AI Dungeon Cost: Free Tier, Paid Plans and Shadow Tiers

What does AI Dungeon cost at each tier?

AI Dungeon cost depends on one question: how much of your story you need the model to remember. The tiers are priced by context length and Memories, and the free tier is a real one. The table below mixes two kinds of row: the web tiers (Free, Journey to Ultimate and the three Shadow Tiers) come from the pricing page, and the rows starting "App Store" are in-app purchase items from the US App Store listing.

The App Store shows only the first ten items, several under legacy names, and none with a billing period or contents. That is why the rows cannot be matched to tiers.

What each step up buys

Our arithmetic from the web prices. On the pricing page context doubles at every step: 4k on the free tier, then 8k, 16k, 32k and 64k for Ultimate. Price rises with it:

• Journey to Legend: price doubles ($14.99 to $29.99), context doubles (8k to 16k).
• Legend to Mythic: price rises by two thirds ($29.99 to $49.99), context doubles to 32k.
• Mythic to Ultimate: price doubles ($49.99 to $99.99), and the pricing page lists 64k, though the help page still says Mythic and Ultimate get 32k. Both pages are official and we have not resolved them.

Per thousand tokens of context, Journey and Legend work out at about $1.87, and Mythic and Ultimate at about $1.56 if the 64k figure is right. Credits barely move: 760 credits for $14.99 is about 51 a dollar, Legend 1,650 for $29.99 is 55, Mythic 2,750 for $49.99 is 55 and Ultimate 5,200 for $99.99 is 52. So the choice between tiers is about context and Memories (100, 200, 400 and 800), not about credits.

Credits: what they are and what they buy

Paid tiers add monthly credits: +760, +1,650, +2,750 and +5,200. The pricing-page FAQ says credits refresh each billing cycle, do not expire and accumulate. They buy extra context on some models (for example Dynamic Large: 4k tokens +4k/credit) and images, at a price per image that depends on the model, from 3 credits up to 60. With no credits, only one image model, SDXL Lightning, shows as Unlimited. Extra credits can be bought separately, but their price was not recorded, so we cannot say how much a top-up costs.

The Shadow Tiers

Banshee, Reaper and Apocalypse sit above the ladder and are sold on the web only, never in the iOS or Android apps. The page prints $246.66, $496.66 and $996.66 with no currency code or period; the help page says monthly plans only, with no annual option. They list 8,400, 12,500 and 18,500 credits and 1,200, 1,600 and 2,000 Memories, and Banshee lists context up to 128k.

Our arithmetic: that is about 34, 25 and 19 credits a dollar, fewer than the 51 to 55 of the ordinary tiers. So the extra money does not buy credits at a better rate. It buys Memories and context. A year of Banshee is $2,959.92.

Web price, App Store price and the gap

One item lines up: "AI Dungeon Champion" at $14.99 is the old name of Journey, whose web price is also $14.99. The other items are "Champion" at $41.99, "Adventurer" at $9.99, $28.49, $53.99 and $92.99, and legacy Legend ($29.99), Traveler ($4.99) and Adventurer ($9.99). The listing shows no billing period for any, so we cannot say whether the apps charge more than the web for Legend, Mythic or Ultimate. Stores take a cut of in-app sales, which is the usual reason prices differ, but we only have one matching pair here and it is equal. Google Play shows only a range, $0.99 to $949.99 per item.

Free tier, trial, cancelling and refunds

Free tier versus trial. The free tier is standing and has no end date. The trial is separate: one week, on Journey and Legend, per the memberships page, and the trial page still says Champion and Legend. Premium benefits end when a trial is cancelled. The pages we read do not say whether a card is needed to start it.

Renewal and annual terms. The subscriptions are auto-renewing. The help page says 6-month and 12-month terms are discounted, but the rendered pricing page shows no term toggle and no discounted prices, so we have no annual figure. For reference, twelve monthly payments are $179.88 for Journey, $359.88 for Legend, $599.88 for Mythic and $1,199.88 for Ultimate.

Cancelling. On the web: profile picture, then Settings, then Membership. If you subscribed through Apple, you manage it with Apple. See our guide to cancelling a story app subscription.

Refunds. The terms say There are no refunds for partially used periods. Someone who unintentionally keeps a subscription without using the service may email a request, reviewed at the company's sole discretion. Apple payments can only be refunded by Apple. For Google Play, support may be able to request or facilitate a refund.

Is it worth paying? Three kinds of player

• A casual player: the free tier. Its 4k context is the thing to test before paying.
• A player whose story outgrows the memory: Journey is the first rung, and its one-week trial lets you test the larger memory first.
• A heavy user of images: the monthly credits matter, and the higher tiers list more image models as Unlimited, but model names and per-image costs change, so read the pricing page the day you buy.
