Quick answer
- Who has it: 13 services in our records document offline reading: 4 apps and 9 platforms. A service not listed has published no answer, which is not a no.
- Two meanings: eleven keep downloads inside an app or account. Smashwords and Archive of Our Own offer plain files you can open in any e-reader.
- Five say no: Spicify (streaming only), femtasy (web app only), and the Chapters, Scripts and MeChat store texts, which describe online games that need a connection.
- Paid or free: Dipsea, Audible, Everand and Kindle+ have no free plan, and Epictos's listing describes none. Archive of Our Own, FanFiction.Net and Smashwords downloads are free.
- Limits: no record publishes a cap on downloads, except that Kindle+ lets you borrow 20 titles at a time. Whether an app contacts its servers while you read offline is not covered by any record.
Offline reading means downloading a story so you can read or hear it without a connection. The word hides a difference that matters to this reader: a download inside an app is tied to that app, that account and that subscription, while a plain file is yours to open anywhere. Our records list 13 services that document one or the other, and five that say they offer neither. This page is one of the erotica app features we track. For a walk-through of getting stories onto a phone, see how to read erotica offline.
What "offline reading" means, and what the records do not say
We define it as downloading stories so they can be read or heard without a connection, and without the app phoning home. The first half is documented. The second half is not: no record says whether an app contacts its servers while you read offline, what it stores on the device, or whether downloads expire. Our guide to how reading apps use your data covers what the policies do say.
The caveat that goes with the feature is that it is usually a paid-tier feature, and often limited to a number of downloads. The records bear out the first half for the subscription services and for Wattpad, and not for the free archives. They do not bear out the second half: apart from Kindle+'s limit of 20 borrowed titles at a time, no record publishes a cap on downloads.
How we grouped the 13
We grouped by who controls the copy once it is on your device, because that is what the records' wording allows us to tell apart. In the first group the download lives inside an app or an account. In the second it is a file. A service missing from both has not published an answer, which is not the same as no. The five that say no are in their own section below.
Downloads inside an app (11)
Every record here quotes the store listing or help text, not a test. We did not install any of them.
| Service | How its own text words it | Terms of access |
|---|---|---|
Google Play: Download your favorite stories to listen offline | Subscription only; no standing free plan | |
| App Store text, in Swedish: stream or download the stories for offline listening | Free ad-supported version and a Premium plan; whether the free version allows downloads is not stated | |
Offline Reading - Download your favorites and read anywhere | iPhone only; weekly, monthly and yearly subscriptions | |
App Store: Offline Reading; its site: Download chapters to your device and read them anywhere | Free preview chapters per book; premium chapters unlock with tokens | |
Download titles to listen offline | Subscription; 30-day trial | |
Read or listen across devices, even offline | Subscription; trial of 30 days on the website or 7 via the App Store | |
| Titles are downloaded to Kindle devices and the Kindle app | Subscription; you can borrow up to 20 titles at a time | |
download your Apple Books titles to your device for offline reading or listening | Free app; each title priced individually, with free titles | |
| The listing says titles can be downloaded to read offline | Free app; titles bought individually, with samples and some free titles | |
Premium page: Unlimited offline stories | A Premium perk; limits for free users are not stated | |
| The app syncs a library of downloaded stories between devices | Free; the site does not accept explicit content |
Four things follow from the table. Dipsea, Audible, Everand and Kindle+ have no free plan, and Epictos describes none, so you pay before you download; Audible and Everand offer a trial. Apple Books and Google Play Books tie downloads to purchase, with free samples. Roma, FanFiction.Net and Wattpad are the free-to-use apps where offline reading is documented, and in Wattpad's case unlimited offline is a Premium perk. And most of the large names here are general stores or libraries: only Dipsea, BLANCHEstories, Epictos and Roma are specifically adult, romance or erotica services. The rest carry erotica under their own content rules, which the records describe as unclear or restrictive for Apple Books, Google Play Books and Kindle+.
Plain files you keep (2)
Two services describe downloads as files instead of app features.
- Smashwords sells DRM-free ebooks. Its About page says
DRM-free ebooks means you can enjoy your book your way on any e-reading device or app
. Most books are paid per title and nearly 100,000 are priced at free; erotica is hidden by default and registered users switch on a filter to see it. - Archive of Our Own says
You can also download works to access offline with an e-reader or similar app.
It is free, hosts no ads, runs on donations and allows explicit work. It is web only.
A file you hold is portable and does not depend on an account staying open. The records say nothing on file formats.
Services that say no
The more useful half of the data may be the services that say outright they do not offer it. If you read on a train or a plane, these are the ones to rule out first.
| App | Offline reading | Web version | iPhone app | Android app |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No | Yes | Yes | Yes | |
| No | Yes | No | No | |
| No | Not confirmed | Yes | Yes | |
| No | Not confirmed | Yes | Yes | |
| No | Not confirmed | Yes | Yes |
Spicify's FAQ answers Can I listen offline?
with Not yet. Spicify is currently streaming-only to keep your stories private and secure.
femtasy's Help Center says it is a web app only, so offline listening is not possible; that article is dated 2022. Chapters, Scripts and MeChat use similar wording in their store text: an online game that requires an internet connection to play. My Stories says only that Sometimes internet connection is required
, which the record does not count as a yes or a no.
For most of the remaining services the pages we read say nothing. That includes Quinn, OhCleo, Bloom Stories and Literotica. Literotica has a read-later list, but no offline mode was found.
Free or paid access
Eight of the 13 are in the record's free column: BLANCHEstories, Roma, Apple Books, Archive of Our Own, FanFiction.Net, Google Play Books, Smashwords and Wattpad. The other five (Dipsea, Epictos, Audible, Everand and Kindle+) have no free plan confirmed. The free column describes the service, not the download, so it is worth reading case by case. Archive of Our Own, FanFiction.Net and Smashwords give you downloads at no charge. Apple Books and Google Play Books give them for titles you have bought or that are free. Wattpad reserves unlimited offline stories for Premium, from $4.99 a month on the web and $5.99 on the App Store. For a free route into erotica more broadly, see best free erotica apps.
Limits to know about
- Caps are not published. Kindle+ limits borrowed titles to 20 at a time, which is a lending limit, not a download limit. Nothing else gives a number.
- The first half of the definition is documented, the second is not. Nothing in the records says what an app stores or contacts offline.
- Cancelling. The records do not say what happens to downloads when a subscription ends. As general advice, assume that downloads in a subscription library depend on the subscription, and check the help page before you rely on them.
- Mostly general stores. Of the 13, only four are specific to adult or romance reading, and FanFiction.Net does not accept explicit content.
- Audio and text are different jobs. Dipsea and BLANCHEstories are audio services, while Epictos and Roma are text readers. Our page on audio erotica covers who offers audio at all.
Which service suits which reader
- Offline audio erotica: Dipsea or BLANCHEstories. Both are specialist services. Dipsea's store text mentions downloads without describing limits; BLANCHEstories' text is in Swedish.
- Offline romance novels in an app: Roma on iPhone or Android, or Epictos if you only use an iPhone. Epictos's listing also says it is ad-free.
- Files you keep: Smashwords for DRM-free ebooks, Archive of Our Own for fan fiction. Both are web only.
- You already pay for a library: Audible, Everand or Kindle+ already document downloads, though each carries erotica under its own rules.
- By device: iPhone readers should see best erotica apps for iPhone, and Android readers best erotica apps for Android.
