AI Dungeon vs DreamGen

AI Dungeon and DreamGen both let you start free and both meter the paid tiers with credits, but they sell different things with them. AI Dungeon's paid plans begin at $14.99 a month and buy context, Memories and a credit bundle; DreamGen's list price starts at $7.83 and buys a context window plus access to premium and third-party models. The deeper split is disclosure: AI Dungeon names its company and documents a Mature setting, and DreamGen names no company at all.

Quick answer

  • Both start free. AI Dungeon's free tier, Wanderer, gives 9 story generators, 25 Memories, 4k of context on most models and no monthly credits. DreamGen's free product gives 200 monthly credits and 25 daily credits, with its context window and model access not stated anywhere we read.
  • Choose AI Dungeon if you want iPhone and Android apps, a documented Mature setting that needs an 18+ confirmation, and a named company behind it. Paid web tiers are $14.99, $29.99, $49.99 and $99.99 a month.
  • Choose DreamGen if you want a cheaper entry on the web, published credit pack prices and a written statement that private stories are not used for training unless you opt in. List prices are $7.83, $19.35 and $48.30 a month.
  • The difference in kind: AI Dungeon's Terms name Latitude, Inc. and a street address in Salt Lake City. DreamGen names no company: its Terms say the service is provided by a footnote that is empty in the page text, and its About page says only an independently run business.
  • Adult content: AI Dungeon allows it behind a Mature setting and publishes a detailed rule on characters under 18 with an in-play filter. DreamGen's Terms ban neither adult content nor permit it in so many words, and do bar sexual content involving fictional minors.

Both services put a model in front of you and let you drive a story: type what happens, the model continues. AI Dungeon frames it as a text adventure game and DreamGen as a story writer and role-play platform, and both let you build your own scenarios. The commercial shapes differ more than the products do. We did not subscribe to or play either, so this reads their pricing pages, terms, help centres and store listings as they stood in October 2026.

Content rulesBans sexual content involving people under 18, fictional characters included, with an in-play filterMinors: Terms section 4.2 (Prohibited Content): you agree not to use the Service to generate content that 'Depicts, describes, or promotes sexual content involving minors, including fictional minors'. The same section bars content that 'is or could reasonably be considered illegal in the United States, the countries of the European Free Trade Association, or in your own jurisdiction'. Users must be 18+ (section 2).

"Not confirmed" means the pages we read are silent, not that the answer is no. Two rows need a reading note. "Branching choices" is "No" for AI Dungeon because play is open-ended typing rather than authored branches, and empty for DreamGen because no page states either way. And "Explicit content" reads "yes" for AI Dungeon, from its Mature setting, and "not confirmed" for DreamGen, whose Terms restrict nothing but never say adult content is permitted. An absence of a ban is not a permission, and we do not record it as one.

AI Dungeon vs DreamGen on price

AI Dungeon's prices are monthly on its web pricing page. DreamGen's are list prices shown struck through, with a discount applied to a first purchase only, so the figures in the table are what you pay from the second month onwards.

At the entry point DreamGen is $7.16 a month cheaper, $7.83 against $14.99, and gives less context for it: 5,000 tokens against AI Dungeon's 8k. At the top ordinary tier the two nearly meet, $48.30 against $49.99 for 30,000 tokens against 32k. Token counts from different models are a rough yardstick rather than a ruling, since models do not count alike, so read these as scale. On AI Dungeon's own pages there is also a contradiction we print and do not resolve: the pricing page gives its $99.99 Ultimate tier 64k of context while the help page on membership benefits still says Mythic and Ultimate both get 32k. If that number decides a purchase, read the live page.

One oddity is worth naming on the DreamGen side. Advanced at $19.35 and Pro at $48.30 both list 2,250 monthly credits and 75 extra daily credits, so the $28.95 step between them buys context and discounts and no extra credits at all. The prices are also published as struck-through list prices with a first-month offer beside them, which is a presentation to read twice before assuming the lower figure recurs. The detail is on what AI Dungeon costs, and DreamGen has no pricing page of its own here because its figures sit on the review.

How the credits work, and what a credit costs

Both meter with credits and the credits do different jobs. At AI Dungeon they buy extra context on some models and image generation, they refresh each billing cycle, they do not expire and they accumulate. Extra credits can be bought separately, at a price not recorded on any page we read. At DreamGen credits meter premium and third-party models, with the first-party default model free to Pro users; monthly credits reset once a month, and extra daily credits are used only once the monthly allowance is gone and reset every day.

Only DreamGen publishes pack prices, so only DreamGen can be costed.

DreamGen credit packPriceCost per credit (our arithmetic)
Small, 750 credits$5.390.72 cents
Medium, 3,000 credits$18.290.61 cents
Large, 9,000 credits$51.790.58 cents

The large pack is about 20% cheaper per credit than the small one, matching the page's own "Save 20%" callout, and the medium pack about 15% cheaper, matching its "Save 15%". Nothing equivalent can be worked out for AI Dungeon, because no price for extra credits was recorded. One caveat: those packs live in the pricing page's embedded data rather than as visible cards, so a reader may never see them. The mechanics are set out in how story app credits work.

One more phrase needs care. DreamGen's paid tiers advertise unlimited access to basic and premium models with an asterisk, the footnote defining it did not render on the page we read, and the page's own data shows monthly token caps. We therefore read "unlimited" as capped and cannot say at what.

Adult content, and the rules on characters under 18

AI Dungeon documents its position in detail. An account-wide AI Safety Setting has three levels, and the top one is described this way: Using the Mature level will not limit the AI from generating mature, violent, or triggering content. You must confirm that you are 18+ when enabling this level. That confirmation is a declaration, not a check, and whether Mature works on the free tier is not stated either way. Published adventures follow Community Guidelines that rate explicit sexual content Unrated (18+), while private and unlisted adventures are not moderated beyond what the guidelines call the Walls Approach. Some categories stay unpublishable whatever the rating, among them bestiality, necrophilia, incest and non-consensual sexual content.

DreamGen says far less. Its Terms bar illegal content, contain no sexual-content ban and never state that adult content is permitted, so the field stays "not confirmed". The nearest thing to a position is on the About page, which says the service was founded on the belief that people should have the freedom to express and entertain themselves in any way they choose, as long as it's done in private and no other person is actively involved, exposed, or harmed in the process. That is a statement of intent rather than a content rule, and the in-app Community Guidelines that govern published content need a login we did not use.

On characters under 18 both do publish a rule, which is the clearest point of agreement on this page. DreamGen's Terms, section 4.2, bar using the service to generate content that Depicts, describes, or promotes sexual content involving minors, including fictional minors. AI Dungeon bans the same thing in more detail and backs it with an in-play filter it calls Sexual Content Involving Minors, which shows a content-not-supported message even on the Mature setting. Neither publishes a sentence saying all characters are adults, and both rules work from the other side, by naming what cannot be written. The wider picture is on whether AI story apps allow NSFW.

The age floors differ. AI Dungeon's Terms set a general minimum of 13, with 18 confirmed to switch Mature on. DreamGen's Terms require users to be at least 18 and of the age of majority, self-declared, with no check described. Its Terms are governed by Swiss law.

Apps, operators and what each says about your stories

AI Dungeon runs on the web, on iPhone and on Android, under the name AI Dungeon: RPG & Story Maker from Latitude, Inc., rated 13+ on both stores. Its App Store purchase list carries legacy tier names that cannot be matched to the web tiers, and the Shadow Tiers are not sold in the apps. DreamGen is web only: no store listing was found on either platform, so there is no app price to compare.

The operator question is the sharpest asymmetry here. AI Dungeon's Terms name Latitude, Inc. with a street address in Salt Lake City. DreamGen's Terms and Privacy Policy say the service is provided by a bracketed footnote that is empty in the page text we read, the About page offers only an independently run business, and the single point of contact is a support email address. Anyone who wants to know which company holds their stories can answer that question at one of these two services and not at the other.

What each says about the stories themselves runs the other way. DreamGen's Terms and Privacy FAQ states that private stories are not used to train models unless the user opts in, which is off by default, and that automated moderation scans private content. Those are the service's own statements, which we report and have not tested. AI Dungeon links a privacy policy from its home page whose contents we did not record, so we can say nothing about how it treats adventures. Neither card descriptor is recorded, so if the charge line matters, read what erotica apps look like on a bank statement first.

On cancelling, AI Dungeon puts the route under the profile picture, then Settings, then Membership on the web; refunds are discretionary and there are none for partially used periods. DreamGen is cancelled on the account management page or by emailing support, and its Terms say all purchases are final and non-refundable except as consumer law requires.

FAQ

Are AI Dungeon and DreamGen free?

Both have a free tier. AI Dungeon's Wanderer gives 9 story generators, 25 Memories and 4k of context on most models, with no monthly credits. DreamGen's free product gives 200 monthly credits and 25 daily credits, though its context window and model access are not stated anywhere we read.

How much does DreamGen cost?

Its list prices are $7.83 for Starter, $19.35 for Advanced and $48.30 for Pro a month, each shown struck through beside a first-month discount of $6.26, $15.48 and $33.81. The discounts apply to a first purchase only, so the list price is what recurs.

Which is cheaper?

DreamGen at the entry point, by $7.16 a month, though it gives 5,000 tokens of context against AI Dungeon's 8k. At the top ordinary tier they nearly meet: $48.30 for 30,000 tokens against $49.99 for 32k.

Does DreamGen allow NSFW?

Its Terms neither ban adult content nor state that it is permitted, so the answer is not confirmed; an absence of a ban is not a permission. Its About page does make a general creative-freedom statement about private use. AI Dungeon, by contrast, allows adult content through a Mature setting that requires an 18+ confirmation.

Do DreamGen credits expire?

Monthly credits reset once a month and the extra daily credits reset every day, and are only used once the monthly allowance is gone. The three credit packs cost $5.39 for 750, $18.29 for 3,000 and $51.79 for 9,000, which by our arithmetic is 0.72, 0.61 and 0.58 cents a credit.

Who runs DreamGen?

No company name is published. Its Terms and Privacy Policy refer to a provider through a footnote that is empty in the page text we read, and the About page says only that it is an independently run business, with a support email as the contact. AI Dungeon names Latitude, Inc. and a Salt Lake City address.

Final verdict

AI Dungeon is the better documented service: a named company, a free tier whose contents are published, apps on both phone platforms, a written adult-content setting and a rating system for what gets published. DreamGen is the cheaper way in on the web, with costed credit packs and a clear statement that private stories stay out of training unless you opt in, and it asks you to accept that no company name appears anywhere on its pages. Both publish a rule on characters under 18 and neither states that all characters are adults. We have not played either, so this is a reading of their pages and not of their output.
