Erotica Apps

Tapas vs Webnovel

Tapas and Webnovel are both serial platforms where episodes unlock with a virtual currency, and each publishes the half of the deal the other hides. Webnovel prints its coin pack prices, from 50 coins at $0.99 to 5,000 at $99.99, but not what a chapter costs. Tapas prints neither, and instead publishes exactly what it pays a creator: a 30% fee on ad revenue, PayPal only, a $25 minimum balance.

Quick answer

  • Choose Tapas if you want comics and webtoons beside novels and a free route that needs no purchase at all: episodes unlock on a timer, with exclusive free episodes dropping every three hours.
  • Choose Webnovel if you want translated and original web novels, mostly fantasy, and a published price for the currency. Coin packs run from 50 coins at $0.99 to 5,000 at $99.99 on the US App Store.
  • The difference in kind: each publishes the number the other withholds. Webnovel prices its coins but not its chapters. Tapas prices neither, because the Ink page needs a sign-in, yet it is the only one of the two that publishes what a creator is paid.
  • Coin arithmetic (ours): every Webnovel pack works out between 1.98 and 2.00 cents a coin, so buying the biggest pack saves nothing per coin. The smallest pack is fractionally the cheapest.
  • Age is alike: both sets of terms say 13, both apps are rated 16+ on the App Store and both sit in Google Play's 13+ tier. Neither states that all characters are adults.

These two sit in the same business: a long serial, a free run of episodes, then a wall you pay to pass. Tapas leads with webcomics, manga and webtoons alongside novels, and Webnovel with translated and original fiction that leans heavily on eastern and western fantasy. We have not subscribed to or installed either, so what follows reads their terms, help pages, guidelines and store listings as they stood in October 2026.

"Not confirmed" means the pages we read are silent, not that the answer is no. A great deal is silent here, and on this pair the silences are the comparison, so each section below says which of the two publishes the figure and which does not.

What Webnovel charges, and what the arithmetic shows

Webnovel is the only one of the two with published prices. The US App Store listed seven coin packs on 27 October 2026, along with three subscription items. Coins unlock chapters, and the help centre also names Fast Pass, Privilege, Batch Unlock and Golden Tickets, whose answers load only on a click and which we did not read.

Coin packPriceCost per coin (our arithmetic)
50 coins$0.991.98 cents
150 coins$2.991.99 cents
250 coins$4.992.00 cents
500 coins$9.992.00 cents
1,000 coins$19.992.00 cents
2,500 coins$49.992.00 cents
5,000 coins$99.992.00 cents

That is the useful finding on this platform. Coin economies usually reward the big pack, and this one does not: the spread across the whole range is two hundredths of a cent, and the $0.99 pack is fractionally the cheapest per coin of the seven. Spending $99.99 instead of $0.99 buys a hundred times the coins and no discount whatever. What none of it tells you is the coin cost of a chapter, which is not published on any page we read, so there is no cost per chapter here and any figure quoted elsewhere was not taken from Webnovel's own pages.

Three subscription items sat on the same listing: Membership_Monthly at $9.99, a plain Membership at $4.99 whose billing period is not stated, and a Weekly short story membership at $19.99. None of the three has its contents described. The monthly item comes to $119.88 over twelve payments. The weekly item is the one to look at twice: if it renews every week as its name says, fifty-two payments of $19.99 would be $1,039.48 a year, which is our arithmetic on a published price and not a figure Webnovel states. The App Store shows at most ten purchases per listing, so the list may be partial. Our page on what Webnovel costs keeps the current figures, and how story app credits work explains the model in general.

What Tapas charges, which is not published

Tapas sells Ink, its virtual currency, to unlock episodes early and to tip creators. The Terms describe it plainly: You may also be awarded virtual "Ink," "Coins," or other currency ... These currencies have no "real world" value, but may be exchanged by you for designated items. What an Ink pack costs, and how much Ink an episode takes, are not published on any page we read. The Ink page redirects to a sign-in, and the iOS listing carries no in-app purchase list at all. A Premium Program help article exists and also needs a sign-in, so whether Tapas runs a subscription, and at what price, is not confirmed either.

So there is no price comparison to make on this pair, only a difference in disclosure. A reader can work out what a Webnovel coin costs before creating an account, and cannot work out what a Tapas episode costs without one.

Free reading at each

Tapas has the clearer free route, and it is the better documented of the two. Many series run on Wait Until Free: the Google Play text promises exclusive free episodes dropping every three hours and explains Simply wait for your timer to run out, and you can read the next episode for free. The apps add perks the web does not, among them Gift Passes, free Ink and weekly Fortune Cookies with random bonus Ink. Those are the app's own words for what it gives away, and they cost nothing but patience.

Webnovel's free tier is real but thinly described. The pattern is a run of free chapters and then coins, and the help centre mentions free Coins and Batch Unlock, but how many chapters are free, and on which titles, is not published on the pages we read. If you want services that give something away without a card, our round-up of erotica apps without a subscription is the place to start.

Tapas vs Webnovel for writers

Here the disclosure runs the other way, and the gap is wide enough to decide where a serial writer posts.

Tapas publishes figures. Its Terms set the Ad Revenue Program fee in one sentence: You hereby agree to a fee of thirty percent of revenue (30%) for our Ad Revenue Program. Tapas Entertainment covers all third party credit card transaction expenses. Applicants must be over 18. A Support Program lets readers tip in Ink, and the creator takes 100% of the tip after third-party fees. There is an Originals Program, which sells on the mobile app and may need a separate agreement, and a merchandising arrangement with Printful. Payment is by PayPal and nothing else, the minimum balance is $25.00, and a transfer takes three to five business days. That is a complete picture of the money by the standards of this niche.

Webnovel publishes almost none of it. The App Store text invites writers to enter contests and publish your novel with our matchmaking system, and the author portal, Inkstone, redirects to a login. Royalty rates, payout methods, thresholds, exclusivity and the author contract all sit behind that login. The one creator term that is public is in the Terms, section 6.1: You retain copyright and any other proprietary rights that you may hold in the User Content that you post, with Webnovel taking a limited non-exclusive licence only through our Services. So a writer can learn what rights they keep and not what they will be paid. The wider field is in how erotica platforms pay writers and what platforms charge writers.

One more thing a writer of explicit serials needs to read before choosing Tapas. Its creators site says the platform is subject to following rules set by app stores and partners, which means we are unable to promote and host independent series containing mature content, and it recommends publishing more mature scenes elsewhere. That is the platform telling writers in advance where its line is. Nothing comparable is published for Webnovel authors on the pages we read.

Two content rules, and how old they are

Neither platform is an erotica service, and both say so in their own way. The Tapas guidelines state it flatly: Any and all content intended for sexual gratification is not allowed. A second sentence adds that a novel's purpose should not be solely to provide erotic satisfaction. The website nonetheless carries a Mature tab and markets Mature Versions Available, so the written rule and the marketing point different ways. We set that out in full on Tapas against Wattpad and will not repeat it here.

Webnovel's limit is a list in the Terms rather than a sexual-content policy. Section 8(c) bars posting content that a reasonable person could deem to be objectionable, profane, indecent, pornographic, harassing, threatening, embarrassing, hateful, or otherwise inappropriate. The phrase "sexually explicit" does not appear, so the written limit is "indecent" and "pornographic", both undefined, while the App Store listing carries an infrequent sexual content advisory at 16+.

The dates matter as much as the wording. The Tapas Content and Community Guidelines were last modified on 9 March 2022, and the Webnovel Terms were last updated on 14 January 2019. Both are old enough that a writer should check the live page before committing a manuscript. Tapas does publish one rule Webnovel does not: AI generated content is not allowed on Tapas. Webnovel's position on AI writing is not confirmed. Where erotica is refused outright is covered on platforms that ban erotica.

Apps, ads and who is behind each

Both run on iPhone, Android and the web, both are free to download, and both carry ads and in-app purchases. Each shows 10M+ downloads on Google Play, with 126K reviews for Tapas and 451K for Webnovel. Those are the store's own ranges and review counts, not reader numbers.

The operator lines are worth a glance. Webnovel's is consistent: Cloudary Holdings Limited on the App Store, Cloudary on Google Play. Tapas carries three names across its surfaces. The Terms say the services are provided by Tapas Entertainment, Inc., the Google Play developer is Tapas Entertainment Inc., and the iOS seller line reads Radish Media, Inc. with a copyright line for Tapas Media, Inc. Radish was a separate serial app that closed at the end of 2025, as our note on serial fiction apps that shut down records. We report the three names and do not reconcile them.

On cancelling, only Webnovel publishes a route: subscriptions are auto-renewing, and you cancel through the Apple ID subscription settings on an iPhone or through the Google Play store on Android, not inside the app. Fees are non-refundable unless the law requires otherwise. Tapas has a Refund Policy article in the same help section that we did not read, and no cancellation steps are recorded. The general steps are on our cancellation guide.

FAQ

Is Tapas or Webnovel free?

Both are free to download and both carry ads. Tapas unlocks many episodes free on a timer and gives app users Gift Passes and weekly bonus Ink. Webnovel offers free chapters and then charges coins, though how many chapters are free is not published on the pages we read.

How much do Webnovel coins cost?

On the US App Store: 50 coins $0.99, 150 $2.99, 250 $4.99, 500 $9.99, 1,000 $19.99, 2,500 $49.99 and 5,000 $99.99. By our arithmetic each pack works out at 1.98 to 2.00 cents a coin, so the big packs give no bulk discount. The coin cost of a chapter is not published.

What does a chapter cost on each?

Neither publishes it. Webnovel prices the coins and not the chapters; Tapas publishes neither its Ink pack prices nor the Ink cost of an episode, because the Ink page requires a sign-in.

Does Tapas pay writers, and how much?

Yes, and it says so in writing. The Ad Revenue Program carries a 30% fee to Tapas, the Support Program lets the creator keep 100% of a tip after third-party fees, payment is by PayPal only, and the minimum balance is $25.00. Webnovel's author terms sit behind the Inkstone login and are not confirmed.

Does Webnovel allow explicit content?

Its Terms bar content a reasonable person could deem "indecent" or "pornographic", without defining either, and never use the phrase "sexually explicit". That text was last updated on 14 January 2019, so check the live page before relying on it.

Is the Webnovel app on my phone the same Webnovel?

Check the seller. The app covered here is "Webnovel - Read Novels, Manga" from Cloudary Holdings Limited. A different iOS app called "Webnovel - Romance Love Novels", from the seller SITRO, TOV, is a separate service whose own listing calls it LuvNovel.

Final verdict

Tapas suits a reader who will wait rather than pay, and a creator who wants the fee, the payout method and the threshold written down before posting. Webnovel suits a reader who wants a published price list and a deep fantasy catalogue, and who accepts that the cost of a chapter is not stated anywhere. Neither is a home for explicit fiction, and both lean on policy texts dated 2022 and 2019, which is the single best reason to read the live pages before you spend.
