Quick answer
- The short answer: none of the five matches Archive of Our Own on everything. It is free, carries no ads, accepts works of every rating and files them by fandom, and its own counter shows 18,800,000 works.
- An official app: FanFiction.Net has one, free, with text-to-speech, and does not accept explicit content. Wattpad has apps and allows explicit scenes only in Mature stories. AO3 says it has no resources for a mobile app.
- A stated rule on characters: Literotica and Chyoa both print a sentence that all characters are over 18. The AO3 pages we read have none, and its policy has no age-based restriction on fictional content.
- Branching and audio: Chyoa is built around branching stories. Literotica has a free audio category that plays in a browser.
- Not a verdict on AO3: our page on it recommends nothing, and we do not say it needs replacing. This page only sorts what other services keep and drop.
Why look for an Archive of Our Own alternative
Archive of Our Own, usually called AO3, is a free, volunteer-run archive of fan-made works that is a project of the nonprofit Organization for Transformative Works. We treat it as a facts page, and what follows is a list of things its own pages do not provide, not a list of faults. The record is on our Archive of Our Own page.
- No official app. Its FAQ says "resources just aren't available for us to create and maintain mobile apps at this time". A mobile skin applies automatically, and works can be downloaded to read offline. Third-party apps exist, and we have assessed none.
- Creators set the labels. Ratings and archive warnings are fields the creator fills in, and "Not Rated" is allowed. The policy adds that a work with a non-specific rating may contain content of the highest rating. For the reader, a Mature, Explicit or unrated work shows a Proceed screen, a notice and not a lock, and no age check for reading is described.
- No sentence about the characters. The Content Policy's age-related restriction covers
sexually explicit or suggestive photographic or photorealistic images of real children
. It has no restriction on fictional content on age grounds. That is a fact about the text of the policy, and not a verdict on the archive or on any work in it. Some readers want a service that prints a rule on characters, and Literotica and Chyoa do. - Accounts come through an invitation queue, and whether you need one just to read is not stated outright on the pages we read.
- No native audio, no interactive works that we confirmed. The archive hosts embeds of external audio only.
- No payment to anyone. The Content Policy bars commercial promotion, so writers who want income need another route; see how erotica platforms pay writers.
AO3 is free and has no ads, so none of these is about price. The archive's home page carries its own counters. We do not link any fandom, tag, search or work from this site.
The best Archive of Our Own alternatives, by what each keeps
We chose five and ordered them by how much of AO3's shape they keep: fandom filing first, then rating policy, then format. Each pick says what it drops. This is the one page in the alternatives index where the honest summary is that nothing replaces the original, though several keep part of it.

FanFiction.Net
Best if you want an official app and fandom filing
Free
- Type
- Free fan fiction archive organised by fandom, with an official app
- Free tier
- Yes
- Library
- Millions of stories (vendor claim)
- Explicit content
- No
- Creator program
- Free publishing for account holders; no payment to authors
- Web version
- Yes
FanFiction.Net is a free, long-running fan fiction archive organised by fandom, with an official app on iPhone and Android (1M+ Google Play downloads). The App Store text promises syncing, downloads and "Text to Speech - Turn stories into audio books", and reading is free. It keeps the shape of AO3 most closely.
It drops explicit content. Its guidelines say "FanFiction does not accept explicit content, Fiction Rating: MA", and entry titles and summaries must be rated K. Interactive entries such as choose-your-adventure are not allowed either. The guidelines carry a 2008 date, the Terms were last updated February 12, 2019 and set a minimum age of 13, and the App Store rates the app 16+.

Wattpad
Best for fan fiction on a social platform with apps
$4.99/mofree tier
- Type
- Social reading and writing platform for web fiction and fan fiction
- Free tier
- Yes
- Library
- Not confirmed
- Explicit content
- Only in stories rated Mature (17+), between consenting adults; pornography is banned
- Creator program
- Yes
- Web version
- Yes
Wattpad is a social platform for web fiction and fan fiction, and its home page genre row includes Fanfiction. It has iPhone and Android apps (100M+ Google Play downloads), reading is free with ads, and Premium removes ads from $4.99 a month on the web page. Its Mature setting lets stories carry explicit scenes between consenting adults.
It drops AO3's breadth of policy. The Content Guidelines ban content created primarily for sexual arousal, the audience starts at 13, and an account is needed to browse very much. Ads, Coins for paid Originals and a Premium tier are all absent from AO3. Wattpad alternatives looks at it from the other side.

Literotica
Best for explicit stories with a stated character-age rule
Free
- Type
- Free community site for adult stories (web only)
- Free tier
- Yes
- Library
- 500,000+ stories
- Explicit content
- Yes
- Creator program
- Free publishing for members, contests and awards; no direct author pay
- Web version
- Yes
Literotica is free and adults only, and it is a website bar an old Android APK on its own site. Its footer says "Characters in all stories are over 18", the Content Guidelines ban sexual activity involving characters under 18, and the terms treat a visit as acceptance that you are an adult. It adds a free audio category and story games, and no account is needed to read. It is not organised as a fandom archive.
It drops the scale and the fandom model. The About page claims 500,000+ stories, against AO3's counter of 18,800,000 works, both company figures. It does not publish AI-generated work, it has no store app, and it pays authors nothing directly. Our Archive of Our Own against Literotica page compares them.

Chyoa
Best for branching works in a browser
Free
- Type
- community-written interactive adult fiction site (web)
- Free tier
- Yes
- Library
- Not confirmed
- Explicit content
- Yes
- Creator program
- Yes
- Web version
- Yes
Chyoa is a free, ad-supported library of adult fiction in which each chapter leads to several continuations and any registered user can write the next one. Most visible stories can be read signed out, and its footer says "All characters in all stories on this site are over 18". An entry screen asks you to confirm you are 18 or older.
It drops fandom filing and the nonprofit, ad-free model: it shows ads, and we found no store app. Its policy is in a Guide and not a terms page. It is the choice if the format, not the fandom, is what you want.

Webnovel
Best for fan fiction inside a web novel app
$9.99/mofree tier
- Type
- Translated and original web novel app with comics
- Free tier
- Free chapters, then coins
- Audio stories
- Not confirmed
- Interactive stories
- Not confirmed
- AI stories
- Not confirmed
- iPhone app
- Yes
- Android app
- Yes
Webnovel sells translated and original web novels, comics and fan fiction in apps for iPhone and Android and on the web. The App Store text says its library "boasts hundreds of thousands of fanfictions", a claim with no total. Chapters unlock with coins, at about 50 coins a dollar.
It drops nearly everything else. Its Terms (last updated January 14, 2019) prohibit content that is "indecent" or "pornographic" without naming sexually explicit text, so its rule is unclear, the minimum age is 13, the per-chapter coin cost is not published, and the shelf leans towards fantasy serials. Choose it for the format, not for the policy.
Archive of Our Own and its alternatives side by side
Library figures are the services' own counters or claims and were not verified. Archive of Our Own is first, and Not confirmed marks silence in the pages we read.

Read across, no row is free, ad-free, app-equipped and open to every rating. FanFiction.Net comes closest on free, fandom filing and an app, Wattpad on a Mature setting with apps, and Literotica on openness to explicit work. That is the whole finding, and why we say there is no like-for-like.
How to choose
- The app matters most: FanFiction.Net, if you can live without explicit work, or Wattpad if you want its Mature setting and can live with ads. Our page on offline reading lists who documents downloads.
- A written rule about characters matters most: Literotica or Chyoa, and read each service's guidelines yourself. A sentence is a rule, not an audit.
- Format matters most: Chyoa for branching, Literotica for audio.
- Staying put is a fair answer. If you came for fandom filing at scale with no ads, none of these replaces it. Content warnings are explained in our glossary entry on content warnings, and how to find free erotica covers the free field.
FAQ
Is there a site like Archive of Our Own?
Not one that matches it on everything. FanFiction.Net is organised by fandom and free, with an official app, but does not accept explicit content. Wattpad has apps and a Mature setting. Literotica is adults only and free. Each differs from AO3 on at least two points.
Is there an official app for fan fiction like AO3?
FanFiction.Net has an official app on iPhone and Android, with syncing, downloads and text-to-speech, and Wattpad has apps too. AO3 says it has no resources for a mobile app.
Is there an AO3 alternative that allows explicit stories?
Literotica and Chyoa allow them and are adults only, Wattpad allows explicit scenes in Mature stories, and FanFiction.Net does not accept explicit content. AO3 allows works of every rating.
Which alternatives say all characters are adults?
Literotica's footer says "Characters in all stories are over 18" and Chyoa's footer says all characters are over 18. We found no such sentence on the AO3 pages we read. It describes the pages and not the works.
Is there an AO3 alternative with audio?
Literotica has a full audio category that plays in a browser, and the FanFiction.Net app converts stories to speech. AO3 hosts no audio natively, only embeds of external audio.
