Quick answer
- Most characters in one story: Erota takes up to four, picked from a form. Pirr takes 1 on the free plan and up to 3 on Premium, with 3 saved characters free and unlimited saved on Premium.
- Memory: DreamPress AI says its free plan has self-updating story memory and living lore, and Pro adds long-term memory. AI Dungeon counts Memories, from 25 free to 800 on Ultimate. NovelAI's memory runs from 8,192 to 28,672 tokens.
- Privacy: NovelAI's Privacy Policy says stories are end-to-end encrypted and prompts are not stored. DreamGen says private stories are not used to train models unless you opt in, and that automated moderation scans them. Pirr says your stories stay private until you publish.
- Free: Erota and DreamPress AI give 15 credits a day, Pirr 20 Standard actions, DreamGen 200 monthly and 25 daily credits.
- Still bound by the rules: a custom prompt does not change what a service bans.
What custom covers
The word covers four different things, and a page that claims "custom stories" rarely says which. The first is a form: you tick or choose from a menu and the service writes to it. The second is a guided set-up, a wizard that asks for characters, setting and plot. The third is a blank box where you describe an idea or a scenario in your own words. The fourth is a saved character, who is kept between stories. Our custom stories feature page lists every service that says it has the first three, and character customisation lists the fourth.
What you can supply, service by service
| Service | Characters | Preferences | What carries over |
|---|---|---|---|
Up to 4 optional characters; they star in your story and its next chapters | A form: acts, themes, perspective, writing style, length, language and AI model | Characters across chapters; a Novel Studio mode for multi-chapter projects and Continue Story | |
| Characters and personas you create | Guided wizards for stories and chats | Free: self-updating story memory and living lore. Pro: long-term memory and consistent characters across images | |
| Names and pronouns. Free: 1 per story, 3 saved. Premium: up to 3 per story, unlimited saved | Genre, vibe, location and plot; Premium adds custom genres, tropes and locations and a plot generator | Saved characters; stories stay private until published | |
| Character development on the free plan; advanced character tools on Premium | A story idea in your own words, plus story templates on Premium | A private library on the free plan | |
| Personalised characters, names and setting | Genres, tropes and a spice level | Custom story drafts and custom characters are listed among data removed on account deletion | |
| Characters you design | Tone, setting, dynamics and mood | Not stated | |
| A custom scenario | Whatever you type | Memories: 25 free, up to 800 on Ultimate | |
| Scenarios you define, with lore and examples | Whatever you write into the scenario | Held in the model context; persistent memory beyond that is not confirmed | |
| Whatever you write in the editor | A document the model continues | Memory of about 32,768 characters (Tablet) to 114,688 (Opus) |
Two things stand out. Erota is the form-driven service in this group, and its fixed menu makes the result more predictable than a blank box. Pirr is the one that rations characters by plan, which turns a creative choice into a pricing feature: a free account cannot put two named characters into the same story.
Memory decides whether a character stays the same
A custom character is only as good as the model's memory of it. Every service here writes with a window of text it can see, and what falls outside is gone from the story unless the service stores it separately. AI Dungeon sells that window as context, from 4k tokens free to 64k on the pricing page for Ultimate (its help page disagrees and says 32k), and counts Memories as a second tool. NovelAI sells it as memory: 8,192 tokens on Tablet, 12,288 on Scroll and 28,672 on Opus. Its documentation gives four characters to the token, so the smallest tier holds about 32,768 characters of story and notes. DreamGen sells 5,000, 15,000 and 30,000 tokens at $7.83, $19.35 and $48.30 list prices.
Erota, Pirr, NovelX and DreamPress AI publish no size. DreamPress AI says only that memory is self-updating and that Pro adds a long-term memory, and Erota says characters appear in the story and its next chapters. For those, the test is the one a reader has to run: whether a named character is still the same person five chapters later. We have not run it. The AI Dungeon review works the context arithmetic in more detail, and the tier tables are on the AI stories hub.
What happens to what you type
Custom stories hold the most personal input in this section, because the preferences are the point. The privacy statements are thin, and they are the services' own words, not something we tested.
- NovelAI. The Privacy Policy, effective September 10, 2026, summarises itself this way:
your stories are end-to-end encrypted and we cannot read them, and we do not store the prompts you send for generation.
- DreamGen. The Terms and Privacy FAQ says private stories are not used to train models unless you opt in, which is off by default, and that automated moderation scans private content. The Privacy Policy lists account information, payment information and the content you create as what it collects.
- Pirr. The FAQ says every story you create remains private until you decide to publish it yourself.
- Satinaire. Google Play's Data safety section says the app may share personal info and app activity with third parties and may collect personal info and financial info; data is encrypted in transit and deletion is on request. Deleting an account removes custom story drafts and custom characters. The date of birth that gates adult content is collected only when you try to open restricted content.
- AI Dungeon. Private and Unlisted adventures are not moderated beyond the Walls Approach, which prevents content suggesting or glorifying the sexual exploitation of children. The privacy policy is linked from the home page and we recorded none of its contents.
- Erota, DreamPress AI and NovelX. Each links a privacy policy that we did not read.
The contrast between the first two is the useful one. A service that says it cannot read your stories and one that says automated moderation scans them are describing different systems, though neither says a person reads anything. Our page on how reading apps use your data sets out what to look for in any policy.
What a custom prompt cannot change
Customisation sits inside each service's rules. Erota's Terms bar the same themes whatever the form says, and its FAQ charges 1 to 5 credits for a policy violation. DreamPress AI's content policy requires every character to be over 18. Pirr's Code of Conduct says all characters involved in sexual content must be 18 or older, and fantasy and paranormal characters must be clearly adults. AI Dungeon's filter runs even on the Mature setting. Our guides to AI porn story generators and NSFW rules at AI story apps list what each bans.
Ownership is the other limit worth a line. Erota's Pro and Ultimate plans list commercial rights to the generated text and audio. We recorded no equivalent statement at the other services, so a reader who plans to publish what they generate should read the terms first.
Choosing
- A form and a predictable result: Erota.
- A guided set-up and a free memory feature: DreamPress AI.
- Saved characters and romance: Pirr, if you accept one character per story on the free plan.
- The most control over context: NovelAI or AI Dungeon, which sell memory and context as the product.
The AI interactive erotica page covers services where the story responds to your next move, and the free AI erotica stories page compares the free tiers.
FAQ
Can I choose my own characters in an AI erotica generator?
Yes at Erota (up to four), Pirr (one on the free plan, up to three on Premium), DreamPress AI (characters and personas you create), NovelX, Satinaire and Smuthie. At AI Dungeon, DreamGen and NovelAI you write them into the scenario or the editor yourself.
Will the AI remember my characters?
It depends on memory. DreamPress AI says its free plan has self-updating story memory and Pro adds long-term memory; AI Dungeon counts Memories; NovelAI and DreamGen sell a window measured in tokens. Erota, Pirr and NovelX publish no size.
Are my custom erotic stories private?
Pirr says stories stay private until you publish. NovelAI's Privacy Policy says stories are end-to-end encrypted and prompts are not stored. DreamGen says private stories are not used for training unless you opt in, but that automated moderation scans them. These are the services' own statements.
Can I save a character for later stories?
Pirr lets a free account keep 3 saved characters and Premium unlimited. The other services we cover do not describe saved characters in the pages we read.
Does a custom prompt bypass the content rules?
No. Each service's rules apply to what you type, and Erota charges credits for policy violations. Allowing explicit content is not the same as allowing everything.
