Quick answer
- The gap: DreamPress gives 15 free credits a day, 20 from day 7 of a writing streak, and never publishes what a chapter costs in credits. Erota gives 15 a day too and prints the price of every generation: 1 credit, 2 or 4 by model, and 8 or 16 to have it read aloud.
- No credits at all: NovelAI sells unlimited text generation and text-to-speech on every paid tier from $10 a month, with its currency reserved for images.
- On Android: Pirr runs on both stores with a free daily allowance of 20 AI actions. We found no Android listing for DreamPress.
- Web against App Store: DreamPress Pro is $9.99 a month on its own site and $12.99 on the App Store, with yearly items at $78.00, $79.99 and a $48.00 Special the listing does not explain. The web page simply says iOS pricing differs.
- Caveat: we generated nothing and subscribed to nothing. Everything here is from published pricing pages, policies and store listings.
Why look for a DreamPress AI alternative
DreamPress AI is a chaptered story generator with narration bundled into every generation, choices that steer the plot, image generation and a free tier that needs no card. Its content policy is unusually direct for this field, stating that All characters must be over the age of 18.
and naming the operator, a company registered in England and Wales. Our DreamPress AI review has the record in full. Four things still send people looking.
- A credit price with no price list. Images cost 3 credits each and a narration replay costs 1, both published. What a chapter costs is not, so neither the 15 daily free credits nor Pro's 1,000 monthly credits can be converted into stories. Our arithmetic on the top-up ladder gives the credits themselves a value: 400 for $4.99 is 1.25 cents each, 12,000 for $99.99 is 0.83 cents, so the largest pack is about a third cheaper per credit than the smallest.
- Pro's credits expire, and unlimited has a ceiling. The 1,000 monthly credits do not roll over, while credits bought in a pack never expire and are spent last. Unlimited writing is worded as unlimited on the standard model
subject to a fair-use ceiling
, which is not a number either. - The iPhone costs more. $12.99 a month against $9.99 on the web is 30 per cent more, and the yearly items are $78.00 and $79.99 against $71.99. There is also a $48.00 Yearly Special that the listing does not say who gets. A weekly item at $9.99 would be $519.48 over 52 weeks, against $71.99 for the web year.
- No Android. No Google Play listing is linked from the site and we found none, so Android readers are in a mobile browser.
Credit where it is due before the list: the web year at $71.99 against twelve monthly payments of $9.99, which is $119.88, really is the 40 per cent saving the page advertises, and the refund rule is better than most. A subscription with no credits spent can be refunded on request within 14 days, under UK consumer regulations. Few services in this section offer anything of the kind.

Erota is the same shape of offer with the missing number filled in. A free account gets 15 credits a day, the same figure DreamPress prints, and the FAQ then says what they buy: a story costs 1 credit on its Apprentice model, 2 on Artisan and 4 on Master, a novel charges the model's rate for the outline and again for each chapter, and having a story read aloud costs 8 credits at standard quality or 16 at HD. So the free allowance is up to fifteen short stories a day on the cheapest model, which is a sentence DreamPress's pricing page does not let anyone write. Paid tiers start at $9.90 a month, falling to $8.90 on quarterly billing and $7.90 on yearly, each with 200 monthly credits on top of the daily free ones and a 7-day trial. The story form picks acts, themes, perspective, style, length and language, with five languages offered, and the pricing page footer states that all characters are 18 or older.
The catches: the daily credits expire at the end of the day and do not accumulate, the site sells through two routes with different prices and currencies, its own checkout in dollars and Patreon in euros plus VAT, and cancelling a Patreon membership is something only you can do. Its own pages also contradict each other on credit costs, the FAQ saying 2 and 4 for Artisan and Master while the homepage model picker labels them 3x and 4x with a Grandmaster at 6x. We print both and resolve neither. There is no app on either store.

NovelAI
Best for unlimited text with no credit arithmetic at all
$10.00/mo
- Type
- Subscription AI storyteller and anime image generator (web app)

- Explicit content
- Not confirmed: the terms do not restrict adult content, but no sentence states that it is permitted

The other way to fix an unpriced credit is to stop counting. NovelAI sells unlimited text generation and unlimited text-to-speech on every paid tier, starting at $10 a month for Tablet, $15 for Scroll and $25 for Opus, with the only currency, Anlas, reserved for images and other metered extras. The difference you pay for as you climb is memory: roughly 8,192 tokens, 12,288 and 28,672. You write in a document editor with the model continuing, or play in Text Adventure mode, and the Terms require users to be 18 or older with no clause restricting adult content.
What you give up is the free tier. The docs FAQ says there are currently no plans for a free version, and the one-time Paper trial is 50 text generations, 30 images and 100 text-to-speech generations on a verified email, which does not refresh. There is no native app on either store, only an installable web app, so the Android complaint is answered sideways rather than solved. Anlas that came with a subscription reset to zero when it ends, including when you cancel early, and the Terms say there are no refunds unless the company grants one. We also looked for a published rule on sexual content involving people under 18 across its terms, privacy policy and documentation and did not find one, which is a statement about the pages we read and not a claim that no policy exists. What NovelAI costs works through the tiers.

Pirr
Best on Android, with a daily allowance you can count
$12.99/mofree tier
- Type
- Interactive romance fiction app (iOS, Android, web beta)
- Free tier
- Yes
- Audio stories
- No
- Interactive stories
- Yes
- AI stories
- Yes
- iPhone app
- Yes
- Android app
- Yes
Pirr is the pick for anyone whose real problem is the phone. It is on both stores and in a web beta, it is built by a named Swedish company, and its free Freemium tier is specific: unlimited access to its story library, 20 Standard AI actions a day, one character per story and three saved characters. Stories adapt line by line to your choices rather than arriving as finished chapters. Its Code of Conduct, updated September 2026, is the strictest written position in this group, saying the platform is 18+, that all characters in sexual or explicit content must be aged 18 or older, and that fantasy and paranormal characters must be clearly adults. Mature themes are off until an account confirms it is 18.
Two things it does not do. It is text only, by its own statement that it creates written stories and does not generate audio, so the narration DreamPress bundles into every generation is simply absent. And its own price is ambiguous in the same way DreamPress's is: the premium page prints $8.99 a month or $12.99 a month without saying which billing term each figure belongs to, while the App Store lists $12.99 monthly and $99.99 yearly. Cancelling is at least clear: Profile, then Settings, then Manage Subscription, inside the app.

NovelCrafter
Best if you want to choose the model and see the AI bill separately
$4.00/mo
- Type
- Novel-writing software with bring-your-own AI (web app)
- Free tier
- No
- Library
- Not confirmed
- Explicit content
- Depends on the model you connect; NovelCrafter itself does not restrict it
- Creator program
- Not confirmed
- Web version
- Yes
NovelCrafter takes the credit question off the table by never selling AI in the first place. It is novel-writing software with planning tools, a Codex story bible and a prose editor, and it ships no model of its own: you connect a vendor or run a local model, and pay that bill where it falls. Plans are $4 a month for Scribe with no AI features, $8 for Hobbyist which adds generation through your own key, $14 for Artisan and $20 for Specialist, with a 21-day free trial that needs no card. Refunds can be requested within 14 days through its payment provider. What it will write is decided by the model you attach, and its own help guide is blunt that explicit requests are refused by many models and that what counts as explicit is whatever each provider decided.
Be clear about what this is. It is a writers' tool, not a reading app: no reader-facing choices, no narration, no generated images, no library, no apps. If you came to DreamPress to read chapters with voices, this is the wrong direction. If you came to write a long thing and resented a credit meter, it is the right one. We found no published rule on sexual content involving people under 18 in its terms, privacy policy or help pages, which again describes the pages we read.

Literotica
Best if you would rather read something a person wrote
Free
- Type
- Free community site for adult stories (web only)
- Free tier
- Yes
- Library
- 500,000+ stories
- Explicit content
- Yes
- Creator program
- Free publishing for members, contests and awards; no direct author pay
- Web version
- Yes
Worth saying once on a page like this: the cheapest alternative to generating a story is reading one that already exists. Literotica is free, needs no account, claims more than 500,000 stories, and its Content Guidelines ban works generated by AI outright, with the site describing itself as publishing works by humans for humans. The footer of every page carries the rule DreamPress states in its policy, Characters in all stories are over 18.
, and there are story games with reader-chosen paths and a free audio section if narration was part of the appeal.
Nothing here is customised to you, which is the entire point of the service you are leaving: no prompt, no characters of your own, no images, no choices beyond the ones an author wrote. There is no store app and no offline mode we could find, and the site is a long-running community board rather than a product. Take it as the free fallback, not as a replacement.
DreamPress AI and its alternatives side by side
DreamPress heads the table, with its web prices rather than its App Store ones. Not confirmed marks something the service does not publish.
| Platform | Monthly | Free tier | Credits or coins | Audio stories | Android app | Web version |

Only two rows carry both a daily free allowance and a published price for what that allowance buys, and only one of those two also reads the result aloud. That is the shape of the decision, and it is why Erota rather than the bigger names heads this list.
How to choose
- You want to know what a generation costs before you spend one: Erota publishes it per model, and NovelAI removes the question by selling unlimited text.
- You are on Android: Pirr is the only pick here with a store listing on both platforms. Everything else is a browser or an iPhone.
- You want narration: Erota reads stories aloud for 8 or 16 credits, NovelAI includes unlimited text-to-speech on every paid tier. Pirr and NovelCrafter do not generate audio at all.
- You want written rules about characters: Pirr's Code of Conduct and Erota's footer both state the 18 rule, as DreamPress's content policy does. We did not find one in NovelAI's or NovelCrafter's pages. The comparison across the whole cluster is in do AI story apps allow NSFW.
- You want to spend nothing: start with free AI erotica stories, which sets out every daily allowance in this field side by side.
Before switching, read the sentence about renewal on whichever page you sign up from, because in this cluster the web price and the store price are rarely the same number and the store is usually the dearer one. The mechanics of a credit system in general are in how story app credits work, the ranked field is on best AI erotica apps, and custom erotic story generators covers the services that write to a brief. Readers leaving something else entirely should start at the alternatives hub.
FAQ
Is there a DreamPress AI app for Android?
None is linked from its site and we found none, so the app is iPhone only and Android readers use the web app. Of the alternatives here, only Pirr has listings on both stores.
Why is DreamPress AI more expensive on the App Store?
The pricing page says only that iOS subscription pricing differs. The figures are $12.99 a month on the App Store against $9.99 on the web, and yearly items of $78.00 and $79.99 against $71.99, plus a $48.00 Yearly Special the listing does not explain.
What is the best free alternative to DreamPress AI?
Erota, on the same shape of offer: 15 free credits a day, and a published cost of 1 credit for a story on its cheapest model. Pirr's free tier gives 20 AI actions a day on both phone platforms, and Literotica costs nothing but generates nothing.
Which alternative does not use credits?
NovelAI sells unlimited text generation and text-to-speech on every paid tier from $10 a month, keeping its currency for images. NovelCrafter sells no AI at all, from $4 a month, and you pay the model vendor separately.
Do any of these read the story aloud like DreamPress does?
Erota charges 8 credits a story at standard quality or 16 at HD, and NovelAI includes unlimited text-to-speech on every paid tier. Pirr states that it creates written stories only, and NovelCrafter lists no audio feature.
What does a DreamPress chapter cost in credits?
It is not published. The pricing page gives 3 credits for an image and 1 for a narration replay, and says every chapter spends credits without saying how many. We do not estimate it, and neither the free allowance nor Pro's 1,000 monthly credits can be converted into stories until it is published.
