Erotica Apps

NovelCrafter Review

Writing tool

NovelCrafter is novel-writing software for authors, not a reading app, and it ships no AI model of its own: you connect a vendor or run a local model, and that model decides what can be written. Plans run from $4 to $20 a month with a 21-day trial and no card. If you are looking for pages for authors, start with our guide to the best erotica platforms for writers.

Quick answer

  • What it is: novel-writing software with planning, a Codex story bible, a prose editor and chat. A writers' tool, not a reading app. For authors weighing where to publish, see how to publish erotica.
  • Whose model: none. NovelCrafter says it does not offer any AI model itself, so what can be written is decided by the vendor or local model you connect.
  • Price: Scribe $4 (no AI features), Hobbyist $8, Artisan $14 and Specialist $20 a month, in USD, localised to your region. The AI bill is separate and goes to the vendor.
  • Trial: 21 days, no credit card, all features unlocked.
  • Characters under 18: we found no published rule in the pages we read. The Privacy Policy says the service is not directed at people under 18.

What Is NovelCrafter?

NovelCrafter is a web app for planning and writing novels, from novelcrafter UG (haftungsbeschränkt) of Hamburg, Germany. Its pricing page describes unlimited books, series and universes, a Codex that works as a story bible, a prose editor and chat, with AI as an optional layer. Its own FAQ calls it a writing app that supports AI in its integration.

It publishes no library, no stories to read and no reader-facing choices. That is why it sits in our platform reviews as a writers' tool and is never ranked beside the reading apps in the AI story section.

NovelCrafter review: who it suits

On the published pages, NovelCrafter suits an author who wants a planning and drafting environment and wants to choose the AI model, and so its content rules, for themselves. It is a weaker fit for someone who wants a service that writes for them out of the box, because with no model of its own there is nothing to run until you connect one. It is not a place to read.

Whose model is it? None

The content rules at an AI writing service follow whoever supplies the model. NovelCrafter supplies none. The FAQ answer "Does Novelcrafter provide its own AI?" says we currently do not offer any AI model ourselves and explains that By separating the cost of the software from that of AI credits, users can choose what model they want to use. You connect an external vendor (OpenRouter is the example given) or run a local model.

That makes NovelCrafter the opposite case to Sudowrite, whose own Muse model is documented as nearly unfiltered while its OpenAI-based models are strict. At NovelCrafter there is no model-level rule to report, because there is no model. The pages we read say what happens as a result: the help guide "Writing NSFW Content with AI" (last updated July 1, 2026) warns that jumping straight into explicit requests often triggers refusals from most models and says NSFW is whatever a model or its provider has decided warrants moderation. The site also has a Romance & NSFW writing genre guide.

The Terms only bar use that violates laws: Users must not use the app in ways that violate any laws, infringe upon the rights of others, or interfere with the functioning of the app. They were last updated on 29 September 2023. So NovelCrafter itself does not restrict adult content, and the answer to "can I write it here" is "it depends on the model". As general advice, not something NovelCrafter says, read the connected vendor's own terms before you start; we did not read any provider's. For the wider question see NSFW rules at AI story apps.

What you pay for: software and AI are billed separately

The plans are priced in USD and shown as monthly, with a Monthly / Annually toggle labelled "2 Months off". The page says Prices have been localized to your region, so your own figure may differ, and the annual amounts do not appear in the page text we read.

  • Scribe, $4: unlimited books, series and universes and basic review features. No AI features.
  • Hobbyist, $8: everything in Scribe plus AI through your own key: scene summarisation, character extraction and generating from scene beats.
  • Artisan, $14: adds Workshop Chat and advanced review features. It is marked "Most popular". The feature table marks the advanced reviewing tools as "(planned)", so some of what it lists may not yet ship.
  • Specialist, $20: adds collaborative writing and creating and managing teams.

The service sells no AI credits. The AI cost is paid to whichever vendor you connect, for example OpenRouter, which the FAQ describes as a pay-as-you-go credit system, or it is free if you use a local model. We have no figure for that cost, because it depends on the vendor and the model, and it is not part of the plan price. When you compare NovelCrafter with Sudowrite or NovelAI, compare the plan plus your expected AI bill, not the plan alone.

No context size is published either: that depends on the model you connect. Where AI Dungeon, NovelAI and DreamGen sell tiers on how much story the model can see, NovelCrafter leaves that to your choice of model, and the Codex is its story bible.

Cancelling, refunds and billing

Subscriptions are billed on a recurring basis, monthly or annually, according to the Terms. The billing help page (last updated September 24, 2025) says you can pause, cancel, upgrade or update payment details through the customer portal from within the app, under Manage Subscription. The Terms say users can cancel at any time through their account settings and keep access until the end of the current billing cycle.

Refunds work in layers. The billing help page says that if it has been less than 14 days since you subscribed, you can request a refund by contacting the payment provider, Paddle; after 14 days, reach out to NovelCrafter directly. The Terms (section 5d) say Refunds may be granted at the sole discretion of Novelcrafter within a specified period after the transaction (e.g., within 14 days of the charge). Section 5f adds No refunds will be provided for the remaining days of the subscription if canceled before the end of the cycle.

The billing help page also has an entry titled "Why is there another company on my billing when I check my bank account?", and we did not read the answer. The same page names Paddle as the payment provider. If the line on your statement matters to you, check the first charge yourself; our page on what erotica apps look like on a bank statement covers the general question. For cancelling in general, see cancelling a story app subscription.

The age rule, and what we did not find

On sexual content involving characters under 18, we found no published rule in the Terms of Service, the Privacy Policy, the Imprint, the FAQ answer on its own AI, the help guide "Writing NSFW Content with AI" or the Billing & Payments help page. This describes the pages we read, not a claim that NovelCrafter has no policy. Because it ships no model, the question moves to the provider of whichever model you connect.

The Terms state no minimum age and describe no check. The Privacy Policy, last updated August 31, 2026, says in section 9: Novelcrafter is not designed for or directed towards children under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect or maintain data from those who are under 18 years old. That is a rule about data, not about content. We also found no sentence stating that all characters are adults.

Mobile apps and web version

WhereAvailableNotes
Web browserYesA web app ('Start Writing').

NovelCrafter is a web app ("Start Writing"). We found no iPhone or Android listing, so we say nothing either way. Audio, narration and image generation are not listed on the pricing page, and we do not claim they are absent.

Pros

  • A 21-day trial with no card and every feature unlocked
  • You choose the model, so you choose whose content rules apply
  • Cancelling is available from the customer portal inside the app
  • The software price and the AI cost are separated openly

Cons

  • The plan price is not the whole cost: the AI bill goes to a vendor and we have no figure for it
  • We found no published rule on characters under 18, and the Terms date from 2023
  • Some review features on the dearer plans are marked "(planned)"
  • No mobile app listing found, and the annual amounts are not shown in the page text

Best NovelCrafter alternatives

If you want a fiction-tuned model included in the price, Sudowrite is the other writers' tool in this section, with its own Muse model and credits instead of a bring-your-own key; NovelAI against Sudowrite shows how the model-and-rules question plays out between the two. NovelAI sells unlimited generated text at a flat monthly price. For tools aimed at readers rather than authors, see the best AI erotica apps, and browse the wider set in platform reviews. Our page on AI-generated stories shows which services say they use AI on their own pages.

FAQ

Does NovelCrafter have its own AI?

No. The FAQ says it does not currently offer any AI model itself. You connect an external vendor, such as OpenRouter, or run a local model.

Can you write NSFW content in NovelCrafter?

That depends on the model you connect. NovelCrafter's Terms only bar unlawful use, and its help guide says NSFW is whatever a model or its provider has decided warrants moderation. Explicit requests often trigger refusals from most models.

How much does NovelCrafter cost?

Scribe is $4 a month with no AI features, Hobbyist $8, Artisan $14 and Specialist $20, localised to your region. The AI itself is billed by the vendor you connect, not by NovelCrafter.

Is there a NovelCrafter free trial?

Yes: 21 days, no credit card required, all features unlocked. There is no free plan.

Can I get a refund from NovelCrafter?

Within 14 days of subscribing, request it through the payment provider, Paddle. After that, contact NovelCrafter directly. The Terms say refunds are at its sole discretion and that the remaining days of a cycle are not refunded.

Is NovelCrafter a reading app?

No. It is novel-writing software. It has no library and no stories to read.

Final verdict

NovelCrafter fits an author who wants planning tools and wants to pick the AI model, accepting that the content rules, the price of the AI and any age policy then belong to that model's provider. We found no published rule of its own on characters under 18, so look at the connected vendor's terms before relying on it. We have not used it, so this reads the published plans, help pages and policies.
