Quick answer
- The rule: a subscription beats coins when the chapters you unlock in a month exceed the plan price divided by the price of one chapter. A flat fee caps the bill and coins do not, so for anyone reading most days a flat plan usually wins, provided it covers what you want to read.
- The plan in coins: $9.99 equals about 1,000 Dreame or GoodNovel coins and about 500 Webnovel coins (our arithmetic). Divide that by the coins a chapter asks, which is shown only inside the app. That quotient is the number of chapters a month at which the plan breaks even.
- Not every plan is a flat fee. Tabou Stories' plan is unlimited tickets. Scripts and Love Sick sell discounts and bonus diamonds. Chapters VIP, Whispers VIP, GoodNovel's weekly items and Webnovel's memberships state no contents, so they cannot be compared at all.
- Weekly plans compound: at MeChat, Tabou Stories and Epictos, two weekly payments are still under the monthly price and a third is over it.
- Choose coins for a few chapters or one book; choose a subscription for daily reading, once its contents are published. The terms of Dreame, GoodNovel, Webnovel, Wattpad and Kindle+ refuse refunds on both coins and plans.
The two models solve different problems. A subscription is a flat fee for time, so the bill is known in advance and the risk is paying for months you do not use. Credit-based reading is a fee per unit, in an in-app currency called coins, diamonds, gems, keys, hearts or tickets, so you only pay for what you open and the risk is not knowing the bill. This comparison is about models, not products, and every figure comes from the pricing pages and listings behind our erotica app pricing section, checked on October 27, 2026. We did not subscribe to or buy from any service.
Subscription vs credit-based story apps: the break-even sum
Three numbers decide it, and only two are public. The plan price is on the store list. The price of a coin or diamond can be worked out from a pack with a printed count. The third, how many units a chapter or premium choice takes, is inside the app. Dreame, GoodNovel and Webnovel do not publish coins per chapter, and Chapters, Choices, Romance Club, Whispers, Winked, MeChat and Tabou Stories do not publish the price of a choice. We do not install apps and will not estimate it.
The sum, then, is the plan price in units, divided by the units a chapter costs. Our guide to how story app credits work and the entry on credit-based reading cover the mechanics. Here is what common plan prices are worth in the units that can be priced.
| Plan price | Examples at that price | Dreame or GoodNovel coins | Webnovel coins | Chapters diamonds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $7.99 | Tabou Stories monthly, Quinn monthly | About 800 | About 400 | 80 to 110 |
| $9.99 | MeChat monthly, Webnovel "Membership_Monthly" | About 1,000 | About 500 | 100 to 137 |
| $11.99 | Kindle+ and Everand (from) | About 1,200 | About 600 | 120 to 165 |
| $14.99 | Choices VIP, Scripts Romance Pass | About 1,500 | About 750 | 151 to 206 |
The rates behind it are those on the pricing pages: about 100 coins a dollar at Dreame and GoodNovel, about 50 at Webnovel, and 7.27 to 9.95 cents a Chapters diamond depending on the pack. The table says what a price buys in each currency. It does not say a plan includes that much, and coin counts do not compare between apps: a Chapters diamond is not a Dreame coin. To use it, take the figure for the currency you use and divide by the units your next chapter asks. Against a Dreame book, for example, a $9.99 plan breaks even at 1,000 divided by the coins you see on the next chapter.
Not every plan is a flat fee
This is where the simple rule fails. Inside a coin app, a "subscription" can be one of three different things.
| Kind | Examples and what they publish | What it does to the sum |
|---|---|---|
| Flat access | Tabou Stories: unlimited tickets, which let you play as many chapters as you like, at $2.99 a week or $7.99 a month. Roma lists "Unlimited Reading - Monthly" at $17.99 | Removes the per-chapter charge. The break-even comparison works |
| Allowance and discount | Scripts Romance Pass, $14.99 a month: an 80-diamond bonus per renewal, a 10-diamond daily bonus, a Premium Choice Discount and a weekly Key Pass. Love Sick Premium Features, $19.99 a month: a daily bonus of 15 diamonds, 20% offpremium options, more free keys. Choices VIP, $14.99: unlimited keys, 30 daily diamond rewards, 2 extra diamonds on new chapters | Lowers the bill but does not remove it. Premium choices still cost diamonds, and the help article for Choices does not say VIP makes them free |
| No contents stated | Chapters VIP ($9.99) and DayPass ($0.99), Whispers VIP and club ($9.99 each), Romance Club's Gold pass ($9.99), GoodNovel's weekly items ($9.99 and $19.99), Webnovel's memberships ($4.99 to $19.99) | Cannot be compared with coins at all |
The discount kind is the one to do arithmetic on. Take Love Sick: by our arithmetic a 20 percent discount only pays back its own $19.99 if you spend $99.95 a month on premium options. That ignores the daily diamond bonus, which is a separate benefit with its own value, but it shows that a discount is a poor reason to subscribe unless your spending is already high. Apple's subscription rule says a subscription must last at least seven days and, before asking a customer to subscribe, the developer should clearly describe what the user will get for the price
. Several store lists say nothing at all about what their passes contain; the in-app purchase screen may say more, and we do not install apps.
Library subscriptions are a different animal
At the other end are subscriptions that sell a library, with no coins at all. Kindle+ is $11.99 a month plus taxes and lets you borrow up to 20 titles at a time, with the titles leaving at the next billing date after you cancel. Everand is from $11.99. Dipsea is $12.99 a month or $69.99 a year, and Quinn $7.99 a month or $59.99 a year. Spicify's reading plan is $4.99 a month and says No Coins / No Ads
. These can be priced without any in-app number, which is their strength. For a flat library the arithmetic is the cost per title: Kindle+ is $3.00 a book at four a month and $1.50 at eight. Our Everand against Kindle+ page compares the two largest.
Weekly, monthly or annual: the plan period matters
Weekly plans are cheap on the day you see them and costly over a month. Our arithmetic from the US App Store prices:
| Service | Weekly | Monthly | Four weeks | 52 weeks | Longest plan |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MeChat | $4.99 | $9.99 | $19.96 | $259.48 | 12 months: $119.88 |
| Tabou Stories | $2.99 | $7.99 | $11.96 | $155.48 | 12 months: $95.88 |
| Epictos | $2.99 | $5.99 | $11.96 | $155.48 | Yearly: $39.99 |
| GoodNovel | $9.99 and $19.99 | None listed | $39.96 and $79.96 | $519.48 and $1,039.48 | None listed |
At the first three, two weekly payments are still under the monthly price (MeChat $9.98 against $9.99, Tabou Stories $5.98 against $7.99, Epictos $5.98 against $5.99) and a third is over it. So a weekly plan is for a binge of a week or two. Annual plans work the other way: Dipsea's annual plan pays for itself after about 5.4 months of the monthly one, and Quinn's after about 7.5. Dipsea's seven-day trial is on the annual plan only and bills $69.99 when it ends. For the weekly sums in full, see MeChat's weekly plan.
What you keep, and what you can get back
The terms we read offer no refund path for coins or for subscriptions. Dreame's terms call payments final and non-refundable
except where it specifies; GoodNovel's say All fees are in U.S. dollars and are non-refundable
; Webnovel's say non-refundable unless the law requires otherwise; Amazon says that if you cancel Kindle+ you will not receive a refund of any subscription fees paid
; and Wattpad's Payment Policy makes purchases with Coins non-refundable. The difference is in what is left afterwards.
- Coins: Apple's guideline 3.1.1 says credits bought by in-app purchase
may not expire
. Wattpad's Payment Policy says purchased Coins never expire but Bonus Coins do, 30 days after receipt. Most services state no expiry rule. Our records hold no statement on whether chapters you have unlocked stay unlocked. - Subscriptions: access stops at the end of the paid period. At Kindle+ the borrowed titles go at the next billing date.
- Cancelling: store subscriptions are cancelled in the store's settings, not in the app, as the Dreame and Webnovel terms and GoodNovel's App Store text say. Our cancellation guide has the steps.
Hybrids: coins and a plan in one app
Many apps sell both, and the sums interact. Wattpad's Premium is from $4.99 a month on the web page and adds bonus Coins on every Coin purchase; Premium+ adds 200 bonus Coins a month for $2.50 more on the web ($4.00 more on the App Store). At the largest pack rate, 200 Coins would cost about $7.37 to buy, but Bonus Coins expire after 30 days, so the two are not like for like. Roma lists "Weekly Coins" at $7.99, "Monthly Coins" at $19.99 and "Annual Coins" at $39.99 with no coin counts stated, which cannot be priced at all. When an app has both, work out the plan on its own terms first and the coins second.
A rule of thumb
Tip
Find the price of one chapter in the app, turn it into dollars with the rates above, and divide the plan price by it. If you will unlock more chapters than that in a month, take the plan, but only if it states that it removes the per-chapter charge.
- Learn the chapter price first. Buy the smallest pack, open one book and read the next chapter's cost. A $0.99 pack or a $2.99 day pass is a cheap way to learn it.
- Ask what the plan includes. Flat access, a discount and an unlabelled pass are three different products.
- Take the shortest plan that fits. A weekly plan for a binge, monthly for a regular habit, annual only if you will stay past the break-even month.
- Set the cancel date on the day you start, because the plan renews and there is no refund.
Which model suits which reader?
| Best for | Pick | Why, from the records |
|---|---|---|
| A chapter or two now and then | Coins or a free tier | The bill follows what you open; a $0.99 pack at Webnovel is the smallest published buy-in |
| Reading most days | A plan with published contents | A flat fee caps the bill: Tabou Stories' unlimited tickets, Kindle+, Dipsea |
| A one-week binge | A weekly plan or a day pass | Two weeks cost less than a month at MeChat, Tabou Stories and Epictos |
| Many books, one at a time | A library plan | Cost per book falls as you borrow more: $3.00 at four a month on Kindle+ |
| Premium choices in an interactive app | Check the plan's perks first | Scripts and Love Sick discount choices; Choices VIP does not say it removes the diamond cost |
| Keeping what you paid for | Neither is certain | Coins may not expire on iPhone; a lapsed plan ends access |

FAQ
When is a subscription worth it for story apps?
When you unlock more chapters in a month than the plan price divided by one chapter's price, and when the plan says it covers what you read. The chapter price is shown inside most coin apps and is not published on the pages we read.
Is a subscription cheaper than coins?
For someone reading daily, usually, because a flat fee caps the bill and coins do not. For a few chapters, coins or a free tier cost less. Several plans publish no contents, so the comparison cannot be made for them.
Are weekly subscriptions a good deal?
Only for a week or two. At MeChat, Tabou Stories and Epictos, a third weekly payment costs more than the monthly plan, and a year of weekly payments is several times the cost of a year of monthly ones.
Do story app coins expire?
Apple's guidelines say credits bought through an in-app purchase may not expire. Wattpad says purchased Coins never expire and Bonus Coins do, 30 days after receipt. Most services state no rule.
Does a story app subscription include premium choices?
Not necessarily. Tabou Stories' plan gives unlimited tickets, but Scripts and Love Sick describe diamond bonuses and discounts, and Choices' VIP perks list unlimited keys and diamond rewards without saying premium choices become free.
Can I get a refund on coins or a subscription?
The terms of Dreame, GoodNovel, Webnovel and Wattpad make purchases non-refundable, and Amazon says Kindle+ fees are not refunded after you cancel. Refunds through Apple or Google are separate and are not covered by these services' terms.
