FanFiction.Net Review

Free archive

FanFiction.Net is a free, long-running fan fiction archive organised by fandom, with an official app. Readers often arrive looking for adult fan fiction and then meet its guidelines, which say it does not accept explicit content. This FanFiction.Net review quotes those rules, shows how they sit beside the app's store ratings, and says plainly what the pages we read do and do not establish.

Updated

Quick answer

  • Rules: the Guidelines say "Please note FanFiction does not accept explicit content, Fiction Rating: MA, and the rating is only presented for reference." Entry titles and summaries must be rated K. The guidelines version is dated 11-20-2008.
  • Enforcement: the same page says the site "does not filter content and is an open system that trusts the writer's judgement", and the Terms (section 7B) let it remove content such as pornography and obscene material.
  • Price: free to read, and the app is free. We found no paid tier and no payment to authors.
  • Age: the Terms say you must be over 13, the App Store lists 16+ with advisories for mature themes and sexual content, and Google Play lists Teen.
  • Where: web, plus an official iPhone and Android app published under the FictionPress Inc name, with text-to-speech and syncing.

What Is FanFiction.Net?

FanFiction.Net is a free fan fiction archive, and the home page is organised by fandom: Anime/Manga, Books, Cartoons, Comics, Games, Misc, Movies, Plays, TV and Crossovers. The store text claims "millions of stories", which is a claim and not a count. The Terms of Service, last updated on February 12, 2019, name the operator as FanFiction.Net under California law, while the app stores show FictionPress Inc as seller and developer. The sister site for original fiction is FictionPress.

Scripts get a bot challenge from fanfiction.net, so the guideline and Terms wording below is as recorded from a browser session on October 27, 2026. Our page on the sister site covers original fiction under almost identical rules.

Who this page is for

This is an explainer for a reader who searched for adult fan fiction and landed here. It is not a recommendation. It suits someone who wants to know whether the site allows explicit stories and what the app is. The short answer is that the guidelines say it does not accept explicit content. For a reader who wants explicit fan fiction, the rules below mean this is not the place the guidelines describe, and the sections at the end point to services whose own rules say otherwise.

What the Guidelines say

The Guidelines are dated 11-20-2008, and they cite a rating system called FictionRatings.com. In our summary, with the page's wording where we quote it:

  • "Please note FanFiction does not accept explicit content, Fiction Rating: MA, and the rating is only presented for reference.";
  • the title and summary of an entry must be rated K;
  • not allowed as entries: non-stories, one or two liners, MST, stories with non-fictional characters such as actors and musicians, any interactive entry (the page lists "choose your adventure, second person/you based, Q&As"), and chat or script format;
  • the site does not archive entries based on works of authors who asked not to be included.

Two sentences on the same page pull in different directions, and we publish both: the site "does not accept explicit content", and it "does not filter content and is an open system that trusts the writer's judgement". Read together, the rule is stated and the site relies on writers and removal rather than a filter. The Terms of Service support removal: section 7B lets the site remove content such as pornography and obscene material. How strictly that is applied in practice is not something the pages we read can tell us, and we have not read the archive.

Age: three answers

The age answers differ by source, and we record each.

We read both store listings directly on October 27, 2026. The store advisories describe frequent mature or suggestive themes and infrequent sexual content or nudity, while the Guidelines say explicit content is not accepted. We record the difference and do not resolve it. We looked for a statement that all characters are adults in the Guidelines, the Terms of Service and the home page, and did not find one. That describes the pages we read, not the stories.

Is FanFiction.Net free?

Yes. The App Store text says "Read - Access millions of stories for free", and the plan record shows no paid tier on the pages we read. Whether you can read logged out is not confirmed: Terms section 3A says "In order to access some features of the Service, you will have to create a FanFiction.Net account." Ads, billing and refunds were not read, because no paid tier was found.

The app and offline reading

WhereAvailableNotes
iPhone and iPadYesSeller FictionPress Inc; free.
AndroidYesFictionPress developer; 1M+ downloads, 4K reviews (inventory).
Web browserYesWeb reading; scripts get a bot challenge and a browser loads it.

The official app lists these functions in its store text: reading, text-to-speech that turns stories into audio books, syncing of library and downloaded stories between devices, and translation of stories "into your native language via our AI engine". The translation and the text-to-speech are not AI story writing, and we found no AI story generation on the pages we read. The Google Play listing shows 1M+ downloads. Users can download and save stories, so the service appears on our offline reading page.

For writers

Account holders may submit stories, poetry and other submissions under section 6A of the Terms. Our records show free publishing and no payment to authors, but the payment part has no cited page, so treat it as unconfirmed. The Guidelines point original, non-fan work to the sister site. For where paid routes exist, see how erotica platforms pay writers.

Privacy and billing

We did not read the privacy practices, ads or billing, since the site is free. Our page on whether erotica apps are private explains what to look for in a free site's policy.

Where explicit fan fiction sits instead

If the Guidelines above ruled the site out for you, the services whose own rules allow explicit fiction are set out on their pages. Archive of Our Own allows works of every rating, explicit ones included, and our page on it is a facts page. Literotica is an adults-only story site that lists fan fiction among its groups and publishes its own limits. Smashwords is a store that hides erotica until a registered user asks. None of this is a recommendation: each page quotes its own policy. See also Archive of Our Own against Literotica and our guide to how to find free erotica. Tapas and Wattpad, the other places readers look first, are covered in Tapas vs Wattpad.

The platforms section lists every service we cover.
