add Gift Passes, free Ink and weekly Fortune Cookies. The Ink pack prices and the Ink cost of an episode are not published on the pages we read, because the Ink page needs a sign-in, so there is no per-episode arithmetic here.

Wattpad is free with ads. Premium removes the ads and is From $4.99/month USD on the web page and $5.99 on the US App Store; Premium+ is $7.49 on the web and $9.99 on the App Store. Our arithmetic: the web Premium price is $59.88 over twelve months, the App Store monthly price $71.88, and the yearly App Store price of $59.99 saves $11.89 against twelve App Store months. There is a 7-day trial. Paid Wattpad Originals unlock with Coins: 9 for $0.99, 74 for $3.99 and 244 for $8.99 on the App Store, which is 11.0, 5.4 and 3.7 cents a Coin. Purchased Coins never expire, while Bonus Coins do, 30 days after receipt. The Coin cost of a given Original was not read. For the mechanics, see how story app credits work.

Neither service has a page of its own in our pricing section, so the figures above come from the two reviews and the policies. Offline reading is a Premium perk at Wattpad and is not confirmed for Tapas; our offline reading page lists the services that state it.

Library, formats and AI

Tapas describes thousands of premium comics and novels and more than 75,000 creators, naming romance, action, fantasy and BL as genres. Wattpad's store text speaks of a community of millions of readers and writers and 70 million monthly readers. All of these are claims; neither publishes a total number of stories. The formats differ: Tapas leads with comics and webtoons beside novels, Wattpad with web fiction and fan fiction. On AI, Tapas' guidelines say AI generated content is not allowed on Tapas. Wattpad's general AI-story policy is not confirmed; only non-consensual AI deepfakes of real people are addressed.

Age: the same four answers

• Terms: Tapas: You affirm that you are 13 years of age or older. Wattpad: Wattpad Services are only for people 13 years old and over.
• App Store: both 16+. Tapas adds content restrictions and Age Assurance; Wattpad's advisories are Mature or Suggestive Themes as frequent and Sexual Content or Nudity as infrequent.
• Google Play: both in the 13+ tier, whose own label is Teen.
• Mature label: Wattpad's Mature stories are labelled 17+, with explicit scenes limited to characters aged 18+ or as local law applies. Tapas defines no such label in the rules we read.

The age check at both is an affirmation or self-declaration, and we found no document check. We looked for a statement that all characters are adults in each platform's terms, guidelines and store listings and found none. Tapas bans the sexualisation of people under 18 and Wattpad bans any sexual content involving them; both are rules, not statements about every character. That describes the pages we read, not the catalogues.

For writers

Tapas posts for free and runs an Ad Revenue Program in which creators over 18 apply and Tapas takes a 30% fee, a Support Program in which the creator keeps 100% of a tip after third-party fees, and an Originals Program; PayPal is the only payout method and the minimum balance is $25. The same creators site says it cannot promote or host mature independent series. Wattpad says writers own the rights to what they post, gives a nonexclusive licence to publish, and says there are currently no opportunities to make money from ads on your stories; Paid Stories terms are not public. Which one should you pick?

If you want a site that is adult fiction throughout, not a Mature rating inside a social platform, see Literotica against Wattpad. A shortlist for Wattpad itself is Wattpad alternatives, and content warnings in erotica explains the tags that sit beside ratings. The reviews are our Tapas review and the Wattpad review, and more pairs are on the erotica app comparisons hub.
