Quick answer
- Free: AI Dungeon has a free tier with 4k tokens of context on most models and store apps. DreamGen gives 200 monthly and 25 daily credits. NovelAI has no free plan, only a one-time trial of 50 text generations, and its cheapest plan is $10 a month.
- A stated adult policy: AI Dungeon has a Mature level you confirm as 18+, and Erota is "Custom Explicit Erotic stories written by AI". NovelAI states no permission and no ban, and has no published rule on sexual content involving people under 18 in the pages we read.
- Writers' tools: Sudowrite has its own Muse model, which its docs say has "virtually none" content filtering, from $19 a month. NovelCrafter ships no model, from $4 a month for the software.
- An app: only AI Dungeon of these has iPhone and Android apps, and Sudowrite has mobile companion apps. NovelAI installs as a web app.
- The cost question: unlimited text is NovelAI's selling point. None of the five alternatives matches it at the same price, and DreamGen's paid tiers use the word unlimited but carry monthly token caps.
Why look for a NovelAI alternative
NovelAI is a subscription AI storyteller from Anlatan Inc.: you write in a document editor and the model continues, or play in Text Adventure mode. Our NovelAI review has the record. The reasons to look elsewhere are specific:
- No free plan. The docs FAQ says there are "no plans for a free version". The Paper trial gives 50 text generations, 30 image generations and 100 text-to-speech generations, once, on an email-verified account. Tablet at $10 a month is the entry price.
- No native app. The FAQ points to the mobile browser and an installable Progressive Web App. Text-to-speech is an AI voice and not human narration.
- The content rules are silent. The Terms of Service (effective December 8th, 2025) require users to be 18 or older and restrict adult content nowhere, but no page states that it is permitted. The only NSFW ban we found covers uploads to the public Explore gallery. We found no published rule on sexual content involving people under 18 in the Terms, Privacy Policy, FAQ, Subscription or Explore pages. That describes the pages we read, not a claim that NovelAI has no policy.
- Anlas come with conditions. Subscription Anlas refill on the renewal date only up to the tier amount and drop to zero when the subscription ends, and extra Anlas can only be bought while subscribed.
- Refunds are not offered. Terms 4.1.2 say there are none unless the company grants them, and subscriptions renew every 30 days.
Tier by tier, what NovelAI costs is set out on our pricing page, and novelai.net carries the current plans.
The best NovelAI alternatives, by what you want to change
We picked five and ordered them by how directly they answer NovelAI's gaps: a free tier and an app, then free credits, then a stated policy, then two tools for authors. The AI Dungeon page carries the context-per-dollar table and this one carries the policy table; the alternatives hub lists both.

AI Dungeon
Best free tier and native apps
$14.99/mofree tier
- Type
- AI text adventure and story game (web, iOS and Android)
- Free tier
- Yes
- Library
- Not confirmed
- Explicit content
- Yes
- Creator program
- Not confirmed
- Web version
- Yes
AI Dungeon has a free tier, iPhone and Android apps, and a web player. The free tier gets 4k tokens of context on most models, nine story generators and 25 Memories. Paid tiers start at $14.99 a month for 8k of context, against NovelAI's 8,192 tokens at $10, and run up to $99.99 for 64k, with two official pages disagreeing on Ultimate. It states its adult policy: a Mature level you confirm as 18+, an in-play filter against sexual content involving people under 18 even on Mature, and rules for public content.
What you pay for the free tier and the apps is price per token of context, and text generation is not unlimited. Whether Mature works on the free tier is not stated. AI Dungeon against NovelAI compares them, and our AI Dungeon alternatives page has the context-per-dollar table.

DreamGen
Best free credits, with role-play
$7.83/mofree tier
- Type
- AI story writer and role-play platform (web)
- Free tier
- Yes
- Library
- Not confirmed
- Explicit content
- Not confirmed: the Terms do not ban adult content but no sentence states that explicit content is permitted
- Creator program
- Not confirmed
- Web version
- Yes
DreamGen is an AI story writer and role-play platform with a free tier of 200 monthly credits and 25 daily credits. Starter is $7.83 a month at list price with a 5,000-token context, Advanced $19.35 with 15,000 and Pro $48.30 with 30,000. It is about $2 below NovelAI's entry price and starts free, but its "unlimited" has an asterisk and monthly token caps, third-party models cost credits, and it is web only with no store app found.
On policy, DreamGen is close to NovelAI: its Terms do not ban adult content but no sentence permits it. They do bar sexual content involving fictional people under 18, and the Terms and Privacy FAQ say private stories are not used for training unless you opt in, while automated moderation scans private content.

Erota
Best for a stated explicit policy and stories written to a form
$9.90/mofree tier
- Type
- AI-written explicit erotic story generator (web)
- Free tier
- Yes
- Library
- Not confirmed
- Explicit content
- Yes
- Creator program
- Not confirmed
- Web version
- Yes
Erota generates explicit stories from a form where you pick acts, themes, perspective, style, length, language and model. A free account gets 15 daily credits that expire each day, enough for one story on the Apprentice model at 1 credit, and Premium is $9.90 a month on monthly billing with 200 monthly credits, the stronger models and text-to-speech listening. Its Terms (last updated 3/18/2026) restrict only sexual content involving people under 18 or animals, rape or violence, scat and vore, and its footer says all characters are 18 or older.
It is a different tool: a story generator, not a co-writing editor, with no store app and no published context size. Credit costs are inconsistent across its pages (the FAQ says Artisan 2 and Master 4, the homepage model labels say 3x, 4x and 6x), so the cost of a story is not settled. Listening costs 8 credits at Standard quality.

Sudowrite
Best for authors who want a fiction-tuned model
$19.00/mo
- Type
- AI writing partner for novelists (web and mobile companion app)
- Free tier
- No
- Library
- Not confirmed
- Explicit content
- Depends on the model: Sudowrite's own Muse model has 'virtually none' content filtering; its OpenAI-based models avoid explicit sexual content
- Creator program
- Not confirmed
- Web version
- Yes
Sudowrite is an AI writing partner for novelists, with Write, Rewrite, Describe, Expand and brainstorming tools around a Story Bible. It has its own models, Muse and Ballad, plus 30+ others. Its docs rate Muse's content filter as "virtually none" and say it "won't shy away from adult content", while the OpenAI-based models avoid explicit sexual content. Plans are Hobby & Student at $19 a month ($10 on annual billing), Professional at $29 ($22) and Max at $59 ($44), with credits and not unlimited text: 225,000, 1,000,000 and 2,000,000 a month.
It is a writers' tool, not a reading app, and there is no free plan, only a trial. Terms and docs contradict each other on refunds. The Terms prohibit using it to create sexually explicit content featuring people under 18, and also list "any obscene or immoral purpose", which sits awkwardly with adult writing. It has mobile companion apps, with higher App Store prices. See NovelAI against Sudowrite.

NovelCrafter
Best if you want to choose the model and its rules
$4.00/mo
- Type
- Novel-writing software with bring-your-own AI (web app)
- Free tier
- No
- Library
- Not confirmed
- Explicit content
- Depends on the model you connect; NovelCrafter itself does not restrict it
- Creator program
- Not confirmed
- Web version
- Yes
NovelCrafter is novel-writing software with planning, a Codex story bible, a prose editor and chat, and it ships no AI model. You connect an outside vendor, for example OpenRouter, or run a local model, and pay that vendor separately. Plans run from Scribe at $4 a month with no AI features to Specialist at $20, there is a 21-day trial with no card needed, and the AI features begin at Hobbyist, $8 a month, with your own key.
That makes content rules the model's business. Its help guide says NSFW "is whatever a model or its provider has decided warrants moderation", and its own Terms bar only unlawful use, infringement and interference with the app. We found no published rule on sexual content involving people under 18 in the pages we read. It is a web app, we found no mobile app, and the total cost depends on which model you connect.
What each says about content and your stories
This is the table NovelAI's gaps call for. It sets out what each service states, in the pages we read, about adult content, about sexual content involving people under 18, and about what it does with your stories. A blank means we have no statement, not that the service has no policy.
| Service | Adult content, as it states it | Sexual content involving people under 18 | Your stories |
|---|---|---|---|
| NovelAI | No sentence permits or bans it; NSFW banned only in the public Explore gallery | No published rule found | Privacy policy summary: stories end-to-end encrypted, prompts not stored |
| AI Dungeon | Allowed on the Mature level, confirmed as 18+ | Banned, fictional characters included, with an in-play filter | Not recorded |
| DreamGen | No sentence permits or bans it | Barred, fictional characters included | Private stories not used for training unless you opt in; automated moderation scans them |
| Erota | Allowed; explicit is the product | Barred, real or fictional | Not recorded |
| Sudowrite | Depends on the model: Muse "virtually none", OpenAI models strict | Barred in the Terms | Not recorded |
| NovelCrafter | Depends on the model you connect | No published rule found | Not recorded |
Two services, NovelAI and NovelCrafter, have no published rule on sexual content involving people under 18 in the pages we read. Only NovelAI and DreamGen say anything about what happens to your stories, and they say different things: encryption at one, a training opt-in with moderation scanning at the other. For the wider picture, see do AI story apps allow NSFW.
NovelAI and its alternatives side by side
NovelAI is first. Not confirmed marks a gap in the pages we read, and for the writers' tools the explicit-content cell shows the model-dependence in the service's own words.
| Platform | Free tier | Free trial | Monthly | iPhone app | Android app | Voice narration | Explicit content |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| No | Yes | $10.00 | No | No | Yes | Not confirmed: the terms do not restrict adult content, but no sentence states that it is permitted | |

How to choose
- You want a free start and an app: AI Dungeon. For other free options, free AI erotica stories lists who offers what.
- You want the policy in writing: AI Dungeon or Erota, and read the wording yourself before relying on it.
- You are writing a novel: Sudowrite if you want a ready model, NovelCrafter if you want to pick the model. Both are writers' tools; the best erotica platforms for writers covers the publishing side.
- You want to stay: NovelAI is the only service here that sells unlimited text generation on every paid tier. If that, and its stated privacy design, are the point, none of the alternatives replaces it.
Our ranking of AI erotica apps orders the reader-facing services, and AI story generators defines the category.
FAQ
Is there a free alternative to NovelAI?
Yes. AI Dungeon has a free tier, DreamGen gives 200 monthly and 25 daily credits, and Erota gives 15 daily credits. NovelAI has no free plan, only a one-time trial of 50 text generations.
Is there a NovelAI alternative with an app?
AI Dungeon has iPhone and Android apps, and Sudowrite has mobile apps. NovelAI says it has no native app and offers an installable web app. DreamGen and Erota are web only as far as we found.
Which NovelAI alternative states that adult content is allowed?
AI Dungeon allows it on the Mature level, which you confirm as 18+. Erota's product is explicit stories. Sudowrite's Muse model has virtually no filter, and NovelCrafter leaves it to the model you connect. NovelAI and DreamGen state neither a permission nor a ban.
Is NovelAI cheaper than its alternatives?
For unlimited text, yes: nothing else here sells it at $10 a month. Erota is $9.90 a month and DreamGen's Starter $7.83, but both use credits. Sudowrite starts at $19 a month with credits, and NovelCrafter's software is from $4 a month plus the AI vendor's charges.
Can I choose the AI model?
On NovelCrafter you connect any model you choose. On Sudowrite you pick among Muse, Ballad and 30+ other models. DreamGen and AI Dungeon name several models, and NovelAI's higher tiers add Opus-only models.
