Quick answer
- Catalogue: only three of the eight say how big the library is. Literotica claims more than 500,000 stories, Dorian 11,000+ games and Roma 10,000+ books, all company claims and not counts. Choices, Romance Club, Lore, Chapters and MeChat publish no number.
- Reading experience: keys on a timer at Choices, hearts and sapphires at Dorian, coins and offline downloads at Roma, a flat pass at Lore, and online-only play at Chapters and MeChat. Literotica is a website with nothing to buy.
- Documented first: Choices is first because its currencies and free part are explained in a public help centre. Romance Club has 50M+ Google Play downloads and no public help page.
- Adult is a store label: the App Store rates Choices and Chapters 16+, five of the others 18+, and Literotica has no listing. None of the seven apps publishes a sentence saying its stories are explicit; only Literotica, a website, does.
- Not in this list: Litero, which appears in the results for this search. It has no record of ours, so we cannot rank it.
What adult means in an app store listing
An adult story app is, in practice, a story app that a store has rated for older readers, or one whose own pages say it is for adults. That is a narrower claim than it sounds. Store ratings come from the developer's answers to a questionnaire, and Apple's own descriptors, which we quote, say how often a theme such as sexual content appears in an app, not how explicit it gets. Our guide to why erotica apps behave oddly in the app stores explains the rules behind this. The result is that some apps in this list are rated 18+ and are mostly romance, while one is a free website with no rating at all and an explicit-by-policy library.
When we read the Google results for this search on October 27, 2026, they were store pages (Litero and Romance Club on the App Store, Choices on Google Play), a Reddit thread on Romance Club, Literotica's own Android page, interactive-story blogs and a Quora question. That is the mix this page answers: story apps first, and the library of a website beside them. It is one of the lists in our best-of section.
How we picked, and what we could not test
We ranked on four things a service publishes, in this order.
- Catalogue evidence. A stated library size, a genre list or an update rhythm. A claim counts as evidence only when we print it as a claim.
- Reading experience. How a chapter works: what unlocks the next one, whether you need a connection, whether there is a web version or offline reading.
- The free part, described. Whether a page says what you get before you pay.
- Cost, where it can be known. Plan prices and pack prices from official pages and store listings, read on October 27, 2026.
Explicitness is deliberately last, and it is covered in its own section, because the evidence for it is thin and because it is not what separates these apps in use. The order is a judgement from published facts and not a calculation. A service with a gap is placed lower and the entry names the gap.
We did not install any of these apps, read any story or play any choice. We cannot say how good a story is, how long a chapter takes, or how an age prompt looks. What the price of a premium choice is, in most of these apps, appears only inside the app, so we say it is not published.

Choices is a choice-based story app from Pixelberry. Chapters unlock with keys, premium choices and outfits cost diamonds, and a VIP subscription is listed at $14.99 on the App Store. What sets it apart is that the rules are public. A help centre says there is a soft cap of 2 keys, that a timer runs when you have less than one, and that diamonds are earned by finishing a chapter for the first time, watching certain ads and completing tasks or offers. You can play without an account. We set out the costs in how much Choices costs.
It is first because it is the one app here whose free part and currencies are explained on a page you can read, and its Android listing has 50M+ downloads. Watch for: the diamond price of a premium choice is not published, the VIP article is nearly two years old, the App Store rating is 16+ against terms that set 18, and the catalogue is large and was not read title by title.

Dorian is a platform for creator-made branching romance games: romantasy, dark romance, dating sims and horror romance. Its home page claims 11,000+ games and 1M+ players, which are the company's own figures. Premium choices are paid in hearts, which are bought and support creators, or sapphires, which are free and earned by logging in or winning events. Creators set the price of each choice, so no platform price exists, and its creators page promises a 50/50 revenue share.
The community guidelines say Every project declares a content rating and content warnings
and Suggestive and mature themes are welcome where rated; explicit sexual content and illegal content are not.
The App Store rates it 18+ and Google Play Mature 17+, with 1M+ downloads. Watch for: there is no play on the website, hearts and sapphires spent on a choice cannot be refunded, the terms set no number for the minimum age, and the user-made catalogue has not been audited.

Literotica
Largest library, free, and no store app
Free
- Type
- Free community site for adult stories (web only)

Literotica is the largest library of stories in this list by its own claim: more than 500,000, with audio and interactive story games, all free to read without an account. Story Games let the reader choose a path through the story, and the same all-characters-over-18 rule applies to them. Works generated by AI cannot be published.
It is third because it is a website. Our check on October 27 found no Literotica app on the App Store or Google Play. Its own Android page still turns up in these search results, and when we read it on October 28 it offered an APK download from literotica.com and told users to allow installs from sources other than the Play Store. The page's copyright line reads 1998-2017 and the version is listed as 2.1, so we cannot say it is kept up. We did not download it. Installing an app from outside Google Play skips that store's review, so the browser version, which needs nothing installed, is the safer way to start. Offline reading is not confirmed.

Romance Club is a choice-based romance app from Your Story Interactive, with 50M+ Google Play downloads and an App Store rating of 18+. Its store copy says Every story has multiple endings!
and Our games are free!
, and does not say what the free part holds. Currencies are diamonds, tea and spins, plus a Gold pass; the App Store lists a Fistful of diamonds at $4.99 up to a Barrel at $49.99 without counts.
It is fourth because nothing is explained. There is no public help page, so what each currency buys and what a premium choice costs are not published. The developer's note on its Steam page says some stories include violent or sexual content, approached in ways suitable for the public aged 16+
, and its terms from 2017 allow users over 13 with a parent or guardian's consent. There is no web player. The comparison with Choices sets the two side by side.

Roma is a serialised romance reader for iPhone and Android with an author programme. Its website FAQ claims over 10,000 books. Each book has free preview chapters, and later chapters unlock with coins, which can be earned from daily rewards or bought: 500 coins for $4.99, 1,200 for $9.99, 2,700 for $19.99 and 6,000 for $39.99. There are also weekly, monthly and annual coin plans and an Unlimited Reading monthly item at $17.99. Both the store text and the FAQ say chapters can be downloaded.
It ranks fifth because the cost of a chapter in coins is not published, the App Store prints only a rotating ten items, and the Terms are Apple's standard licence with no content policy of their own. The App Store lists advertising. The App Store rates it 18+ and Google Play Mature 17+, with 10K+ Android downloads.

Lore is an interactive story app with human-written stories and an AI chat layer where characters text you back. Its pricing page lists a weekly pass at $6.99, monthly at $12.99, yearly at $99.99 and a three-month Season Pass at $29.99, each with a 3-day free trial, and says No Gems, No Paid Choices
. How much is free depends on the store: the App Store says the first two chapters of every story are free, and the Google Play text says the first chapter, about 20 to 45 minutes of play.
It is sixth because the record is awkward. Every plan card on the pricing page carries the words Coming Soon
, the App Store list still shows a 2000-message pack at $9.99 and two extra story paths at $4.99, and Android has only 1K+ downloads. We found no web version. The Google Play copy says No graphic content
, and the privacy policy lists training its AI on anonymised chat data among the purposes.

Chapters is a choice-based romance app from Crazy Maple Studio. The main Google Play listing has 10M+ downloads, and the store copy lists forbidden romance, Mafia stories, contract marriages and second chances. Diamonds and tickets pay for choices and episodes: 20 diamonds for $1.99, 5 tickets for $1.99, 550 diamonds for $39.99, a VIP item at $9.99 and a DayPass at $0.99.
It is seventh because both stores say it is an online game and requires an internet connection to play
, and because there is no public help centre, so the rules for tickets and VIP are not published. The App Store rating is 16+, the terms set 18, and its Writing Room lets creators publish stories, with no payment terms in the pages we read.

MeChat tells its stories as chat conversations, and characters may send you voice messages. It is free to play, with gems from $0.99 to $19.99, a weekly subscription at $4.99 and a monthly one at $9.99, and nothing stated about what the subscriptions include. The App Store rates it 18+ and lists sexual content as a frequent descriptor. Google Play has 10M+ downloads.
It is last because its store copy says it is an online game that needs an internet connection, and because no help page explains the gems. The terms set no minimum age and ask for a parent or guardian's permission and supervision for anyone who is not a legal adult. It is not the same product as MeChat - AI Friends, which is a different developer's app.
How big each library claims to be
Library size is the first thing a reader asks and the thing these services say least. These are the figures printed on each service's own pages, none of which we have counted.
| Service | What it says about size | Where |
|---|---|---|
| More than 500,000 stories, 100,000 authors | About page | |
| 11,000+ games, 1M+ players | Home page | |
| Over 10,000 books across all romance subgenres | Website FAQ; the App Store says thousands of serialised novels | |
| No figure published | Store copy and help centre | |
| No figure published | Store copy | |
| No figure published | Store copy and pricing page | |
| No figure published; genres named | Store copy | |
| No figure published | Store copy |
Two other apps in our records do print a figure and are not ranked here. Love 365, a Voltage otome app, says Over 10,000 episodes, stories, and situations
, and Love Island: The Game gives 11 seasons on the App Store and 13 on Google Play, which disagree. A big number tells you the shelf is long, not that it holds what you want.
What reading looks like in each app
The next table uses each service's own record. Not confirmed means the pages we read are silent, and for web version it usually means we found no web player.
| App | Free tier | Offline reading | Web version | iPhone app | Android app | Store age rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yes | Not confirmed | Not confirmed | Yes | Yes | App Store 16+; Google Play: Mature 17+ | |
| Yes | Not confirmed | No | Yes | Yes | App Store 18+; Google Play: Mature 17+ | |
| Yes | Not confirmed | Yes | No | An APK on its own site, not a Play Store listing | Not confirmed | |
| Not confirmed | Not confirmed | Not confirmed | Yes | Yes | App Store 18+; Google Play: Mature 17+ | |

What you pay to keep going differs more than what you read:
| Service | What unlocks the next chapter | The free part | Subscription |
|---|---|---|---|
| Choices | Keys on a timer; diamonds for premium choices | Soft cap of 2 keys, timer, free diamonds | VIP, $14.99 a month (App Store) |
| Dorian | Hearts (bought) or sapphires (free); creators set prices | Free sapphires | None listed |
| Literotica | Nothing: free to read | Everything | None |
| Romance Club | Diamonds, tea, spins; contents not stated | Not described | Gold pass, $9.99, period not stated |
| Roma | Coins; chapter cost not published | Preview chapters, daily rewards | Unlimited Reading, $17.99 a month |
| Lore | A pass; no paid choices | First chapter or two | $12.99 a month, 3-day trial |
| Chapters | Diamonds and tickets; costs not published | Not described | VIP, $9.99, period not stated |
| MeChat | Gems; cost not published | Not described | $4.99 a week or $9.99 a month |
Sums on coins are in our pricing section. The short version: with Chapters, Romance Club and MeChat the pack prices are printed but the price of one chapter is not, so no price per chapter can be worked out, and we do not estimate one.
How explicit are they?
Last, as promised. None of the seven apps publishes a sentence saying its stories are explicit, and the store descriptors are the nearest evidence. Apple lists Sexual Content or Nudity as frequent for Romance Club and MeChat and as infrequent for the other five. Lore's Google Play copy says No graphic content
, and Dorian's guidelines exclude explicit sexual content. Literotica is explicit by written policy, with a footer that says Characters in all stories are over 18
, and none of the seven apps prints such a sentence. We looked for one on each app's store listings and terms, and did not find it.
If explicit text is what you came for, these apps are the wrong shelf for most of it, and the page to open is best erotica apps. Our section on interactive romance apps compares the ratings and terms of the choice apps in more detail.
Also covered, and not ranked
Four more choice apps have pages of their own and did not make the eight, mostly because another app covers the same ground with a better record. Scripts publishes its Romance Pass at $14.99 a month with a list of perks, has writer tools and is online only. Love Sick has a female-lead catalogue and a $19.99 monthly Premium Features plan. Winked is a dating-chat simulation whose FAQ explains how free diamonds are earned, and Tabou Stories sells an unlimited-tickets plan at $2.99 a week or $7.99 a month. Whispers offers werewolf, mafia and billionaire romance for gems. Romance apps whose terms ban explicit text altogether are on best romance reading apps.
Litero is the other name in these results. It is an iPhone app that appears in the App Store listings for this search, and we have no research record for it, so we neither rank nor describe it.
Free against paid
Almost all of these are free to download and say nothing, or very little, about what stays free. The exceptions are Choices, which describes its key timer and free diamonds, Dorian, with free sapphires, Roma, with preview chapters, and Lore, with its first chapters and a trial. Literotica is the only one that is free all the way through. For the full sort, our page on free adult story apps looks at the free part of 15 apps.
FAQ
What is an adult story app?
An app of stories rated for older readers or described by its own pages as adult, usually romance. The App Store labels most of these 18+, but the label measures how often sexual content appears, not how explicit it is. Only Literotica, a website, is explicit by written policy.
Which adult story apps are free?
All of the apps are free to download. Choices gives keys on a timer and free diamonds, Dorian gives free sapphires, Roma gives preview chapters and daily rewards, and Lore gives its first chapters and a 3-day trial. Literotica is free all the way through.
Is there a Literotica app?
Not in the app stores that we could find on October 27, 2026. Literotica's own Android page offers an APK from its website, but its copyright line reads 1998-2017 and we cannot say it is maintained. On iPhone and Android the site works in the browser.
Which story app has the biggest library?
By its own claim Literotica, with more than 500,000 stories, then Dorian with 11,000+ games and Roma with over 10,000 books. These are company claims, and Choices, Romance Club, Lore, Chapters and MeChat publish no figure.
Do these apps work offline?
Roma says chapters can be downloaded. Chapters and MeChat say they need an internet connection. For the others, offline play is not confirmed on the pages we read.
