Quick answer
- Ratings: nine of the eleven carry an App Store rating of 18+, and Choices and Chapters carry 16+. On Google Play nine are Mature 17+, Lore is 18+ and Tabou Stories is rated 13+ (the store's own word for that tier is
Teen
). - Terms: Winked, Tabou Stories and Whispers put the minimum age at 13, Love Sick at 16 and Lore at 17. Only Scripts, Chapters and Choices say 18 in plain terms.
- Sexual content: Apple's own label is Infrequent for seven of the eleven and Frequent for four (Romance Club, MeChat, Winked and Tabou Stories).
- Explicit? No app publishes a sentence saying its stories are explicit. Lore says
No graphic content
and Dorian's guidelines say explicit sexual content is not welcome. - Cost: premium choices are paid in diamonds, gems, keys or hearts, and none publishes the price of a choice. Subscriptions run from $7.99 a month (Tabou Stories) to $19.99 (Love Sick).
What the apps in this group are
These are chapter-by-chapter story apps where you pick between options and the plot responds: Romance Club, MeChat, Winked, Tabou Stories, Whispers, Scripts, Chapters, Choices, Love Sick, Lore and Dorian. They sell their stories in an in-app currency, and most are free to download. The interactive erotica hub sets out their currencies and what each says about the effect of a choice. This page asks a narrower question: how adult are they, according to what they publish?
The question matters because two things get blurred. A romance app rated 18+ and described as steamy sounds like an erotica app. The published evidence is thinner than that, and it differs from app to app.
Ratings, sexual-content labels and the apps' own words
Apple publishes a descriptor for each app on its listing called Sexual Content or Nudity, set to None, Infrequent or Frequent. It is the developer's answer to Apple's questionnaire, not an assessment by us. Here it sits beside the ratings and whatever each app says about explicitness.
| App | App Store | Google Play | Apple's sexual-content label | Its own words on explicit content |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 18+ | Mature 17+ | Frequent | No policy sentence found. A note on its Steam page says some stories include violent or sexual content, approached as much as possiblein ways suitable for the public aged 16+, and mentions depictions of attempted sexual coercion | |
| 18+ | Mature 17+ | Frequent | No policy sentence found. Copy speaks of love episodesand romantic narratives | |
| 18+ | Mature 17+ | Frequent | No policy sentence found. A dating-chat simulation; copy speaks of chatting with attractive singles | |
| 18+ | 13+ (Teen) | Frequent | No policy sentence found. Copy promises heart-pounding drama; explicitness is not confirmed | |
| 18+ | Mature 17+ | Infrequent | No policy sentence found. Google Play copy mentions passionate kisses | |
| 18+ | Mature 17+ | Infrequent | No policy sentence found. Google Play copy lists suggestively titled stories and a writer character who loves romance and smut | |
| 16+ | Mature 17+ | Infrequent | No policy sentence found. Copy leads with forbidden romanceand similar tropes | |
| 16+ | Mature 17+ | Infrequent | No policy sentence found. Google Play tags individual stories 17+ Mature | |
| 18+ | Mature 17+ | Infrequent | No policy sentence found. Copy says Say YES to your desires; explicit scenes are not confirmed | |
| 18+ | 18+ | Infrequent | Google Play copy: No graphic content | |
| 18+ | Mature 17+ | Infrequent | Guidelines: suggestive and mature themes are welcome where rated, explicit sexual content and illegal content are not |
Read the last column first. Nine of the eleven publish no sentence about explicit content in either direction, which is not the same as saying their stories are explicit or are not. Two publish a sentence that rules it out. None has a sentence we could quote saying the opposite. Where an app's copy is quoted above, it is the developer's marketing, and we have not read the stories.
The descriptor column is the most concrete number. Four apps, Romance Club, MeChat, Winked and Tabou Stories, tell Apple that sexual content is frequent. Seven tell Apple it is infrequent. Lore and Dorian set every descriptor to infrequent, including violence and profanity. An infrequent label does not mean there is no sexual content, and it does not tell you how explicit the occasional scene is.
Why an 18+ rating is not a promise
A store rating is a category of audience, not a description of scenes. Both stores' rules point the same way for apps that want to stay listed. Apple's guideline bans overtly sexual or pornographic material, defined as explicit descriptions or displays of sexual organs or activities intended to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or emotional feelings
, and requires icons and screenshots to suit a 4+ rating whatever the app holds. Google Play does not allow apps that contain or promote sexual content, with an exception for catalogues where such titles are a minor fraction. Our guide to why erotica apps disappear from the app store sets out both.
That is a reason, not proof, that mainstream romance apps lean on implication. What we can say is narrower: the apps publish ratings that run from 16+ to 18+, store labels that run from frequent to infrequent, and no promise of explicit scenes. A reader who wants a stated explicit policy will find it more easily on the web, where services such as Chyoa and Outfox Stories say so in writing; see browser interactive erotica.
The age terms underneath the ratings
The same apps often admit younger users in their own terms than their store ratings imply. Winked and Tabou Stories share Supercharge terms that set the minimum age at 13. Whispers names 13 in its privacy policy. Love Sick names 16, or under 16 with parental consent, and Lore names 17. Romance Club allows 18, or over 13 with a parent or guardian's consent. MeChat sets no floor and asks for a parent or guardian's permission, while Dorian points to the minimum age where you live. Scripts, Chapters and Choices say 18. These are the published figures, and we have not tested what any app does at sign-up. The hub's age table shows them beside the store ratings.
None of the eleven has a sentence saying that all characters are adults. That finding is about the pages we read, not about the stories. Services such as Chyoa, Erota and Pirr do publish one.
What you pay, in brief
Almost every app in the group is free to download and charges for premium choices. Where a monthly subscription is published, it runs from $7.99 (Tabou Stories, which also sells a $2.99 weekly plan), to $9.99 (MeChat), $12.99 (Lore), $14.99 (Choices VIP and the Scripts Romance Pass) and $19.99 (Love Sick). Winked and Whispers print no stated monthly plan we could price. Lore is the exception on the model: its pricing page says No Gems, No Paid Choices
, though every plan card on that page carries the words Coming Soon. Dorian is the other: creators set the price of their own choices, in hearts. Our guide to how story app credits work explains why the unit price matters more than the pack price.
Two romance apps with a different engine
Not every interactive romance story is pre-written. Pirr is an interactive fiction app where an AI model adapts the story line by line to your choices, with text only. It is rated 18+ on the App Store and Mature 17+ on Google Play, and its adult mode is an opt-in setting, off by default, that users switch on after confirming they are 18 or older. Its Code of Conduct says all characters involved in sexual content must be 18 or older. Smuthie sells custom spicy romance with choices at the end of each chapter, rated 16+ on the App Store, though its last update was in July 2025 and its listings never say whether explicit scenes exist. The AI side of this field is covered in AI interactive erotica.
Which one for which reader
- The clearest written content rule: Dorian, whose guidelines are explicit about what is excluded, and Lore, whose store copy says no graphic content.
- A public help centre for the currency: Choices, the best-documented currency in the group.
- No gems and no paid choices: Lore, with a published pricing page and no web version.
- The strongest store signal of mature content: Romance Club, MeChat, Winked and Tabou Stories, where Apple's label is Frequent.
- An opt-in adult mode that is off by default: Pirr.

FAQ
Are interactive romance apps explicit?
None of the eleven we cover publishes a sentence saying its stories are explicit. Two say the opposite: Lore's Google Play copy says No graphic content
and Dorian's guidelines exclude explicit sexual content. Four tell Apple that sexual content is frequent, and seven that it is infrequent.
Are Choices and Chapters rated 18+?
Not on the App Store, where both are rated 16+. Both are Mature 17+ on Google Play, and both state a minimum age of 18 in their terms.
Which interactive romance apps admit users aged 13?
Winked and Tabou Stories set the minimum age at 13 in their shared terms, and Whispers names 13 in its privacy policy. Romance Club allows over 13 with a parent or guardian's consent. All four carry an App Store rating of 18+.
Is there an interactive romance app with no gems or coins?
Lore says so on its pricing page: No Gems, No Paid Choices
. It sells weekly, monthly, yearly and season passes from $6.99 a week, and every card carries a Coming Soon label. We found no web version.
What does the Sexual Content or Nudity label mean?
It is a descriptor on the App Store listing that the developer sets to None, Infrequent or Frequent when rating the app. It describes the app as a whole, not a story, and does not say how explicit any scene is.
